Summary: Brainless fun with lots of cheap thrills!
Review: A number of months ago I rented the rated version of this film, AVOID AT ALL COST! This unrated version is much better. Don't expect any quality acting or complex story telling this film survives on bad taste, humor and gore. This is the story of a film editor who is asigned to edit all of the offencive scenes from various splatter films. In the process he goes bonkers from viewing such mayhem. Is this a stab at self criticism on the part of the director? Don't bet on it, its just an excuse to show more gore! A man blows his own head off with a grenade before the main credits roll! At one point Ed and the producer of a film he is editing is arguing over whether to keep a scene where a woman is raped by a beaver and then has her head blown off with a bazooka (Don't get exicited, Its not shown only described). The producer insits "The beaver rape scene stays! It's tastefully done!"....A great party film where the humor takes away any sting the film may have had...You will know the unrated version when you see the box cover. It has a mans head being sliced in half with a hatchet.

Review: Actually I feel like having my review be that one word. My friend, whose opinions I almost always trust about movies, especially horror movies, warned me NOT to rent this no matter how tempted or bored or desperate to see a new horror movie I was, because it was a complete waste of time. Unfortunately I haven't talked to him in a while, and I was in a hurry to pick a movie, and thought, 'what the heck, how bad could it be?' WHY don't I learn? What was I thinking? Did I think it would magically turn into a better movie while sitting there on the shelf for years waiting to be rented? The 'plot' concerns a guy who edits films for some company. His boss is a jerk. The guy who had the job before him went insane and blew himself up in the pre-credits sequence, so for some reason the boss picks nerdy 'Ed' for the special project of editing "Loose Limbs" splatter movies. He never says what Ed is supposed to edit, but I guess that doesn't matter. Ed is upset by some of the clips, working on them up at this house all by himself that the boss has decided to relocate him to for no apparent reason. He asks his boss if he can stop or do another project, but his boss doesn't care. He starts to slowly go insane, supposedly from watching the clips, and wants to carry out the gory murders in real life. Or has he been this way all along? Please note that I am making this plot sound much more deep, interesting, and coherent than it actually is. We don't care about the characters at all, or have any sympathy for them, or even hate the bad guys. The plot is really, really boring and predictable. The splatter isn't even that gruesome or creative-this is NOT worth renting just to see the gore, because what there is isn't interesting or original. All the 'tributes' to Sam Raimi just come off like really bad ripoffs, and no-one in the movie is anywhere near good looking enough as Bruce Campbell, so you can't distract yourself with that. I think an "Evil Dead II-Dead by Dawn" poster is only prominently displayed in one scene in the hopes that Sam Raimi will be flattered and not consider any sort of legal action. A trained chimp could have written a better screenplay. Every time I hear lines like "Are we having fun...yet?" (which even Bride of Re-Animator couldn't pull off without making me wince) I start feeling like picking up some sort of deadly weapon myself. Characters just appear out of nowhere with no explanation, wandering in only to get killed. This might be OK if the movie was even remotely amusing or entertaining, but it was all I could do to keep from fast-forwarding through most of it. Fortunately I chose to pay some bills and balance my checkbook at the same time the movie was playing. Trust me, it did not require my full attention-I still felt like 90+ minutes of my life were wasted just by having this on in the background. Don't watch it, no matter HOW tempted you are-you'll hate yourself for wasting your money. Horror fans will be completely disgusted by how incompetent it is. Even those who haven't seen too many splatter movies should stay away, as there are so many movies out there you could rent that are much more well worth your while. If you want something brainless, low-budget and fun, rent something else. Complete waste of time with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Be smarter than I was at the time and don't be fooled by the "Warning-Not For the Faint of Heart" on the box. You have been warned!

No, it is not a gore-gore kind of film, but it is not meant to be. The movie features some of the elite of swedish actors on orders to make the movie exactly as it is. The dubbing is made on purpose, don't think anything else! It is a classic here in Sweden and has earned its place in the swedish hall-of-fame of swedish horror-films (scarce as they may be) See this movie for some laughs, not to be scared. Enjoy! :o)

Summary: Evil Ed DVD review
Review: I love this movie but this DVD isn't really that great for the medium. It advertised "Widescreen" at the top of the box, but when you play it you can barely see any black bands at the top or bottom of the picture, it's more like FULLSCREEN. There aren't any extra features on the DVD besides chapter stops, so for the price it's not a great value. The audio and video quality are very good however. Also, it advertised this DVD movie version as the Unrated version, but it appears to be just the standard R version like the VHS edition.

Summary: The IRONY!!!!!!!
Review: I watched this movie in Sweden (where the movie was made) and it was in its beautiful uncut glory. However, this Americanized version, bastardizes everything that makes this movie so cool........ The end scene is one of the best gore scenes ever produced and even in this, the uncut DVD, it is cut. The irony here is this issue is addressed in the movie (cutting), where "EVIL ED" himself is cutting a part in a movie so bad, that its actually a comedic moment. Its sad that movie distributors like Apix destroy excellent movies like this.

Review: OK, I just started watching this "Unrated" disc, and 10 minutes into the film I noticed a missing scene. I pulled my tape dub out and saw the additional footage. The disc is mis-labelled as "Unrated" but is most definately the "R" version. I'm hopefully returning the DVD for the correctly labelled "Unrated" tape.

Review: That's the line on the front of the "Evil Ed" box here in Belgium. The cover displays a drawn man, whose head is cut in 2 by an axe. Although the movie has it's gory moments, people who dislike gore: no scene in the movie is as gory as it's cover (which is a shame-i'll explain). Although i read in most of the interviews that the film is a kind of tribute to "Evil Dead", director Sam Raimi and actor Bruce Campbell, i think also of the movie "Braindead" (or "Dead Alive", as it is called in America). "Braindead" is the unbeatable combination of extreme gore, injected with brilliant humor. I don't know if the version of "Braindead" is cut in America, but if you ever see the uncut version, you have seen horror at its goriest... and funniest. The problem with "Evil Ed" is that the movie never dares to cross the line which "Braindead" leapt over. The opening sequence is just pure genius (the first, quite demented, editor blows off his own head with a handgrenade while his cool, emotionless boss watches and tells he's fired!), but then the creators pull back and seem to be happy to offer little gore, combined with a more satirical kind of humor. And that just doesn't work quite as it should be. The director tried to put the humor in the English dubbing and the idiotic acting. It appears also that the worst gore is in the movies which Ed cuts out. This all points (for me) that even their 'uncut' version of the movie is still a film which seems 'cut'. And that's a shame, because the final sequence of the film shows the genius of the first sequence. To say it short: opening and ending great, the middle a little boring. To be quite honest: since "Braindead", many so-called gory movies seem like child's play to me. But even people who have seen less of this kind, will notice that this movie just could have been better. If you look at the whole film, though, and you are not too demanding, it's quite amusing to watch how Ed becomes more stressed and demented by all the gore he has to cut out. If nothing else is in your video store, you can rend this. But if you want to see a "top class" example, get "Braindead"
