Summary: Horror classic gets a make-over
Review: The first point to make about this film (as if you didnt know) is that it is a modern-day remake of a classic of its genre. It exists not only to pay tribute to a fantastic original, but to breath new life into it. In that respect it succeeds. It recreates several shots (which, it has to be said, look fantastic) and introduces a very cinematic style of filming. To a casual film-goer this might not seem that important but presentation is often a big factor in how scary a movie is - after all, its no good having a limb-decorated basement if the way its shot completely lacks atmosphere, is there?

Now to the meaty stuff. Somewhat wisely, the writers decided to not just try and re-create moments from the original which could not be done as well as they were back then. For example, the mongaloid Hitch-hiker in the original is replaced here by a much more plot-helping hysterical female. The famous scene where the female lead is desperately trying to barracade herself in a blackened room, and we see everything how she does (completely blacked out screen, audio only) is dropped. These might seem infuriating to fans of the original, but the important thing here is that this allows the film to scare when you're not expecting to be scared, as oppose to making a scary moment still just that when everyone knows whats coming. It removes some bits here, adds some bits there, and builds it up into what is a fine horror flick.

The only flaw i personaly have is that certain decisions take away the shock value of certain moments. For example, its hard to take in the shock of the disturbing basement when the female lead character is quite blatantly bra-less and drenched wet in the chest area.

Overall, fans of the original should be pleased. This neither disrespects nor tears apart, it simply entertains and scares. Horror fans sick of seeing the token sex scenes and jokes will be pleased.

Summary: ORIGINAL AND AMAZING
Review: I don't know WHY people start reviewing the movie they saw in the theatre HERE when the DVD release is the item for review NOT the theatrical film? I also get sick of hearing how the movie shouldn't be taken seriously because Jessica Biel of 7th Heaven is in it, the "whats next Sarah michelle gellar" in texas chainsaw 2? ....they are ACTORS and ACTRESSES!!!!! It's a JOB they do, forget typcasting!!! Jessica does GREAT here! As a fan of the other four films I find this a STUNNING addition to the series, now this isn't a remake of the original film but of the original script as the original film makers had to stick to an R rating then and something TOO gory would have generated an X rating then, therefore this film was born. I think the comparisons of the original and this one are different and both relevant here. This film is a GREAT film in many ways, it scares you the way it needs to, disturbs and makes you THINK and is a FUN ride! The dvd presented in this 2 disc set is done very well! the removable faceplate is cool if you want to hang it up etc...the evidence photos are creepy and cool also, but the extras are WELL worth the $30 bucks alone! The Ed Gein documentary is on the second disc and showcases what this film is LOOSELY based on, I find it HILARIOUS to find the new generations thinking this is REAL , too many thought the footage in parts was REAL! LOL what a GREAT gimmick for the new crowd as it adds a NEW feel to the film for them thinking it REALLY happened! My only gripe is that New Line is normally higher priced for some of their dvds and this technically could have been all packaged on ONE disc, however in order to show the buyer the creepy Chainsaw it makes it collectible. The case folds out with the chainsaw on it to show you the size of the chainsaw used in the film, truly cool stuff.....Pick this up today if a fan of the series or Jessica Biel..its TRULY amazing!

Summary: Thank you Michael Bay
Review: What we have here, is what I was hoping for with many remakes, but was left so dissapointed. This remake went back, and updated the script of one of the best horror movies ever, took out some of the scriptwriting which made the original hard to keep with, and added a tremendous storyline which doesn't "dumb up" the story for those who can't figure it out. What it does, is adds some background and some exceptional scriptwriting to include with the beautiful cinematography to this piece. I felt like not only was I seeing what the original was in its time, but I was experienceing one of the best remakes ever.
Leatherface, is my only minor quible. I felt like the actor that protrayed him was WAY too into being "the guy who got to be leatherface" rather than being the character. When watching the documentary on the film that is included in the package, I found myself getting really annoyed with the actor. I mean, do you see Kane Hodder going around acting all cool because he is Jason Vorhees? No, you don't. So this guy was my only problem with it. Anyway, this package is well worth the steep price, and watch it for the simple reason that it is a fun remake, that will leave you feeling disturbed in the end.
I also loved the opening and closing that were taken out of the movie. This setup a sequel, and i don't understand why it was taken out...

