Summary: A HUGE Mistake
Review: In my opinion making this movie was a HUGE mistake. It's not only an insult to the horror genre but most importantly an insult to the entire Leatherface series.Would the director of this movie PLEASE retire ASAP.I think Ed Wood could've done a much better job on this one.I would like to know who's idea it was to change the characters so much, that person should be shot.I guess if your not a fan of good movies though you should enjoy this one.

Summary: HORRIBLE!!!!!! good thing they dont mention this now....
Review: is this the same matthew mcconehay and rene zellwegger that make decent movies>? good thing they are not proud of this because this is as bad as the 2nd TCM. 0

this "remake" or 4th installment is terrible... leatherface was not even in this movie but a few scenes...matthew is just overall a horrible villian... they should have put him in the leatherface costume instead because he was the craziest one...

and rene what your like 40 trying to be 17>? her acting is as bad in this movie than in the bridgette jones diaries 2...she just needs to stay with jack white of the white stripes and do not make anymore horror flicks....

the 2003 remake of this movie is BRILLIANT!!! this one does not even get close.

i rather people watch leperchan in the hood before this tragedy...

if any movie producers read this DO NOT MAKE ANOTHER CRAPPER LIKE THIS....

Summary: too cleverly sly for it's own good
Review: Kim Henkel: What were you thinking? Did you think people would "get" what you were doing and enjoy this black comedy for what it was? Right off the bat you hit us with your clever comedic nods the other sequels (very funny by the way) and the movie is filled with great little comedic gems. Then you ask your viewers to spot the "easter eggs" you included in this one and have fun with them. The final scene is especially filled with that sort of thing. But you know how fans can be. The original Chainsaw has plenty of die hard fans since it's now become 'art' and 'fans' is short for fanatics and I don't know too many fanatics with a good sense of humor. You tried though - and you even hit the mark most of the time. This is very fun and very funny. Thanks!

Summary: Do Not Buy This DVD!
Review: Not for the reason below, but because it is simply the worst Chainsaw movie ever. I thought nothing could be as bad as Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, but this takes the cake.

Summary: Bad, but still worth watching
Review: Originally filmed in 1994, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation was written and directed by Kim Henkel, who co-wrote the original film with Tobe Hooper. Originally set as a re-make of the original, the film was re-edited and re-distributed as a sequel, although there are still many a similarity between this film and the original. The plot is nothing new; four kids get lost in the backwoods and eventually get caught and hacked up by a maniacal family, but there is an overly campy humor that is present that makes this otherwise dreadful film worth watching. This film also features pre-fame Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey; both of which give great early performances, especially McConaughey who is laugh out loud hilarious and gives a brilliantly maniacal performance that almost serves as a precursor to his memorable characterizations in Frailty and Reign of Fire. Although I wasn't too fond of the ideas with Leatherface, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation is so bad it's almost good, and if your a fan of the series but missed this installment then it is still worth checking out.

Summary: Not nearly as bad as I was led to believe.
Review: Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (Kim Henkel, 1994)

Everything about Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation points to it not only being a huge underground success, but achieving some mainstream notoriety as well, just as its grandpappy did twenty years previous. The original writer comes back to helm the flick in his directorial debut, and the casting folks manage to land a few stars who look like they're on their way up. And my, did they strike a goldmine: two of the movie's stars are Renee Zellweger (Chicago, Bridget Jones' Diary) and Matthew McConaughey (Reign of Fire, Amistad). I mean, this has every necessary Hallmark of underground reverence.

It has gotten exactly the opposite. Listed near the bottom of IMDB's bottom 100 and universally reviled by the reviews posted there. Why everyone's hatin' on Leatherface is beyond me. My best guess is that a whole bunch of people who had never heard of any of the films, but were Renee Zellweger fans, rented it as a kind of completist thing. Because really, it's not that bad. I've seen at least five films that make this look like Doctor Zhivago in the past year alone (and one of them was nominated for a few Oscars).

If you've seen, or heard about, any of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre flicks, you know what to expect. The main differences is the bevy of teenagers are out on prom night; the brainless jock-type Barry (Tyler Cone [The War at Home]) and his equally annoying girlfriend Heather (Lisa Marie Newmyer [The House on Todville Road]), and the geek, Sean (John Harrison [The Substitute Wife]), with the plucky heroine (Zellweger). Following an accident with another teen (listed in the credits, amusingly, as "I'm Not Hurt"), various members of the bunch, trying to find help, meet up with various townsfolk at various times, and realize there's something very odd going on...

There was great potential here (unlike the other films, Leatherface's house this time is located close to a decent-sized commercial area) to have some real fun with the concept, but instead Henkel and company went with the same straight horror-comedy mix that the whole series works with. (Only the recent remake of the original takes itself at all seriously, which is not necessarily a bad thing.) The comedy is as mean-spirited and ugly as it is in the first film, which some people are going to hate and some will take as a welcome return to form (one figures Henkel was probably responsible for most of the original film's gallows humor). As usual, there's a lot going on that makes no real sense within the story (McConaughey's Rube Goldberg-esque prosthetic leg, the insane CIA agent played by a chilling John Gale, etc.), but again, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some of the acting really sucks, but you expect that from a B-grade horror flick. But it succeeds at what it attempts, in a gruesome, low-budget sort of way, and doesn't deserve anywhere near the amount of revilement it has received.

Don't expect greatness, but you'll chuckle a few times. **

Summary: What a mess and a waste of future talent
Review: The only reason to watch this dreadful semi-remake of a classic horror film is Renee Zellweger, in a pre-stardom performance. Matthew McConaughey's outrageous overacting has to be seen to be believed. He too has gone on to become a capable actor. The film has some truly bizarre moments and much perhaps, unintentional humor. Many things are not adequately explained nor fully realized or capitalized on. There are a few truly novel ideas which are not expanded upon, unfortunately. Many of the characters are quite unpalatable and some are truly distasteful. There is very little blood and gore, quite surprisingly. The film seems longer (MUCH LONGER!!) than it's 84 minute running time. It was originally 94 minutes long (VERY LONG!!) when the film was first known as The Return Of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It seems very strange that the film wasn't restored to it's original length for it's DVD release. But, considering the quality of the 84 minute version, perhaps that is quite long enough to endure this mess!! Only the presences of Zellweger and McConaughey save this from getting only one star, but just barely. Unless you are a real fan of Renee Zellweger, you are strongly advised to steer clear and save your money. Don't say you weren't warned!!

Summary: Real fans opinion...
Review: The original TCM is the best. 2 was alright, 3 was alright, this was better than 2 or 3. As for the new 2004 remake, it was right between the original and this one. Lots of hardcore fans seem to dislike this one, but I can never really figure out why. It's a fun movie, just like all the TCMs, just for fun, don't think of it in a mainstream oscar MTV type way and you'll be just fine.
