Rating: Summary: A Horror Masterpiece Review: It is to the credit of this film that so many people thought that it was a true story, although in the commentary track on this DVD, director Tobe Hooper admits that the date shown at the beginning of the film (August 18, 1973) was a few weeks in the future at the time of production. The film simply works.A true horror film is difficult to come by these days. Many filmmakers go for satire and pop-culture in-jokes. That's fine, for what it is, but there is still an audience for a film that is designed to scare and disturb. This one fits the bill perfectly. First, it does not have a slick Hollywood look or feel to it. As others have said, it has a certain documentary quality, which lends to the realism and believability. Also, it is absolutely relentless in its single-minded attempt to disturb its audience, which is precisely what a proper horror film should be. For this DVD edition, the film has been restored to its original widescreen format, which makes more of a difference than one might think for this type of movie. Also, the commentary track is very entertaining (which is something that cannot be said for such tracks on all DVDs) and informative. For fans of horror or good independent films, this is a must-have that has been given its due in this superb DVD. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Hey Sally wait...I hear something Review: "You..you can take me to my house, you could have dinner with us" No it's alright mate, i think i'll pass on that one. What a terrific and terrorfying film surely the best of the slashers even seperating it's self.Instead of Hooper taking gore and bloodshed as its driving point he took pure fear and shock and displayed it so realisticaly that you feel you are actually sat at the dinner table facing the canibalistic atrocities of the family.Where as films such as friday the thirteenth and the nightmare on elm street series intreeged the audience because of the pure gore and the ridiculous deaths throughout, texas chainsaw looks for a more intelectual audience. I know many people who saw the film expecting peoples veins to be played like puppet strings or when opening a cupboard to find their boyfriend with an arrow stuck through his eye. These people hated the film, thought it was boring and unimagenative, for this i do partly blame the title but i also think that these people are both stupid and have no idea what a good film is.These people thought "apocalypse now" was slow and that "Final destination" was really clever. No it wasn't it was an episode of dawsons creek with a few deaths here and there. One of the reasons that i feel this film was so good was the realism of the whole thing, completely unknown actors who potray their characters so believably (even grandpa).I truely believe that the hitchhiker should have won an oscar i mean where did they find that freak. With the annoyance of traditional horrors your thinking "look for christs sake run!" and by god does sally run i think she could have done the marathon if only they had Gunnar Hansen behind her weilding a chainsaw the whole race, and "jump out the window jump out the window" ("no not the old man!"). I mean your hearts really in it to the end instead of "you complete fool, you diserve to die" it's "yes! the shovell now hit him".The family also are pretty believable a bunch of ex slaughter house inbreads who only know how to kill and cook.Their just so stupid with the old man wanting to take charge all the time trying to blame his brother\son always, at one point he stands there saying "you you.... you you broke the door your damn fool!". What i love about this film is that it must have cost nothing i mean theres no fancy camera work its like a documentry especially the scenes in the van. There is no real music in the film no "jaws" type dur dut dur dut when you know someones gonna get it it's just bang with the mallet then slam of the door. Also what makes it more realistic is that you don't know who's gonna survive if anyone, personaly i thought the first guy to go was gonna be the hero. With big budget horrors you know that LL Cool J's gonna survive and it really takes the fun out of it and blatently (as mentioned in scream) anyone having sex or smoking pot i.e kevin bacon is going to get a spear through their throats. Hooper Hooper why did you make the sequal? Ok you had a contract but did you have to make it so crap? I mean what was Hopper doing in it? I think after he stopped taking drugs his mind went a bit loopy. It goes against everything the original stood for big budget, famous stars, serious bloodthurst the people who you thought were gonna die or survive did.Was that guy with the plate supposed to be the reincarnation of the hitchhiker? To me it was a huge mistake and grandpa would never have made it another 10 years i'm not sure if it was supposed to be a spoof comedy it was funny but not ha ha funny. They showed way too much of the family for them to be a mystery and the chainsaw battle with hopper was ridiculous. Back to the original classic which in it's day must have sent audiences half mad from the adrenalin rush.Ok i'll admit that i saw it at the cinema on it's rerealise a couple of years ago but surely that means the scare hasn't dated at all 20 odd years years later i remember a viewing a while ago when a girl turned to me and said "how can you actually watch this it's your worst nightmare?" Which proves my point that it is no specially effected horror film it's pure in your face shock and terror, truely your worst nightmare, the great video nasty that when it suddenly ends you turn to your friend who witnessed this horrific and macabre display and say "f**king hell" If you havn't seen it and are bored with the oh so clever scream series then make it a must. And remember "you kids don't wanna go messin' round no old house".
