Rating: Summary: This is the one Review: I bought this Magnavox about six months ago, after lusting for a portable dvd player for two years, and after trying a Cyberhome which failed half the time. The M'vox has been in almost constant use, including recently by a 3-year old hooked on Dora the Explorer, and is extremely reliable and strong. Mine goes for over 3 hours on the battery. I have no complaints, only praise. It's everything I hoped it would be. What a great toy for a movie junkie.
Rating: Summary: PLAIN PERFECT Review: I bought this mainly for my 18 month old son who loves to watch Elmo DVD movies. After doing an extensive research on brand, price, accessories and comments, I decided to go with this DVD Player. NO COMPLAINTS HERE...I always go for branded names - since these companies work hard to get to where they are right now. I am very hard to please but this DVD Player pleases my son and I BIG TIME...
Rating: Summary: Good for the price Review: I did lot of research in these protable dvd players and found that this Magnavox DVD Player suites my needs. Screen Quality : GOOD, SOUND : GOOD, Formats : All Most all formats with region free (plays PAL and NTSC) DVD, VCD, MP3, Audio CD etc, Battery Life: OK (But Remember you need to hook-up an external battery which increases your over all size which is not shown in any pictures).
This unit makes a little bit of noise when reading the disk (not all times, I guess when its initially loading and when its unable to read a sector on the disk).
Over all its a good DVD Player, good screen quality compared to most others.
Rating: Summary: A fantastic little wonder!!! Review: I had been researching portable dvd players because I knew I would be wanting one to keep me occupied on those long trips. I looked at the electronic stores to see the new models and demostrated quite a few. I had almost given up when I went into my local Wal-Mart and found this player on the shelf for a price of 238.00. I brought the player home and for some reason the player I got the battery would not charge. It must of been a defective battery. I returned it and was hesitant about getting the same player but boy am I glad I did. This is a great portable dvd player. The picture is fantastic!! Even the sound is very good but hook up a pair of headphones and the sound is amazing!! Anyone looking for a portable dvd player make sure you take a look at this model and you will not be disappointed!!
Rating: Summary: Mintek player with a name change Review: I have compared the 8-inch Magnavox with the 7-inch 1770 model from Mintek and they are very similar. The switches and jacks are all in the same places, and the battery configuration is identical. The power switch is exactly the same. I suspect that Magnavox got their players from Mintek, then put their more recognizable name on them. Since Mintek is a very small company with no track record, you might want to check out their reviews before you buy this player. I've had the Magnavox for 2 weeks, and the Mintek for 2 months, and so far they both work fine. But when you buy a big name brand, you expect that it is more reliable than the unknown maker. In this case, I don't think that assumption is justified. That's the only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5.
Rating: Summary: Nice player, but it's just a Mintek. Review: I have the MPD720 and the Mintek 1770 side by side and they are sourced from the same manufacturer (as another reviewer noted). The software is identical (uses same IR remote codes) and the lithium ion batteries are identically rated (mAh). Build quality is also equivalent. This unit does NOT have s-video support as listed, so beware! (the 1770 does). The Magnavox only comes with a 90 day parts/labor warranty; the Mintek 1770 has a 90 day labor, 1 year parts warranty. Save yourself the Magnavox $ premium and get the Mintek.
Rating: Summary: Bomb shizel my nizel. Review: I just bought this player from Wal-Mart, and thus far, have no complaints. My mother, right now, has pnemonia, and is in the hospital. She calls me and tells me she is very bored, and so I decided I would let her be the first to use the player. We hooked up the battery, and started charging it, and decided to give the player a test run while it was plugged in. We watched 2 movies on it. (keep in mind this was not drawing from the battery, but rather from the hospital's power) Sleepy Hollow, and Pirates of the Caribbean. And I have one word which does not do this player justice: BEAUTIFUL. The picture was amazing, my mom's friend, who was sitting at the other side of the room, said he had no problems seeing the screen. I thought the picture was very crisp. The built-in speakers are good for one or two people in a car, maybe, and I certainly could hear it fine as it was sitting in front of me, but to entertain a large group, you would want to hook the player up to larger speakers.
Some people say the case it comes with is small, and I could see how they may think that, but my sick mother, had no problem packing the DVD player in, along with all of it's equipment. (And she's 'technologically impaired'!) But, for the bottom line, I will list the pros and cons I have found on this DVD player.
