Rating: Summary: More of a comedy than horror Review: After the events of "Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn", a man is sent mack to midieval times to battle the undead. There is nothing scary about this movie. There are some action and some funny elements, but those make the movie enjoyable to watch. I recommend this fun movie--just don't let minors watch this film, because there might be parts to the movie that might scare them.
Rating: Summary: Gimme some sugar baby... Review: This is a terrific film! The "Bootleg" version makes it even better. Prior to buying this dvd I had Army Of Darkness on special edition VHS with the origional ending at the end of the tape and not much else. I decided to grab this DVD because it offers the ever elusive deleted scenes and cut footage making the film an entire 15 minutes longer. This film should not be confused with its two predecessors however, this is not what I would consider a horror film at all. Aside from a big geyser of blood theres not much true horror in it. It's more of some odd amalgamation of Robin Hood, Lawrence of Arabia, and Three Stooges. This movie has probably some of the greatest one liners ever, one of the most heavily quoted films even to this day. Slapsticky humor. And, in this version, a little romance. It expands on the windmill scene and it makes a little more sense. It does, however, change a couple lines, in my oppinion for the better. It expands a little bit Ash's confrontation with Evil Ash. There's a little bit more gore. The end battle scene is expanded. Most people who look at this and haven't seen the film before should probably try renting it first cause it's one of those movies you either love... or hate. And I wouldn't recommend this version for just any old Joe Blow Amry of Darkness fan either. This is a release for the hardcore fans. Ok so thats what I have to say about the film itself heres some info on the DVD features and stuff. The DVD is as well done as any of the other movies in the series. Some nice special features. Really cool deleted scense, about 4 I think, as always Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell have you in stitches on the commentary track. Yes it does get kinda fuzzy at ONE part, that I am aware of, and it's only maybe about 30 seconds of... less than perfect quality picture, not nearly as bad as it has been described. The sound is great on this one, most 80's-early 90's DVDs they make all seem to have a severe lack of bass to explosions and gunfire and such, this one however, had a perfect job on the sound. Like I've said I would only recommend this to hardcore fans of the film series.
Rating: Summary: OK LISTEN UP YOU PRIMITIVE SCREWHEADS! Review: This movie is a hoot!. I knew it would be from the beginning where it picks up where Evil dead 2 left. Ash ends up in the 12th century somewhere I guess in Europe ( oh yeah his car comes with him too) Right away the "primitive screwheads" have poor Ash in shackles making him jump into the pit with the demons that lay below. Of course he wastes both of them. The plot is once again about the book Necronomicon, which Ash needs to go back to his time and the village's wiseman tells Ash he must recite a phrase to retrieve the book, there is 3 located in this spooky cemetary. Ash of course goofs up the incantation and up starts coming the deadites (skeletons of course) who begin attacking Ash with 3 stooges routines ..i.e eye pokes finger in the mouth etc. But the real trouble starts when Ash's bad side comes out of a broken mirror (bad little Ash's) who mess with Ash in humourous ways, then one little ash jump down Ash's throat. Of course you can guess what transpires next This movie is a goof SFX are ok, the sets are good no complaints really. My wife also enjoyed this film Way to go Ash.. Um what about an Evil Dead 4?
Rating: Summary: Extremely entertaining - comedy Review: This review refers to the "Official Bootleg Edition" -- brown paper bag. This is a 1992 film that I wish would have transferred better to DVD. Many times the picture is blurry and out-of-focus. It is also not a true widescreen presentation. However, the framing, composition, and action sequences are so nicely done that I've bumped it up to 4 stars. You will have to watch this DVD in darkness or a totally blackened room because the final fight scene is so dark one can barely make out the action. Perhaps this is because of animation and is necessary to cover up strings, etc. Music and sound are good, not great, and there is a bit of surround sound. How refreshing to have a movie NOT end with a rap song. The female lead Embeth Davidtz is very beautiful and a real treat for the eyes. Very much a plus added to this movie. The skeleton war is advanced for cinema, past and present, and puts "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns" to shame. I feel that the movie holds up on its' own, but recommend watching the two previous "Evil Dead" movies so you know who Ash is. There is no gory violence here; it is almost suitable for children to watch except for some vulgar language. It is a comedy -- understand that and you won't be disappointed. There is no booklet enclosed with this package, only a Chapter List. I really enjoyed this one and will probably watch it again prior to observing my other two "Evil Dead" movies.
