Rating: Summary: Don't buy Initial - Consider another brand Review: We bought the Initial IDM-1731 7" unit, and played 3 movies before it quit working - it either wouldn't read the DVD, or it would freeze in the midst of playing a movie. We got a replacement unit, and it played just 2 movies before it quit working - same problems as the first unit. I called Initial Technical Support, and they tried to troubleshoot the problem over the phone. They asked if the DVD was rubbing as it spun in the tray (it didn't), and that was about the extent of the support. The Technical Support person said there no recalls on the unit. We took the second unit back to Circuit City, and got our money back. They told us that 5 units had been returned the previous day. They also said that the 8" unit had problems. I would recommend another brand - we decided to buy a 7" Sony, and it works great. Yes, it costs more, but in this case you get what you pay for. The Initial unit is inexpensive, but is not worth the price. Many people are having problems with them - go visit the Circuit City website, and read reviews from others who purchased this unit. As with any electronic device, there will be lemons, but in this case, there are far too many lemons. Spend a bit more money, and get a reliable unit. For those of you who have not had problems - I am happy for you - you are lucky.
Rating: Summary: Worth every penny. Review: My family has been very happy with our Initial portable dvd player. I mean, come on, for a little more than $200 if it lasts for a year or two you've got your money's worth out of it. It beats renting one in the airport for long plane rides or car trips. We use ours for the kids on the plane rides overseas, in the car for long drives and it even comes in handy camping or around the house if you want to watch a movie and the "family dvd player" is already being used for some Disney flick. So....I'm happy with the $250 investment. It also travels well, we've banged it around a little and it works fine.
Rating: Summary: awsome Review: it never freezes, the picture quality is great, and the sound is really good too.
Rating: Summary: wish it didnt stick Review: I got the 7" for christmas and 7 new dvd's. only 2 would play without STICKING. i played them in a regular dvd player and they were fine. one person called it FREEZING, because of heat build up. mine did it within one miniute of first use. So I dont think it is just heat. I am taking it back,,and havnt decided to give another unit a try yet. The more times I tried to get some dvd's to work, the more problems accured, started to not load, wouldnt shut off, wide screen dvd.s went to a smaller size,,it just went haywire. I am wondering ifitis one someone brought back,as it was trouble from the beginning. Great picture and sound when it did play without stopping
Rating: Summary: great dvd player Review: this is great...the picture quality is awsome. the sound is pretty good if you alone, but with other people it isnt very loud. with headphones, the sound is great. the only problem is that there is only one place for headphones and so i had to buy a splitter from radioshack.
Rating: Summary: My Two-Cents Worth............ Review: I've owned the Initial Portable DVD player with the 8" screen now for almost a year, and I couldn't be happier with it. The picture quality is beautiful, and the sound (with headphones) is fabulous. The only one drawback is that the unit does heat up after awhile which can freeze up the picture, but that's only occured a couple of times. I discovered immediately that on plane trips, all one has to do to correct the heating up problem, is to aim the air jet above your head at it!!! Hope this info is useful to some. Happy New Year!
Rating: Summary: disappointed Review: I purchased this unit for my daughter for Christmas, from Circuit City for $280.00 We watched one movie on it and it was ok. The picture isn't real clear and the volume stinks, but you get what you paid for. Since that time I spent 3 days trying to get a movie to play with out it freezing up, I could only shut the power off to get it to work again. I went through 5 movies and all the same thing. Needless to say, I returned it, and I am hoping it didn't ruin my new DVD's. From the reviews I have read, I am going to shell out another 100 dollars and go with the Panisonic.
Rating: Summary: This Portable Rocks! Review: I recently received this dvd player as a gift from my parents for Christmas. At first they gave me the 4" it worked great and i liked it, but for only $50 you get an extra 3 inches, so i picked this 7" up instead. I took it home and have watched upwards of 20 dvds already, all work great all watched in full uninterrupted play! I also play my Svcds with music videos on them and they work great! for the price this is an amazing investment!**UPDATE** player still works! lots of movies since use of at least 2 hours everday... funny thing is it fell out of my top locker and fell 7 feet to the cement ground...and it still works! has a small dent but this player has NEVER froze NEVER had any problem with it EVER! it's amazing! buy it! -James
Rating: Summary: Good product Review: This product is very great. My older brother and I each got one for Christmas this year and it is great to have! The one thing about the player that isn't so great is that it freezes and sometimes will skip if you hit it to hard by accident. Other than that,it's awesome! It is not to big and bulky so it easily is stored in a car whenever you don't need it and it fits right into the back pockets of the car seats. The box the product came in had everything you would possibly need(except a carrying case). It had a cigarette lighter plug in, so you didn't always have to use the battery in the car, a battery, and plugs to hook it to a TV or into the wall. The sound is great and if its dark, you think you are in a movie theater. It has excellent picture quality and we love it!
Rating: Summary: Nice looking unit, but stopped working after 3 movies Review: 12/29/2003: This is a nice looking unit, and has a great price. However, the unit played just 3 movies before we started having problems with it. It either won't recognize the DVD loaded in the tray or freeze after playing a DVD for a short period of time if it finally does recognize the DVD loaded in the tray. It is a bit noisy when it first attempts to read the DVD, but when it has worked, it was quiet during the movie. I am taking this unit back, and getting a replacement unit. I am not ready to give up on it yet. Hopefully, the replacement unit will work. 12/30/2003 Update: I got a replacement unit yesterday. I played two DVD's and 1 CD successfully, but now the unit is not working consistently. It has trouble recognizing the disc that is loaded in the unit - same problem as with the first unit. Turning the unit off for a few minutes seems to clear things up, but that is not a good solution. Now, when playing a CD, it begins playing a track, and then freezes anywhere from 30 seconds to 3-1/2 minutes into the track. The same problem occurs when playing a DVD - it plays, and then freezes. I am taking this unit back - no more Initial for me.