Pros: Excellent picture quality
optical zoom-play
comes with car adapter, carrying case, and highly responsive RC
Dual headphone jacks
Long-lasting battery
Cons (of what I have found thus far):
The buttons are slightly difficult to press on the actual player itself
Built-in speakers were louder in Pirates than on Sleepy Hollow
And I found the battery just SLIGHTLY difficult to attach, but that might just be me. As you can see, I've only found minor problems, and I would highly reccomend this DVD player for road trips, or even if you're just stuck somewhere for a few hours/days!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful little player Review: I researched and researched portable DVD players prior to going on a 6 week long driving trip to the midwest from my home in the northeast. I ended up deciding on this one, and boy, am I happy I did.
The initial car ride was a 17 hour drive from NH to IL. The player started getting used halfway through the first day, and saved my sanity (I have 2 1/2 year old twins...)I never once had any problems with it in the car, and even my tech-shy mom, riding with me, could figure out how to work the machine.
Once in IL, I also made separate drives to both my in-laws' houses - 3 hour and 9 hour drives, respectively. The player, again, worked beautifully. Not one skip, not one overheat, nothing.
My parents also do not have a DVD player at their house, so we used it a lot out of the car and on their TV. It's easy to hook up. The quality is probably not what we have here at home - my husband is a tech junkie and we have pretty high-end home equipment - but it was certainly quite good.
Just got home this past week, using the player again in the car the whole way back home, and again, not one single issue.
I'll admit that I haven't used the battery very much at all - we plugged into the power for both car and home use, but I was able to watch one full movie on the battery at some point, so it's got at least that much juice.
Just a couple of small things to be aware of - the case that is included doesn't have much in the way of support if you are trying to hang the player between the front two seats in a van, in order for second row bucket seats to both be able to see it. We rigged the two hanging straps together and supported the player a little bit more by resting a purse on a cooler underneath it. Also, there doesn't seem to be a way to add an extra screen later.
It's loaded with some fun extras like DTS and surround sound capability, if you can hook up to a receiver that handles that kind of sound. The internal speakers were loud enough for us, though it did seem to vary a bit with different movies.
All in all, a wonderful purchase that I'm SO glad that I made!
Rating: Summary: Nearly Perfect Player Review: In my opinion, this Player (MPD 720) is the very best Portable DVD Player on the market. The 7" screen is crystal clear and can be viewed very comfortably from 5 feet away. The speakers although lacking bass, are the best quality for any 7" player. If you arent satisfied with the speakers buy some portable ones at radio shack for $10-$20 and you'll have more sound than you need for a car, train or airplane ride. The unit seems to be very durable and it has never freezed or skipped while I have used it. It is extremely portable and user friendly. Since it comes with a battery, remote, car adapter and carrying case it is the best deal out there at $275.00. The case is awesome, it easily attatches to a car seat, has room for your unit, battery, charger, adapter wires, remote, headphones (not included) and 5-10 DVD's in sleeves. The case fits all that and still only weighs about 4lbs and is only 12" by 12". A flawless design by magnavox. With a product this perfect you have to look hard for flaws and I found 3. 1)The LCD screen has more resistence than you'd think to open it(not a big deal). 2)The buttons on the unit can't be tapped to work, you have to push down and hold them for a second. 3)When the unit is first loading/stopping a DVD it run's kind of loud but soon disappears once the movie starts. Other than that this unit is perfect. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Rating: Summary: A Perfect Player Review: Like many others here, I bought mine at Wal-Mart, but not on impulse. It is a fantastic player, and I highly recommend it. The screen is bright and crisp and clear. The viewing angle is very nice. The included remote is easy to use, but should be backlit. The included bag from the Wal-Mart wasn't very useful, but the included A/V cables and car DC cable add much value to the package.
I thought it was hard to find a unit with a nice 16:9 screen, but this one seems to do it all.
I have just two negative comments on this device, and they apply to a lot of other machines, too. It has no video input, so you can only use it with the built-in player. Second, there is no good way to stop watching a movie in the middle. Like most home players, press stop once, then play to resume, or stop twice to cancel your stopping point. But as soon as you power off the machine, which you need to do to save battery, it forgets your position. Hard for jumping between airplanes.
