Summary: Keep in mind: Wes Cravens first film!
Review: Last House on the Left is an exploitation film based on true events with shaky camera handling, unreliable acting, poor sound, and a lot of poor "in your face" psychological violence. This is Wes Cravens debut film, and you can certainly recognize that this his first appearance as a director due to all the errors. The film depicts two girls who are going to see a concert and on the way want to score some pot to enhance the evenings pleasures. However, everything goes wrong from this point forward and they end up in a brutal environment of torture, rape, and worse. Two things you can take from this film include that you should take a self-defense course and beware of strangers. Otherwise, this is a horrid film experience.

Summary: This is truly dreadful - avoid at all cost
Review: Please stay away from this shocking turkey of a movie. To put it simply it is just HIDEOUS. It's about as scary as opening a MARS BAR ! 'I spit on your grave' is another film typical of the genre, it is only marginally better that this dismally poor effort. Wes Craven went on to direct the equally laughable 'Shocker' which is absolutely hilarious in another tragically sad way ! you have been warned......

Summary: Gruesome with a Twist
Review: The story is about a couple of girls Lucy Grantheim and Sandra Cassel on their way to a concert but stop to buy some drugs. The drug dealers are sex murders and they beat and rape one of the girls and then set out for Canada. On the way, the car breaks down and with a weird twist they wind up at one of the girls parents house - the "revenge" begins.

The movie is extremely gruesome.

One of the makers of the movies is Cunningham, who went on to make Friday the 13th.

Summary: Didn't do much for me.
Review: After reading all the hype, I felt incredibly let down. Perhaps living in the early 21st century with terrorists who kill thousands with their cowardly attacks on civilians buildings has blunted my sensitivities and hundred of hours of watching various zombies, euro-demons and power tool wielding revenants has dulled my sense, but I found this movie to be somewhat tame. Sure, the vile murders in this film were the kind of evil that deserves to be eradicated and we occassionally wandered into cruelty and depravity, the whole undertone of the film kept being neutered by a comic relief sheriff duo.
I'm sure that this was really disturbing back in the 70's, but I felt the movie hasn't aged well. It is definitely worth watching as historical reference, but I can't say that it was really even disturbing. If this caused folk to flee the theaters throwing-up, I wonder what Hellrazor or Evil Dead would have done if we could have shown it to those audiences.

Summary: One of the most distrubing films i've ever seen.
Review: I rented this one two nights ago cause i've heard about this one for a while, i am a major horror fan. This is known as Wes Craven's infamous debut film and by god, this is one of the most disturbing films i've ever had the pleasure to watch.

This is about two girls who get kidnapped from a rock concert by a gang of thugs, get raped and murdered by them. Now the parents of the two girls discover their deaths they vow revenge. A Totally sickening and unpleasant movie that lies between the line of art and trash but this is truly not for all tastes. This is definitely goes beyond the lines of " I Spit on Your Grave" or " Maniac".

Also recommended: The Evil Dead, I Spit on your Grave, Maniac, The Toxic Avenger, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Candyman, Urban Legend, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Suspiria.

Summary: The Most Powerful Horror Movie Ever
Review: Wow. That is all I can say after watching Wes Craven's first and best film. Very disturbing and powerful, Last House on the Left gets it's message across and doesn't pull any punches in doing so. The most powerful scene in this movie, and perhaps any movie, is after the murderous four kills one of the hostages and watches the other one walk into a pond in shock. They shoot her and both hostages are dead. What is so powerful about this scene is that if you look in the killer's faces you don't see pride and hapiness that they just killed the hostages, but instead you can sense that they know what they are doing is wrong and that they are human, but they just can't take back what they did now.
What is so great about LHOTL is that it doesn't treat violence as a thing of entertainment on movies, but instead it treats it like voilence is in real life. It is raw in-your-face documentery style that you can't turn away from. It also shows that real villians are more human than movies make them out to be. And it has another message, that the parents of the dispatched daughter seek vengence of the killers, and after they knock off the killers that stay at there house, they find that their revenge is still no better than killing in the first place.
The DVD is also great. It is uncut, only the DVD so don't get the heavily censored VHS version or you will end up kicking yourself( I know that first hand ). The DVD also has funny and entertaining commentary by Wes Craven and Sean S. Cunningham. It has a making of LHOTL that is a must for fans( man, Fred Lincoln has gained some weight! ). It has some outtakes, but they have no sound so it is kind of lame. A good introduction before the movie by director Wes Craven, Theatrical trailer, and Forbidden footage which is good.
This DVD is a great buy, especially reccommended for horror fans.

