Summary: Most Intense Movie I have Ever Seen
Review: 27 years after it was released I finally saw The Texas Chainsaw Massacre...and loved it. So I bought the DVD. Let me tell you that the re-mastering of this film is awesome. The picture looks great, with very little grain, and the stereo soundtrack is creepy and really, really effective...in fact the movie would not work without it (ala Night of the Living Dead) .Surprisingly, this movie has almost no gore. Which is another reason, I guess why this film remains so respectable. I love horror films and am somewhat jaded by now because of all the over-the-top horror films we've been subjected to at this point, but let me say that this is probably the MOST INTENSE MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN. Never have I heard so much screaming in a movie before, making the film even more believable. Although the story was most likely embellished somewhat for Hollywood, this film IS based on actual events. Highly recommended DVD, although you may want to take a valuum afterwards!

Summary: Pure Terror
Review: The greatest thing about this film is the fact that all the "gore" that people say is shown in this movie, and isn't, is implied. You are forced to use your imagination instead of the camera showing you what to think. The chainsaw, the meat hook, the graphic descriptions of cattle slaughtering - it's all psychological. The sound effects are also highly effective in playing with your mind. This film is not only a cult classic, but one of the greatest horror movies of all time.

Summary: Grandaddy ("Grandpa") of the slasher film genre.
Review: This is IT! The one that started it all! It may not be the best horror film ever made, but it is certainly my favorite. The 1974 cult/slasher film classic..."The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"!

Summary: 4 friends out on a seemingly normal summer afternoon drive find their average reality being turned into their worst nightmare as they are tortured and killed one-by-one by a family of psychotic cannibals.

This film really stands out among most films in this particular genre because of several reasons:

#1 The film doesn't really have that much of a plot. Normally lack of a plot would kill a movie, but not in this case. Infact, the lack of a detailed story line only heightens the tension one feels while viewing this film, giving it a more realistic, documentary-like feel. You could actually end up reading about an incident like this in the morning paper. The film was actually inspired by true incidents (more on that later).

#2 The stars of the film gave very straightforward and realistic performances. This helps in creating a scary atmosphere because it gives the characters a feel of realism. For most of the actors and actresses in the film, this was their first role in a motion picture so they didn't go around carrying acting reputations with them. Instead, they played their parts in a very "normal" way, allowing the viewer to be able to feel as though they are actually there on screen with them, experiencing the terrors as they happen in a very real way.

#3 The music, comprised mostly of the sounds of pots and pans being played as instruments, is very chilling and only further helps in creating an ominous and terrifying atmosphere. I think its amazing that no one has ever released a soundtrack to this film.

#4 Another factor that helps make this a very chilling film is the fact that it was inspired (not necessarily based) on a true story. Although the message at the beginning of the film claims that the events did actually happen and are entirely true, the viewer should not believe everything they hear and see happening in the film to be accurate.

In the film it is a family of 4 cannibals that do the killing and torturing. In reality, the terrifying acts were carried out by a single person, named Ed Gaines (believe thats the correct name).

The part about Leatherface wearing the faces of his victims, however, is entirely true. This was one of Ed's favorite past times after skinning and butchering his human prey.

One thing that film left out all together was the fact that Ed also had a split personality - there was the side of him that was "Ed" and there was also the side of him that was his dead mother (a fact that would be used as inspiration for Hitchock's 1960 classic "Psycho").

All things considered, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is truly a very terrifying, and enjoyable, B-grade horror film. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who loves horror movies, or to anyone who is just a big film buff. If you have seen it, watch it again. If you haven't seen it yet, make it a point to do so.

Three sequels followed: "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2", "Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III", and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation". The only one that even comes close to comparing to the original is part 3, but it fails miserably in its attempt to do so.

There is also a documentary on the making of the original entitled "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: A Family Portrait", which is truly a must see for the films die hard fans.

Summary: One of the best films of the '70s--no kidding.
Review: I can't tell you what an original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is, nothing else like it in the world and completely successful in its dogged pursuit of capturing something intensely disturbing (and yet completely satisfying and jubilant--go figure). The deeply weird all-male family is quintessential Americana dementia--the goony birthmarked hitchhiker, bulky Leatherface in his black tie, the frustrated father ("Look what your brother did to the door!"), and of course, the blood-hungry nearly dead Grandpa. Will you think I'm mentally balanced if I say that they evoke pity and sympathy as well as horror? They do! There is something undeniably bittersweet about them. The thwarted Leatherface swinging his chainsaw impotently through the air at sunrise on the highway at the end of the movie is one of the classic images of cinema. You must brave this movie. Any reluctance on your part will be redeemed.