Rating: Summary: Beware the Bootleg edition! Review: I love Army of Darkness. I Grew up on it. Its a classic movie but the print on the bootleg edition is horrible at times. During the whole end fight scene you cant see a thing. Why they released it like it was taped off someones old Beta version is beyond me. Some scenes are crystal clear while others you need to stand 2 inches away from the t.v. to see anything. trust me its worth the extra 4 bucks for the original version i just learned the hard way.
Rating: Summary: Gooffy satire at its best. Review: I will tell you what. When I got finished with watching "Army of Darkness" I was totally blown away at how much different this was than "The Evil Dead". It is about the guy who lived through the first 2 Evil Deads getting sucked into the past through the Famous Book of the Dead. Millions of years back. I won't give any more away in case you wanted to see this flim. Just know that it is not as scary as the "Evil Dead", but rather a hunderd times sillier than the first "Evil Dead". It also makes fun of a lot of stuff. "Army of Darkness" also has one of the cheesist screenplays known to mankind. One can either hold it aginst the movie, along with bad acting, and cheep special effects(and trust me, the long list things gose on) and say the movie really [stunk]. The other option is to look at it the way I did and say it was supposed to be dumb, but at leats it entertained, and I though is was very funny. Bottom line is if you can just let loose and injoy really wackey things, then this is a must see.
Rating: Summary: Gimme Some Sugar Baby! Review: Not Citizen Kane, but fun and one of my favorites.
Rating: Summary: ARMY OF DARKNESS DIRECTORS CUT ( bootleg) Review: the bootleg edition of the movie is the re-release of the limited edition directors cut it has 15 minutes extra footage added including the original ending this is one of my favorite movies of all time and its great to see it appearing so often on dvd in different versions THE TRANSFER the video is great until you get to the added footage (mostly the windmill scene and end battle) this footage is quite bad and unless your an ...dead fan and must own every version of the film get the thx mastered theatrical version . Having said that the movie itself is more enjoyable with the extra footage and the original ending fits the film better its just a shame it is of poor quality THE AUDIO only the original dolby 2 chanell plus an excelent commentary track by BRUCE CAMPBELL and SAM RAIMI THE EXTRAS actor bruce campbell and director sam raimi commentary 4 deleated scenes all with commentary storyboards animated menus OVERALL the dvd is a nice addition to the versions of the film currently available and the new footage is fun and should never have been cut but if you want the film looking its best stick with the original THX version
Rating: Summary: This is my BOOM STICK! Review: There are few movies that just make me roll but this was one of them. I didn't see until it came on the Dish one lazy saturday and I couldn't turn it off. Bruce Campbell is my hero. He has such a funny "I have taken enough..." attitude in this movie, it is perfect. Everyone in the movie is a little nuts and the subtle humor just kills me - sorry about the pun! Definitely on my list of all time fun movies. It doesn't have large boats, roman gladiators, cannibals or wasn't a screen version of some fancy smancy book I never read and never will, it doesn't have a fancy studio splash screen at the beginning, and it certainly doesn't portray some "cause". Thank God. We need movies that are nothing like that. I rarely give those 5 stars either. But if I plunk down my hard earned dough and own the bugger and I enjoy watching it many times, it deserves 5 stars. Ok it's not a perfect film but it's damn good and worth every penny.
Rating: Summary: Horror spoofed in a tasteful manner Review: I first watched Army Of Darkness a few months ago on reccomendation from a friend who said to me, "Anyone who isn't in the floor the entire time they're watching this has something wrong with them." The third in the Evil Dead series, this one takes place immediately after Evil Dead II ends. Whisked away into the year 1300, Ash, the hero of the Evil Dead series, must do battle with the forces of the undead to protect the living, as well as the Necronomicon, or "Book of the Dead." After watching it the first time, I disagreed with my friend's analysis. But, after watching it a second time, I found it so funny that I was still quoting dialogue several weeks later. Unlike other horror film spoofs like Scary Movie, which concentrated on jokes concerning a certain part of the male anatomy, Army Of Darkness instead chooses slapstick comedy as the basis for its laughs, as well as a few jabs at classic films like Jason And The Argonauts and The Day The Earth Stood Still. If you like to laugh and you like the "gross factor" that a horror film can provide, then look no further than Army Of Darkness.
