Summary: Fantastic Start
Review: Season one of Buffy is fantastic. All of the Buffy trademarks are there: the witty dialogue, pop-culture references, and the use of horror elements to symbolize the human experience (HIGH SCHOOL IS HELL!)The chemistry between the cast gels early on and the acting is great, especially for a new show. The angst and darkness that characterized later seasons is minimal in this first season and the humor quotient is way up. Buffy (and Angel) maintained an almost un-paralleled level of consistency through-out its run. It's great to see the introductions of characters and plotlines and are referenced and have resonance all the way through the last season. This first season is the blueprint for all future ones: There is one, season long, umbrella story. Some episodes are devoted to this story while some are stand alone. Because it was a mid-season replacement there's only 12 episodes. It's a great introduction to all seven seasons of the series, but, it also works well as a stand-alone mini-series (though I can't imagine anyone watching these 12 hours and not wanting more!)

Review: I had no problem with with these DVDs. In oder to get the extras, one just needs to click on them from the menu and hit enter. Simple. My experience is do not always rely on the remote's features, like the extras button. Do it the hard way!Otherwise, this is a great DVD set!! I f you love Buffy then you'll love this.

Summary: Episodes Are Great, Extras Aren't
Review: I love this show, and was thrilled when they began putting the seasons on DVD, but there is a HUGE problem. I can't get to any of the extras on the DVD, like photos and scripts. I have the correct button on my DVD remote, but when I push it, I get a black circle with a line through it on the screen. It doesn't work. Same goes for Season 2 DVDs, and the same thing happened with "Angel," Season 1. This is a HUGE technical problem, one which I wrote to the company about, but got no response. For shame!

Summary: Excellent beginning to a one of a kind series
Review: The first season of Buffy was great. Although short compared to the other seasons it gets off on a good foot and leaves you wanting more. Luckily season two completely satisfies the craving temporarily. Too bad this show ended but alas all good things must come to an end. The ironic thing is I never really watched much of Buffy until it did come out on DVD. I fell in love with it the first moment I watched it and I know you will too.

Summary: An okay first season with a few gems.
Review: Season one.My least favorite season of Buffy.Still gets a 5 though because it began the best show ever and I always get a lot of nostalgia seeing it again.During,season one,the show was so simple and happy-going.Sometimes,I miss that.Strong points include the characters and the dialogue of course.This is what hooked me on the show and when I saw Prophecy Girl,I knew they were going to do a lot with such complex characters.Unfortunately,weak points include the boring story-arc and the very funny but quite uninteresting Master.Well,can't get everything right the first time.Some episodes are painfully boring.Notably Teacher's Pet and I,Robot....You,Jane.
But the gems Angel and Prophecy Girl are so outstanding.
The rest is entertaining but nothing special.Buffy is the best show I've ever seen.But season one is not the best first season I have ever seen.Well,it's necessary to watch this to see Buffy's earliest and most simple days.By the way,the picture quality isn't that bad.It's subpar for dvd but you have to expect it out of 16 mm film.So don't bash it too much.I mean,it's better than tv broadcoasts.If you have never watched the show,I do highly recommend you get it now.But remember that the real meat does not come until season two.So,before you say Buffy is overrated,watch season two.One thing I love about season one is that the character development which happens in later seasons is hinted at.At times,you can see Buffy acting more like she does later on for example.One small complaint I have is that Cordelia is way too underrused in season one.She is so funny.I complain because she is a regular but she does pretty much nothing until the final two episodes.Characters I enjoy the most watching during season one are Buffy,Xander and Giles.I love Willow but not as much in this season.Overall,an okay season that starts the show in a nice but not great way.Only worth getting if you're going to get the other seasons,too.On its own,it's good but with the others you'll appreciate it even more because these are the 12 episodes that started this wonderful show after all.Oh and the extras suck on this dvd except for the Joss Whedon commentaries.

Summary: The beginning of an icon.
Review: The first season of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer was a shaky one. The actors and actresses had yet to fully grasp their characters, the special effects were very campy and low-budgeted, and the writing was sub-par compared to the sophisticated episodes that would be made for future seasons. However, with that said, Buffy: Season 1 has a very hip and fun sense to it. Buffy's angst at this time felt a little simpler, which made for some hysterical episodes. Plus, you get prehaps one of the coolest Buffy villians of all time... the Master (who, quite oftenly, steals the show in a wicked way).