Summary: Stop here for great barbeque
Review: Five friends driving in South Texas run low on gas and stop at an abandoned childhood home. Funny how they all seem to disappear while the next door neighbors sell barbeque out at their roadside stand. A blueprint for many horror films that followed; it's relentless, terrifying, claustrophobic, and nerve wracking. Like Hitchcock, director Tobe Hooper is skilled at getting you to imagine that you're seeing more violence on the screen than you actually are, and you'll no doubt be sitting limp in your chair by the time this is over. Despite this movie's reputation, the blood is discreetly let. The DVD version is a beautiful print, in line with Hooper's original vision. Included are some deleted scenes and bloopers, along with theatrical trailers as well as trailers for the sequels. The gang returned in 1986 for slick Part 2; the other sequels are best avoided.

Summary: what a joke!!!
Review: I couldn't believe how bad this movie was. "It's so disturbing!" "It's so scary, I couldn't even fall asleep at night!!!", thats all I heard then I watched it. First thing, best part is when Franklin goes tumbling down the hill in the wheelchair and his arms are flapping about, this almost got us on the floor laughing, a real rewind moment. And after that its pretty much over. The story is so bad its a wonder how it even got to be such a "cult classic", the story is so bad that I was upset such drivel is making so much money. Of course its "underground" and they make no money...right!!!

I would really like to know what type of gas Leatherface is using because he goes forever, if I could get my hands on that gas I'd make millions! And if you really want to watch this movie make sure you get ready for almost 30 minutes of nothing but female screaming and that ever lasting chainsaw going and going and going and going etc etc. Its terrible. The most I got from this movie was reading a review where the guy said leatherface should have the voice of Curly Fine - "whoop, whoop..." great stuff.

Summary: low budget...so what
Review: not all movies need millions of dollars, comercialism, and grammys to be awesome movies. as a matter of fact, the texas chainsaw massacre just about lacked ALL of that and STILL went on to be 1 of the greatest films of all time ,not just in horror, but OVERALL. a cannibalistic family eats people and makes chairs and other house hold materials out of bones from HUMANS. they rob graves for meat. they KILL for meat. and how terrifying. leatherface chases his victoms on foot with a chain saw and cuts them up like i thanksgiving turkey. this was a very disturbing film. it didnt really have much blood but the feel was certainly there. when saly was tied up to the chair at the dinner table , her screams, her attitude, the way she acted out her FEAR, and the camera angels were what was scarey about this movie.she acted so well in this movie. she was so scared and couldnt even think anymore , and we as the audience actually FELT that. she acted so well , we FELT her FEAR. we were just as terrifyed as the character(sally) was. and how horrifying it is to be invited over for dinner just to BE DINNER.

Summary: #2 Horror Film of all time?
Review:

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE
Marilyn Burns, Paul A. Partan, Edwin Neal, Jim Siedow, Gunner Hansen 1974

Synopsis
This is the bizarre and tragically gruesome account of what happened to five young friends one summer afternoon in rural Texas. After hearing reports of a grave robbing, the group sets out to check on a family grave. Soon after, they fall prey to cannibalistic family.

My Review
This well renown movie brings out completely opposite emotions in people. Some love it, while others think it is a vile .... But it still remains, to this day, an excellent, low budget, short, and incredibly disturbing horror classic.

Summary: The REAL lesson in low-budget horror
Review: For the many of you who embraced Blair Witch (far more than it deserved) as a noble low-budget cause, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, along with Night of the Living Dead, is the REAL lesson in how to make a low budget horror movie. Unlike the Blair Witch creators, Tobe Hooper still manages to use his meager resources to introduce such apparently novel features as solid story structure; tight functional script; riveting suspense sequences and a (literally) blistering climax. The more one engages with Texas Chainsaw Massacre as a low-budget masterpiece, the more you realize there can be no excuse for the decidedly un-pioneering, artless, suspense-less Blair Witch Project. Hooper's superbly rendered, all-encompassing atmosphere of impending dread and depravity has never been equaled. The dialogue, set design and sound effects interact moodily and powerfully to convey a distinct, unsettling feeling of unprecedented evil closing in on the protagonists. And then the movie DELIVERS on that expectation as well. No stupid wandering around in the woods non-drama for Hooper. Instead his set-up is as compelling as his pay-off is violent (that little irrelevancy called story structure again...) Imagine the horror and intensity of Deliverance and times it by ten to get an idea of what you're in for with Chainsaw. For horror collectors, this is an essential acquisition as one of the key antecedents - and one of the best examples - of the now ubiquitous splatter/slasher sub-genre, as well as the cannibal and mad hillbilly crazes that passed through horror in the seventies. If you thought Bonnie and Clyde, Soldier Blue and The Wild Bunch pushed the envelope of screen violence in the early Seventies, then Texas Chainsaw Massacre saws it to shreds. A must-own for any decent horror collection.
