Summary: do not buy this model!!!
Review: I received this DVD player as a gift. I was thrilled and thought it was really cool. (I could watch movies while at the airport etc)
The item lasted almost 2 weeks and then... suddenly would no longer play DVDs. Nothing. It would turn on and start spinning. But nothing on the screen... and then.. it would just stop on its own.
note that I never abuse my electronic stuff and everything was handled carefully.
The worst part was when I contacted the polaroid cust service about the warranty info. It was a gift and I didn't have the receipt. They said without the receipt, there was nothing they could do for me. Thanks for nothing. It was a brand new player that lasted less then 2 weeks and they say "sorry!"

This is just a risky buy cuz the quality is so bad. Like another reviewer said, buy one from Sony or other reputable japanese makers.

I puirchased a Panasonic and have been totally happy ever since.

I know this player is cheap... like a lot of the players from China. But do yourself a favour and spend a few extra bucks for a unit that'll work when you play a disc.

Summary: Not too impressed
Review: I was so excited when I won this dvd player in a raffle. I opened the box and within a matter of minutes I was playing the dvd, it was very simple to operate. However, The thing that annoys me about this machine is that the door is very sensitive and the dvd player will reset if you bump or move it while the dvd is playing. I haven't put a whole lot of hours on it so far, so I can't speak to the longivity but I also can't be too critical because after all it was free. Now, would I buy this make and model? Can't say, but I would definitly go and see and play several others before making that decision.

Summary: still a good value
Review: I've had this unit for almost a year and it still works good, except that the lid won't stay shut. I just use a little bit of tape to hold it down. For the price, I think it is a good value nonetheless.

Summary: Good product for the price
Review: If you are looking for an entry level portable dvd player this is the way to go. It get's the basics done, keeps the kids quiet in the back seat. It does not have a lot of bells and whistles. The sound without headphones is very low, could not hear a thing in the car, ,but with the headphones on it is much better. Picture quality is average, although the settings out of the box are horrible. Everyone looked orange and any text was very fuzzy around the edges. You are able to fix most of this is you play with the adjustments. One thing I must say, on a 12 hour road trip we did not have one DVD skip the entire time.
Overall I am happy with this product. I was not looking to spend a lot of money on one of these players and I feel the Polaroid has met my expectations. Only paid $229 at BestBuy for a brand new one.

Summary: FANTASTIC!
Review: Intended purpose: Travel, keep my 17 mo old daughter occupied and another gadget for me! Also for occasional hook-up to other TV's in house
I just purchased this machine after a week of extensive research. After reading all the reviews on this site and hands-on tests in stores on models ranging from $200 - $1000, I came to the conclusion that I couldn't justify spending a whole lot of money on a machine that does the same thing that this $300 model does. I picked mine up at Costco for $279 Canadian! (It's a steal if you ask me!) I opened it up as soon as I got to the car. Right out of the box, it was a breeze to set up. I plugged it into the DC outlet with the included adapter, popped in a DVD and within seconds my daughter was enjoying All Dogs Go to Heaven.

For the price of the model, this little guy is packed! You can watch your DVD's and listen to CD's or MP3 - it even has a cool slideshow feature to view jpegs (the manual doesn't say anything about it though so it take a bit of experimenting) The remote is fantastic - even has a power button - and it works from across the room. Hook up to a TV is a breeze and the picture is nice (both on the LCD or your TV). You have to keep in mind that this is a PORTABLE unit and you can't expect to get Theater quality or HDTV quality out of a $300 machine. The speakers do the job but hooking up to headphones or a FM modulator to play through your car's stereo and the sound is excellent. I don't find anything that feels cheap or flimsy on it and unlike another post, haven't had any problems with the CD cover staying latched.

I found the best thing, so far, is the battery. This was my biggest concern in a portable unit. I wanted to make sure that I would get sufficient use of the battery since an outlet isn't always available. After charging the battery for about 3 - 3 1/2 hours (until the light turned green indicating it was charged) I tested the machine by running it non-stop. It lasted 4 hours! My daughter was able to watch All Dogs Go to Heaven, Finding Nemo, an episode of VeggieTales (1/2 hour program) and I got to watch about 20 minutes of the Matrix! I was incredibly impressed. Not only that, the machine barely heated up at all with the 4 hours of non-stop playing. This polaroid player also has an excellent anti-skip feature that works beautifully, I really banged it around and it never skipped once. The menu is extremely easy to navigate, although figuring out how to play MP3's and view jpegs took me a little bit of experimenting (you have to select the repeat button on the remote to access shuffle, repeat, repeat all, etc..) I've also had a total of 6 kids watching a movie on it at once - and none of them complained about being able to see. It has a very wide viewing angle. Overall, I've been incredibly impressed with the machine. If you want a machine that's portable with all the accessories but don't want to blow your budget - this is the machine for you. Even my A/V critical husband agrees that it was a good purchase!

Summary: Junk & Double JUNK
Review: My daughter recieved this player as a Christmas gift in 2004. She used it maybe 4 time in 2 weeks then it quite playing, no preview screen, no sound, no nothing, and on top of that the DVD door latch broke when i was trying to figure out what was wrong.

Wish I would have read some of the reviews on this product before we purchased it.

I recently traded it in on a Magnavox MPD720 picture is better and has all the same accessories and functions as the Polaroid and then some, cost is a little more ($239.00) but you probably get what you pay for.

Summary: purch 12/03, broken lid 02/04; replacement MUCH BETTER
Review: Overall, this has a positive result so please read the whole thing before you form an opinion.