Rating: Summary: Moving near documentary on rural poverty Review: This is a poignant plea on behalf of the rural unemployed, downsized by an indifferent capitalist society and what happens to them when they are left to fend for themselves. The film focuses on an ordinary family forced to carry on with what they know the best way they can when the local slaughterhouse is closed and they are thrown out of work. One son is forced to scrape a desperate living taking photos of tourists and selling them for a few bucks. His overtures are cruelly rebuffed by some privileged youngsters. Turning to sculpture as a means of expressing himself and his frustrations, he is met with opposition from local law enforcement who do not appreciate his efforts. A little used gas station is not enough to pay for furniture so the family are forced to make their own, as well as clothing and even lampshades. The head of the house hold also has to handle another son who is often left on his own in the house during the day. Damaging the door makes things even more difficult for the struggling family who are forced into cannabalism just to survive. In a desperate cry for help they kidnap a young girl, but her privileged middle class background will not allow her to accept their poor table manners and she selfishly flees without helping, despite all the boy's pitiful attempts to communicate his anguish and convince her to stay. When America becomes the Marxist United States, this sort of thing will not happen.
Rating: Summary: not hooper's best, that's BS, but a must see and scary Review: Let's clear something up. TCM is not Hooper's best movie. He is an amazingly talented horror director, but a lot of this is just shock value and dated gore. It has a certain sickening atmosphere and something hard to name about it that both repulss and yet attracts in a bizarre way while preventing it from being another stupid slasher movie, but I think "Salem's Lot" is still Hooper's best. It has substance, suspense, tension like a demon from hell, and pays off for the viewer's patience. TCM, on the other hand, is too obvious and what we see from the beginning is what we get till the end. it is without doubt a fascinating, sickening, weird study of madness and maybe even a philosophical tale about man's illusions of superiority to the animalistic and the primal when the reality is that his primitive side is quite real and perhaps predominating (i may be reading too much into it, but i don't think so). and it IS a horror classic and a must own, but the popular misconception of it being the landmark of hooper's career is simply bogus.
Rating: Summary: This movie totally hacks it! (no pun intended) Review: In the hot summer of 1973 a movie was created. It was a movie which set the trend of horror movies for years to come. It was movie which shocked the world with it's depiction of 5 teenagers falling victim to a chainsaw welding maniac known as 'Leatherface'. However, the movie was not full of blood or gore as you might expect from low budget movies. The movie is known as 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre'. Superbly directed by Tobe Hooper, this horror flick will send chills down your spine. Starring Gunnar Hansen as the maniac human cannibal, you will find yourself enthralled in the movie which was banned in over 5 countries and was only recently awarded a certificate in the UK. When I bought 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' on DVD I felt it was money well spent. You feel like you're in the movie, being chased through the woods with a maniac in a mask chasing. This may sound riciculous but the concept is not entirely proposterous. Toobe Hooper was originally shooting for...get this...a PG rating!!! Yes, good enjoyable wholesome entertainment for the whole family. Granny watching Leathface cut teenagers into pieces with a chainsaw in between knitting you a new jumper. Yes, what a lovely film for all generations. Brr...woof! No, somehow I don't think this would pass as a PG, eventually it was given an R rating in the US and 18 in the UK (after it was banned). You get the feeling like this sort of thing could happen, and indeed it has. The movie is based on the exploits of Ed Gein who cut up his victims and ate them. The DVD itself is very cool. Excellent extras including commentry by Toobe Hooper and Gunnar Hansen, this is a movie which you will keep coming back to again and again. Buy! Buy you fools!
Rating: Summary: TOBE HOOPER'S THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE Review: A MEMBER OF THE TEXAN FLESH EATING SAWYER FAMILY LEATHERFACE SOMETIMES CALLED BUBBA OR JUNIOR BY HIS BLOOD RELATIONS SIMILAR TO REAL LIFE MASS MURDERER ED GEIN GUNNAR HANSEN IS THE BEST AND MOST GRUESOME LEATHERFACE OF ALL TIME
Rating: Summary: Classic Horror Review: This film is way out there... it is great! It is a classic from the guy that brought you Salem's Lot. This is a great story with a crazy plot that makes it even more original than most of todays crappy horror movies. I guess I took away one star because it starts kind of slow and also if you see this film once you probably won't like it. You have to see it at least twice.
Rating: Summary: not even remotely close to resembling anything great Review: How can you call this movie one of the greatest ever??? That is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard!