Summary: If it's not broke...
Review: ...you don't fix it.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was arguably one of the greatest horror films of all time. This "remake",(which, by the way, was NOT the director's intention, but who would line up to see "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 5"?) is a perfect example of Hollywood never knowing when to leave well enough alone.

I don't even know where to begin, so I will simply say that it pains me for anyone to mention this film in the same breath as the original. When a director who's recent work includes such glamour films as "Pearl Harbor" and "Bad Boys II" tries to tackle the task of re-telling a gritty, shocking film as the original, what else can you expect but pure Hollywood cliches?

This film is like tracing over the Mona Lisa with fluorescent paint and expecting it to be something else other than gaudy.

Save your money and rent the original.

Summary: EVERYONE READ THIS!!!!!!
Review: I'm tired of seeing entries in cdnow and reading that people are pissed about the remake. Yes it is a remake of a classic, but its nothing like it. People complain that the new version doesnt have the crazy guy cutting himself in the van. Oh well this version isnt suppose to be like the classic. All I can say is get the SE and watch the "Making the Massacre-Redux". They mention they put in a new story line. Watch it before you speak. Then you will learn why its diiferent. If you havent watched it and seen the reasons why its different then shut up about how bad it is. It was a great movie!!!!

Summary: "You're all going to die..."
Review: Just when you thought the original was disturbing, gross, disgusting, and frightening, now comes the updated version, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," which knows no limits when it comes to gore and intensely terrifying moments. Is it a remake? Not necessarily. However, it is more like a movie that pays tribute to a great classic by offering its own vision of a well-known nightmare of limbs and guts.

While characters and some of the story has changed, the deranged and murderous plot remains the same. An unspeakable turn of events (I will not give away how it all starts, as it is very different from the original) lands a group of teens in a nightmarish maze that throws a mutilated man who wields a giant chainsaw in their path. Not to mention the "crazy" family that turns out to be just as vicious and murderous. For these teens, a safe place is nowhere in their short and painful future.

As I said in the beginning, this is not a remake. Nor is this a sequel. So what is it? Well, I like to think of it as an "updated" version of the original--in fact, I consider it more of a tribute to the classic that redefined the horror genera as we know it. This movie, while much more darker, sinister, and sicker, is not trying to live up to the original, nor is it trying to outdo it. I had to smile, as this was not a step-by-step remake, such as the newer "Psycho" was. There are new elements, characters, and plot twists thrown into the mix. And to be honest... it works.

I must confess, I had an unquestionably hard time trying to watch this movie. There were a bunch of moments that made me want to shut it off, and yet--I continued to watch the debauchery. There is a sick and twisted fascination that this movie exploits from us, knowing that we're going continue to watch no matter what. The original was choppy and had a very low-budget, so while it was undeniably violent and brutal it wasn't as hard to take. This new version is in no way a Grade-B movie. It's extremely realistic in its absolute brutality. This shouldn't even be considered as a choice for people who have a hard time watching violence, gore and torture. This movie takes it to the limit and is unapologetic.

Even though this was a hard movie to watch, I have to confess that I liked it. It is great to finally see a horror movie that isn't overly goofy. This is a straight-up and serious slasher movie that does what it's supposed to do--TERRIFY US. An element sadly forgotten by most of the horror flops that come out now. Maybe they can take a page from this movie and perhaps learn something. The acting is surprisingly good, the script is quite believable and is rarely cheesy or lame, and the film looks fantastic. Not a bad job for director Marcus Nispel.

This 2-Disc special edition (a single disc version is also available for those who aren't giant fans of the movie) has some tasty extras. As I said, the film looks and sounds great. You even have the choice of watching it in DTS if your little heart desires to do so. Special features include documentaries, deleted scenes, commentary, trailers, TV spots and a whole lot more. The star of the special features is an exclusive documentary on the notorious killer, Ed Gein, who inspired the original film. It's a really interesting feature and is the main reason to purchase this edition of the movie. The behind-the-scenes documentary (over an hour long) is also worth the money, as well.

