Summary: Just so people know...
Review: This is a fine dvd, with good features and tasty packaging. But no one seems to have commented on the fact that it's letterboxed. Let me explain myself here, I love letterbox and firmly believe in seeing the whole image. However, this film was shot in 16mm, which means it's aspect ratio is square and fits on television screens as is. So those little black bars are in this case only covering the top and bottom of the image. Why on earth this was done is a mystery to me. Maybe to cater to people with 16:9 televisions? Also the THX people really did effect the look of the film, as the colors are noticeably different from earlier dvds. Now this is fine, there's nothing wrong with that, but I'd venture a guess that the older editions more accurately represent what The Evil Dead was when it first came out. This edition is sort of that as seen through the eyes of a digital telecine colorist technician, which may be better in some people's eyes. Personally I'd go with the Elite Entertainment version which is fullscreen and has nearly all the features this version has. This version is really more for hard-core collectors.

Summary: Classic Zombie Gore
Review: If you are a horror fan, in particular a fan of zombie flicks, this movie is for you. If you're more of the Scream/ I Know What You Did Last Summer type of horror fan then you probably won't appreciate this movie. If you haven't seen it be prepared for significant gore (the only way to kill the zombies is dismemberment). Overall, this film is something of a cult classic among horror fans and for good reason.

Summary: the best low budget horror flim of all time
Review: evil dead started it all for me. im only 15(not 12 hehe) but i saw evil dead at a young age i have alays loved it. it made me start renting more and more low budget horror movies tryin to find movies just as crazy and gory as this. i have(dead alive and a few others), but this is still probably my favorite. sam raimi and bruce campbell help too in makin this awesome, plus ive never sen a tree rape some girl before. evil dead is even better in some ways but id still go with this 1.

Review: Well once again Evil Dead has been re-released on dvd but this time the packaging tops all the previous released versions. The book that comes with the dvd is a great little history on how the years have been unkind to Evil Dead on video. Like Night Of The Living Dead, Evil Dead has seen tons of different video, laserdisc and dvd releases, and i'm sure this won't be the last DVD version either, which is good for the collector but bad for the wallet. Evil Dead today is one of the most respected horror films ever. It's amazing to think that this was a low budget film and it proves that you don't need a huge budget to pull off a good horror film. Night Of The Living Dead was the same way, low budgeted and a classic (Romero should stick to his roots with the next Dead movie and not go big budget like he's trying to do). Bottom line...Evil Dead is a classic horror film. It's full of humor, gore, cheesy special effects...everything a good horror film should have. They definetly don't make them like they use to and it's a shame for horror films everywhere!

Summary: The Best Horror Film Ever Made on a Great DVD
Review: The Evil Dead will always remain my favorite horror film. With a budget of only $300,000-$350,000 Sam Raimi managed to make the most amazing film in the horror genre. The firts hald-hour is very suspenseful but once the first deadite shows up the pace never slows. The violence is way over the top, with severed limbs and head, and more blood than any other horror flick aside from Peter Jackson's Dead Alive.
The directing is absolutley outstanding. Even in this, his first theatrical film, Sam Raimi proves that he is one of the most talented directors of all time. This movie is just so visually pleasing it's incredible. It is staggering how much the camera angles add to the clautrophobic nature of this movie.
And this Book of the Dead edition DVD is amazing. It is hands down the best packaging for any DVD yet. The DVD comes tucked in the back of the real Book of the Dead from the film. It looks and feels as if it is made out of flesh, and every page of the book is inside. And what's this? The characters inside the book are actually in fancy English letters that thank all of the fans of this horror trilogy! Also, there is a seperate insert, a little booklet, tucked into the back of the Book of the Dead near where the DVD itself is that chronicles the making of this landmark film. The DVD itself is awesome also. Widecreen, good sound, and neat extras including behind the scenes, bloopers, and a documentary by star Bruce Campbell about star Bruce Campbell. There is also some commentary tracks in there as well.
What agreat DVD. It is a little bit expensive, but it is worth ever dime for fans of this film.

Summary: Not the definitive edition
Review: Like most fans of the Evil Dead trilogy I was thrilled with Anchor Bay's spectacular book of the dead release. The packaging and extras are fantastic but the whole thing is let down by the fact that Anchor Bay have decided to put on a cropped version of the film instead of the full frame version which appeared on the Elite special edition release. The full frame version is easily the best way to view this film. If anchor bay had put the pull frame version on the book of the dead edition, it would have easily been the definitive edition, but since they havnt' I recommend buying both this version and the elite version.

Summary: Great Horror Movie
Review: Horrendous acting aside, this is truly a unique and creepy little movie. And if ever a film's commentary track could be called a work of genius, Bruce Campbell's (the film's star) would surely be it....absolutely hilarious and also quite informative and insightful. Horror buffs who don't already have this...well, you aren't really horror buffs then, are you? Buy it - and make sure you get a copy with the "extra features". There are some "imposter" copies with just the trailer as an extra.

Review: Here we are with Sam Raimi's kick off of the best cult classic trilogy ever made.Sam Raimi really knows how to deliver a good wholesome horror/comedy film.On a shoestring budget,Sam Raimi made Evil Dead what it is today.With claustrophobic settings and zany camera angles,has made Sam Raimi a unique film director.Evil Dead is about a group of college kids that go up to a cabin for a vacation.The cabin is so eerie looking that we already get a sense of horror and disaster.As they enter and settle into the cabin,mysterious things happen.Like Ash's sister's hand getting possessed and drawing a distorted picture of The Book of the Dead,and when the cellar door msyeriously slams open.Of cours,we all know what happens,they go down the cellar,find the book of the dead,and read it.Then,after that,all the mayhem and gore of Evil Dead immediately starts.Kicking off with one of the most memorable scenes in a movie(ash's sister getting violated by the woods). Through the whole movie,Ash is sort of a coward.Afraid to confront his friends,sister,and girlfriend who all turn into zombies.Heck,I would be too by the way they looked.But,hey,this is the kick off of our favorite hero Ash.I do like the fact though that Sam Raimi made Bruce Campbell's character a coward hero rather than a Bruce Willis type of brave,muscle bound hero. The movie is filled with gross out gore and some comedic parts.Half the time Ash is getting slammed into a shelf on the wall or a cabinet,making it look hilarious.Even though this movie was filled with all these great things,I did think it was the worst one in the series.Don't get me wrong though,I did like it.I just thought it was more boring than the ED2 and AOD. If your a big fan of cult classic horror fans,Sam Raimi,or Bruce Campbell,then rent it and dont buy it unless you like it alot or a huge fan of the 3 listed above.

Summary: Ah, too many Evil Dead DVD versions
Review: Well, as far as the actual movie itself the Elite DVD version is superior. I have both the Book Of The Dead Anchor Bay edition and the Elite version. The Anchor Bay version is very nice just for the extras and packaging (even though it smells like model glue!). However, the Elite version presents the movie in it's original 1:33 full-screen aspect ratio, exactly as it was filmed and originally released. The Anchor Bay versions present The Evil Dead in a new 1:85 Widescreen transfer which actually blocks out some of the movie at the top and bottom of the screen. It looks nice, but was it really necessary? Anchor Bay is by far my favorite DVD company, but they really goofed up on the Widescreen transfer in The Book Of The Dead...they should have included both the new Widescreen and Original full-screen versions. Oh well, the Elite version has recently went down in price to where if you are a fan of The Evil Dead you can just buy both editions.