Summary: Where it all began
Review: While I have reviewed all the other seasons of Buffy, I would be remiss if I didn't write a little bit about season one. This is where it all starts, and as far as first seasons go, Buffy did it better then most. I would point to the writing as the key to the success here, with Xander really being the character that stuck out, at least in my mind, as the one that really kept things moving throughout the entire season. In a season where Buffy, Angel, Willow, and Giles really were not molded into their true characters yet, Xander (and to an extent Cordelia) was the character that was able to make us laugh, and at the same time keep us interested. The villian role of season one is played by the Master. The Master really did set a fine standard for big bads to come, and as a testament to his effectiveness I would point to numerous special guest appearences he did in Buffy season two and three in past or alternate relatity sequences and in Angel season 2 in regards to the Darla arc, whom is another chacater we meet (briefly as she is dusted until he revival on Angel some three years later) in this season. If you love Buffy, you have to have this, simple as that. It's the beginning, the Book of Genesis if you will of the Buffy Bible. Sure you'll wince at villians like Moolach (or however you spell it), and sometimes you may get a bit bored. But I urge you to keep it all in context as this was the very first season of Buffy.

Summary: Simply put... some of the best TV ever created
Review: Before you skip ahead to the next review, let me say something to you: No matter who you are; how old or young; the kind of TV you usally enjoy... I guarantee that you will love "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". I'll admit, I was originally turned off by the campy title, but trust me- this is excellent television. "Buffy" has it all- action, adventure, gross out, horror, drama, comedy, romance. Everything. Let me explain. Buffy Summers is the Chosen One. She alone has the strength and skill to slay the demons that walk the earth. After she burns down the gym of her high school in LA, she moves to Sunnydale, California with her mother. Sunnydale is a normal enough town: except of course for the fact that it sits on the very mouth of hell. Throw in the warm-hearted friendships Buffy makes with Xander, Willow and Giles, the gorgeous, broody Angel (a vampire with a soul) and the spectacular writing and you have yourself the best TV show ever. Let me give you an example of each of the aspects fo the show mentioned above: 1)Action/ Adventure: Buffy is constantly fighting some kind of evil. Would you like to see her turn vampires into dust? How about a cheerleader with her arms on fire? Or a giant preying mantis? The fight scenes are amazing and they'll have you glued to the screen.
2)Gross Out: A pig is slaughtered, Buffy touches a brain, a girl's heart is ripped out and ... Xander drinks an entire gallon of Gatorade without taking a breath.
3)Horror: From The Master (a vampire who plots to kill the entire town of Sunnydale) to a creepy clown with a knife to a puppet to a pack of murderous high school students. This show will creep you out. In a good way.
4)Drama: You only need to watch the scene in which Buffy overhears Giles and Angel talking in "Prophecy Girl" to understand the depth of the drama in this show. It also proves that Sarah Michelle Geller is an unbelievable actress.
5)Comedy: Every single episode will make you laugh. Somehow, the writers have found a way to mix light-hearted humor with vampires and demons. It works so well.
6)Romance: Willow is crushing on Xander. Giles and Miss Calendar are fighting. And, of course, the amazing relationship of Buffy and Angel. So heartbreaking and beautiful. This is the start of it all, folks. Get every season of "Buffy", but don't miss the underrated first season! Favorite Episodes:

Summary: An overlooked season of Buffy
Review: The first season of Buffy is really overlooked. That's a shame because it is one of the best seasons in the series. This is the season where the great love between Buffy and Angel began. It is also the season that gave birth to the most essential parts of the continuity that is in the Angel series. "Angel" and "Prophecy Girl" are two of the finest episodes of any television series and it is a tragedy that they are overlooked when they are compared to lousy overrated Buffy episodes like "Once More with Feeling" and "Hush."
The "Angel" episode is a fantastic hour of television because it tells the tragic story of a man that is forced to look at the sins of his past in a believable light. It is also great because it really breathed some new light into the "star-crossed-lovers" formula and it gave us our first glimpse of the tragic and touching Buffy/Angel love story.
"Prophecy Girl" is another truly great episode of Buffy because it focuses on dying young in a way that is not sappy or cheesy and it really makes you see what you have to do in order to be a true hero in the end.
This is a can't miss purchase if you love Buffy and Angel. Do yourself a favor and buy this set. The only thing that could ever be better than this is the second season Buffy DVD set.
