A Nightmare on Elm Street 5 - The Dream Child

Review: I consider A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child a fairly impressive and certainly an important entry in the series, although I admit that it does have a few problems. Somewhat ironically, the success of the Elm Street franchise and Freddy in particular becomes a negative rather than a positive this time around. This was the second film in a row to be made without Wes Craven's guidance, and I think the filmmakers misinterpreted to some degree the secret of Freddy's success; they overplayed their hand by putting too much emphasis on new special effects tricks and Freddy witticisms instead of just letting Freddy be Freddy. In effect, our beloved anti-hero becomes a caricature of himself, and I as a viewer detect a barrier of some sort between myself and Freddy that stands in the way of my complete enjoyment of what I am watching. Had this fifth Elm Street film been forced to make do with a lower budget, it could have been something really impressive. The basic premise of the film is very sound and effective, and a couple of the killing motifs also bear traces of semi-brilliance, but the over-emphasis on special effects works against the filmmakers here.

Alice Johnson (Lisa Wilcox), the Dream Master of the fourth film, has picked up the pieces of her life and moved beyond her experiences with Freddy. She and Dan (Danny Hassel) are now a couple, and she and her new friends are all graduating from high school. Life is just great until she starts having disturbing dreams once again. In these dreams she and the audience actually witness a recreation of the stories (chronicled in the third film) of Freddy's conception and birth. We see Amanda trapped inside the tower with a hundred dangerous lunatics, then witness the birth of Amanda's child - it's an unusual delivery, to say the least. Things don't stop there, of course. Little Freddy is soon replaced by big Freddy, and thus begins another assault on Alice and her friends. There is a big difference this time around, though, as Alice soon discovers. She begins to have Freddy encounters while she is still awake. This confuses her a great deal, and the explanation for how Freddy manages to thrive and kill off her friends even when she herself is not asleep is, to my mind, quite brilliant. The introduction of a new spooky little dream child named Jacob complicates matters to some degree, as does the more active role played by Amanda in the unfolding drama, but these new plot twists actually work quite well in the context of the overall Freddy storyline. Things get a little frayed at the end, but the basic premise holds up from start to finish.

The kills are actually the worst parts of this film, oddly enough. What should be Freddy's most evil shining moments end up looking rather comical, relying purely on fancy special effects and campiness to impress the audience. The Freddy we came to love in the first few films was not about drama and elaborate settings; he was just about killing people. In this film, Freddy has to make a great big production out of everything he does, and this just doesn't ring true in the hearts of those of us who know Freddy best. A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child ends up being by far the least scary film of the entire series. It's a shame because the basic story was promising enough to take the series to great new heights. Having said all that, though, the film still manages to earn a strong four stars from me. I really liked what it tried to do; the special effects guys just needed to have been handled with a shorter leash.

Review: This version of Nightmare on Elm Street is so terrible.Where's the special features at either on this new Vhs or Dvd there's no deleted scenes like the uncut vhs version.Dan's motorcycle scene was more graphic his face was ripped off and a needle stabs his abck,and Greta's death was longer Freddy cuts her stomach and feeds her own livers.There should be a new Vhs or Dvd version of the uncut version.

Review: This movie should never have been made and part 6 should of been part 5.The movie had some great effects and moments,but the story made no sense and the acting was poor.I have said my peace.

Review: This is the 5th movie and it is one of the weaker ones in the series, but I liked it.
The heroine Alice returns living a happy normal life free of nightmares about Freddy. She has great friends and a baby coming! She doesn't know it but Freddy is back and wants her baby!!! I am a big fan of the series and I enjoyed this one!
Great Effects and new ways to die!!!

In the fifth installment, the nightmarish dream-stalker Freddy enters the dreams of survivor Wilcox's unborn child, attempting to place the souls of those he killed into the fetus, and enjoys his favorite pastime by going after her friends. Again, bizarre effects are the only pro here, but the movie's a bust. They saved the worst for last, but it's followed by FREDDY'S DEAD: THE FINAL NIGHTMARE.

Running Time: 89 minutes and rated R for language and gore/violence.

Summary: Lousy entry in an average series.
Review: I'll be the first to admit that the first Nightmare film by Wes Craven was pure genius and very entertaining, featuring powerhouse performances by Heather Langenkamp and Robert Englund. Freddy Krueger WAS the boogey man in that first terrifying film. The sequels pretty much sucked and this one is no exception. Craven wisely chose not to get involved in this mess and Lagenkamp is sorely missed. Krueger has been reduced to a pop culture icon and seems about as evil now as the Easter bunny or the Teletubbies.
The far fetched plot involves Freddy trying to be reborn through the unborn child of a pregnant teen. Everything about this film seems wrong-the killings are unrealistic to the point of being laughable, Freddy's one liners are not clever at all, the acting is horrid on all levels and even Englund seems bored and tired with his material. A big problem here too is that the teens are not likeable or even remotely sympathetic, a big lack of chemistry between the cast.
Even a relatively imaginative Escher inspired climax cannot save this film. Keep your fond memories of the original and avoid this at all costs.

Review: I just have one word for this movie but I can't say it on the computer. This movie is the worst in the series because who ever wrote Freddy's lines has got Horror mixed up with really bad Comedy. A few cool effects is why i gave it one star because if it didn't it who be called "The Never Scares you if you were 2 years old movie."

Review: Nightmare on Elm Street 5 in my opinion is by far the worst in the series. In this installment Alice (from Nightmare 4) is back and is now pregnant. But now Freddy is now trying to come resseurect himself through her child.

Now that you know the basic plot let's get to why this movie is so horrible. First and foremost the acting is terrible, now normally this wouldn't bother me too much but even Robert Englund fails to entertain. Freddy isn't even clever anymore. That and the killings are worse than usual too. Most of them just became too over the top and stupid. Stay away from the installment at any cost.
