Description:

Apart from its appealing price, the Apex AD-1700M offers a choice of video outputs, including high-resolution component-video, and it handles just about every disc type out there, from DVD-Video to CD, MP3, and WMA CD. With JPEG image and Kodak Picture CD playback, you can use recordable CDs to create digital-photo slideshows for playback on your living room television.

At this price, you can't expect high-end features like progressive scanning or 3:2 pulldown, but the AD-1700M offers support both NTSC (North American) and PAL (European) video formats, so long as the region encoding allows (discs must be encoded for Region 1 or all regions). The player's power supply is switchable between 110V and 220V AC power sources, though be aware that the two-pronged plug is fashioned for U.S. outlets.

It also offers convenient format compatibility, displaying images from Kodak Picture CDs, standard JPEG-encoded discs, and SVCD, or super video CD, a popular format for Asian films.

A screen saver keeps paused images from burning into your television if you're delayed by, say, a good book after a phone call interrupts your movie viewing, and parental controls help you keep young eyes off mature discs (high shelves are also useful in this respect). Picture zoom lets you focus on scenes in greater detail, and the unit's fluorescent video display is snazzy and easy to read.

The back panel offers one set of left/right analog-audio outputs for compatibility with stereo Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. This unit also supports both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel passthrough from a single coaxial digital-audio output for direct connection to a surround-decoding AV receiver and multichannel speaker system.

Top-of-the-line component-video outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.