4 out of 4 stars.

Summary: Bad, terrible, boring...
Review: I just got through watching this movie five minutes ago. I didn't have high hopes for it, but I had no idea it would be quite as bad as this. Mostly I wanted to see Craven's first film because I thought his second one ("The Hills Have Eyes") was pretty good for a horror film (and for the low budget they obviously had).

I am sure the version of this movie I saw was censored (the MGM edition was all I could find), but more gore and violence couldn't ultimately make this movie more suspenseful or scary or BETTER as a horror movie in general. In other words, I cant say I have much desire to seek out the uncut version, much less pay for it or even waste another hour and a half of my time watching it. Hell, the only part of this movie I halfway enjoyed was the stupid cops which was totally out of place to begin with but was actually entertaining for one or two minutes. Also the music used in the movie did not make a lot of sense. You have two women being raped in the woods by escaped convicts and they're playing calm hippy music in the background. Im not against trying something new and experimenting, but this just ruined the effect I think Craven was trying to produce in these parts, namely shock and disgust. Instead the music was largely distracting and tampered down something you could make even more effective with the right music.

I want to say that this movie is *NOT* disturbing (at least to me) and if that is why you are curious about seeing it (as I was) don't waste your time, ... I see good reviews on here, Christ...did we see the same movie??? I saw the MGM version, that's what everyone else here is reviewing, unless they have seen some extremely uncut version where its almost a different movie I don't understand giving this film a second thought.

Summary: Outstanding
Review: Finally it comes to dvd. "Last House On the Left," Wes Craven's directorial debut, is raw, powerful, emotional and absorbing. The infamous film gained quite a cult following since it's release in the 1970's and is still admired by fans of the genre today. The film is a violent journey into murder, rape, torture and humiliation like few other films have captured before. The movie has such a raw realism to it that it's hard not to wince at certain scenes, even for horror vets like myself. Make no mistake, if you are easily offended or are against violence in films than this is not your cup of tea.

The movie is about Mari and her friend Phyllis going to a rock concert in a bad part of town. They try to score some grass and end up getting kidnapped by a band of fugitives freshly escaped from prison. And the movie goes from there. (I don't want to spoil anything for those of you who haven't seen it)

The movie is expertly filmed and the acting is very strong. Really creating the realism that Wes was shooting for. The soundtrack is laugh out loud great really bringing to life the time period that this movie took place in. David Hess does a fantastic job as usual playing the leader of a band of psychos. (For another great gem with Hess, check out "House on the Edge of the Park") The film is a very powerful and raw look into the horrors that real life can bring. It's disturbing and downright mean. Pure Genious and a masterpiece of American film making.

The dvd looks about as good as a movie from 1970 can. There are some issues with the picture, but it's acceptable for the time period. The audio could be better. Included in the extras are a commentary track with Wes and some documentaries. I haven't had the chance to watch them yet, but they sound very good.

This one is for Horror/Terror film fans only. If you're not a huge fan of horror you probably won't like this film. But for all of us out there who love these movies, we are in for a treat. Pick this one up today and witness one of the best and most controversial horror movies of all time!

Summary: A very upsetting movie
Review: This is a tough movie to review. It made me very emotional seeing the suffering and torture that those poor teenage girls went through. It seemed so real the way they were being humiliated and the enjoyment that the killers took in it.It's not a movie that I would be interested in seeing multiple times.I thought the acting was very good for such a low budget film.It was gruesume the revenge that the parents took out on the killers.I felt it was very deserved, though, and felt zero sympathy for them.I totally could understand why the parents lost there minds when they found out what happened to their poor daughter.I know some say that what the parents did make them just as bad as the killers but I don't agree.Killing innocent children was way worse to me.I also know that the comedy scenes bugged some but I feel it was necessary to get a break from the violence for a while.I would recommend this movie but it is tough to watch and not the type for people who are upset by watching violence.

Summary: Last house on the ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Review: let's get strait to the point, this movie [stinks]! There is nothing scary about this movie, not disturbing, not even cool, it reeks with stupidity and Wes trying to cause controversy. The only "painful" scene is were a guy gets his special friend bit off. That's it! This film diserves to be burnt, and it owes me a star!