"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is an unforgiving bloodbath that sends you to the butcher's with bloody front-row seats. It's not better than the original, and it is not trying to be. This film is more of a tribute to an undeniable classic. It's an entertaining new vision and interpretation of the original. If you're looking for a straight-up horror movie that isn't trying to be cutesy or is striving for pop status, then this is the one for you. Just remember one thing... once you open the door, there's no going back. A disturbing, and yet involving horror film that will stay in your head for days. -Michael Crane

Summary: Texas Chainsaw Massacre!!!
Review: I went out and bought this dvd today without ever seeing it. And yes 9 times outta 10 thats usually a bad mistake but I thought this was a pretty good movie. It keeps ya intrested and on the edge of your seat. Suspensful at times, at other times you could see it comming. But all and all it wasnt a bad movie at all. Not a kind of movie for people with weak stomach's and such. Not scary either just has some jumpy parts.

The original sucked but I liked this one so if you have seen the original and didnt like it dont judge this one because its better.

Go out and get it and see what you think I know some people have different taste's in movies but I myself liked this one but yes it is pretty gruesome and nasty on some parts.

I got this 2 disc version that actually have the crime scene photo's of like the chainsaw he used, pictures of the severed fingers he had cut off and put in a box and so on. pretty disturbing photographs. But like I said go out and rent or buy it and make your own decisions

Another plus in this movie is without a doubt Jessica Biel. I mean c'mon guys who doesnt wanna see Jessica Biel in a little tiny white shirt?...I can pretty much watch anything she does...mmmm shes a total hottie!!!

Summary: Good Remake,This coming from a fan of the original
Review: Jessica Biel (of 7th Heaven fame) thinks you'll "really care" about her character in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. She thinks her movie exudes depth ("There's a lot more to it than running around killing people. There really is"). She thinks you'll want to watch it more than once ("You're going to be grossed out, terrified, really disturbed, and I think you're going to want to see it again").

I don't think I've ever disagreed with anyone more than I do with Miss Jessica Biel.

Massacre lives up to its name in almost every way: its brutal story, its artistic deficiency, and its chilling psychological effect. In it, five young adults slip into a nightmarish reality when they pick up a hitchhiker on a lonely stretch of Texas road. The hitchhiker blows her brains out in their back seat, setting off a series of events that leaves all but one traveler dead. But they don't just die, they get butchered.

The killer is known only as "Leatherface," a moniker that references the masks (made of human skin) he wears to cover his deformities. His weapon of choice is, of course, a chain saw, which he brandishes with nimble glee. The results are gruesomely predictable. The sheer graphic intensity with which they are depicted is largely unexpected-even considering today's be-as-gross-as-you-can moviemaking atmosphere.

This story-loosely inspired by real-life events-first appeared on theater screens in 1974. Referring to this manifestation which is not exactly a remake or a sequel, Biel gloats, "People will love it, hate it, and totally compare and contrast the two. But ours is more brutal." Now there's something I can agree with.

The Motion Picture Association of America is officially asleep at the wheel. One week ago, I endured Kill Bill: Vol. 1, a stylized, artsy blood bath basking in decidedly unwarranted critical acclaim. Today it was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a bleak, industrial strength blood bath inexplicably enjoying phenomenal box office buzz (it came in at number 1, pulling in nearly $30 million opening weekend). These two films easily deserved NC-17 ratings, so as to keep them out of mainstream theaters and out of the hands (minds) of teens and children. But the MPAA callously slapped both with an R. Did anyone on the ratings board actually see them?

Attentive entertainment analysts learn quickly not to waste superlative language on middle-of-the-road content. This isn't that. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre deserves every negative adjective I can conjure. It is a sadistic pornography of violence gruesome beyond proper description. It celebrates death. It glorifies brutality. It revels in insanity. It wraps itself in sin. It's squalid, wretched, debased, debauched, depraved, abhorrent, contemptible, loathsome, repulsive, revolting and repugnant.

It's hard for me to imagine witnessing anything worse than what's booted around the screen during Massacre's seemingly interminable 100 minutes. Where can movies possibly go from here in their insatiable quest for unqualified degradation? I'm sure I'll find out when the sequel arrives.