My husband bought this for me as a Christmas gift in December 2003. At the end of February, the top left side hinge (as the unit faces you) had a problem. It was more the screws inside that hold the plastic that goes around the LCD screen to the top side plastic casing. Right where the two are held together inside, the screws came undone/fell out/whatever from the plastic tab where they hold things together. What's worse is that the screws that came loose (there were at least two) started to "roll around" inside the unit.

My husband took it back to our local Best Buy, where he originally bought it, and the girl at the counter took one look at it and gave him this look like "You broke it, why are you trying to return it?" so needless to say he wasn't happy. Finally, he got a manager to look at it. We have been OVERLY CAREFUL with this thing since day one... I think we probably used it about 20 times because we've been busy with work, etc. We also have always had it in a nice padded case...

The manager at Best Buy took a look at it and said "Oh yeah, that one... Just replace it. It's marked DEVO anyway." Now I don't know what DEVO means, but it didn't sound too good.

Also to note: the replacement that we received was new, off the truck that day, and was much THICKER than the one we originally bought in December. It is built heavier, the door for the DVD's closes much better and stays shut well, and the LCD screen top doesn't "flop around" so much. Perhaps they've fixed some issues with this unit since last year, but I don't feel very confident that we're going to have a positive experience here given the response of the kid at Best Buy. For right now, I'm satisfied that this unit is at least WAY BETTER than the version of this model # that we received in December. IT IS THE SAME EXACT MODEL NUMBER JUST MUCH THICKER BODY AND BETTER BUILD QUALITY.

One thing is for sure though... Those people who said the picture quality stinks DID NOT READ THE MANUAL!!! The unit ships set at LOW video quality. You have to go through set up by making about three button pushes on the remote to correct this. DUH! And I'm a woman who isn't even that techy!

DID I MENTION THAT THE NEW REPLACEMENT UNIT THAT IS THICKER AND BUILT HEAVIER SEEMS LOUDER? Which was a major complaint last year with this unit...

Overall, though, my parents bought a cheapie Apex unit for $134 from Wal-Mart that has less picture quality and lower volume speakers but it takes a beating and keeps on going. It was a dark gray color- almost black- and was almost exactly the size of a portable CD player.

Choose your battles in price vs. quality if you are wanting something for the kids in the mini-van. Your best bet may be a REALLY CHEAP unit from Wal-Mart with some headphones and a headphone splitter for the kids. When you're in a dark minivan, the screen brightness isn't a huge deal. Our Polaroid is WAY bright unless you go in and change the settings. The cheapie Apex that my parents have works just fine. Plus it's fallen out of the case in the car and has been bumped around and keeps going strong. Would I have the same performance from this little Polaroid (which is supposedly made by Panasonic by the way)? I think not.

For my child to watch in the cars, I'd rather have the inexpensive one with less screen brightness but more durability. I don't like worrying about my daughter knocking over our unit in the van. For myself though, I like the screen brightness and other features of the Polaroid or another similar unit. I just hope that this replacement unit is more durable. I think we probably would've been satisfied with the Wal-Mart one if we had just listened to OUR parents. :-)

Summary: excellent picture, very good sound
Review: Polaroid's portable DVD player PDV-0700 is a sharp looking, lightweight answer for trips in the car or long waits in an office. It has a very crisp picture, even when the picture is very dark. Many players can't handle this and the screen blacks out, but this player still shows all details.

The machine comes with Dolby speakers which sound good, but a little weak. When you plug in a set of headphones, however, the sound in them is great. The player will handle just about any format, from DVD to VCD to MP3 to CD-RW. It comes with a rechargeable battery which connects to the bottom of the machine. This powers the player for about 4 hours of constant playing. Of course, this player can also be used as the main DVD player in a house, with inputs to a TV and sound system. The remote is small and thin, and handles most features, but you have to go through a few hoops to do some things, like choose a chapter in a movie.

The only minor complaints I have about this machine are that the picture is not as good as some of the better machines I have seen, and the speakers could be a little better. However, these other machines also cost much more than the 300 dollars you would invest in this one. For the money, you won't do much better.

Summary: three hand portable dvd
Review: The is a good little unit if you have three hands, two to do normal everyday things and one to keep the cover down on the disc, this is what I have to do with mine to get it to play, or tape the cover down, the clasp won't keep it tight enough. Also, attaching the battery is a bit tricky, and the sound is not very good, even with headphones, but the picture is good. It should also be able to charge the battery while removed from the unit and it should also be able to charge from the dc cigarette lighter adaptor.

Summary: Are 7 inches better than 5
Review: The PDV-0700 player was not my first choice. I purchased a Dynex 5" player on sale at Best Buy after reading the positive reviews posted here. I was very satisfied with every thing about it except the 5" screen. It was just too small for my old eyes!

The units are similar, but there are a few differences.
1. The PDV-0700 is sleeker and just looks better.
2. It lacks a second headphone jack but a splitter
is included.
3. The Dynex battery could be left attached
without danger of being overcharged.
4. I would seriously suggest you purchase a good pair of
head phones like the Sennheiser PX-100's if you buy this
player as the maximum volume level is very low.

My only complaint is that an image in normal mode is not 7" large. There is a black band all around the image. In mode 2 the image is horizontally stretched and images appear wider than they actually are. The black bands are at the top and bottom of the screen. And mode 3 fills the screen but cuts off a bit of the top and bottom of the image. Maybe this is just typical of TTF and LCD screens.

All in all, I'm pleased with my purchase. It performs as advertised and has been trouble free so far.
