Summary: THE Best Haunted-House Film Ever!!
Review: The original 1963 "The Haunting" is a masterpiece of suspense. The opening narration, when we learn of the evil history of Hill House, sets the tone for the whole picture ["It's a house that was BORN bad!"]. It's nearly impossible NOT to get the shivers when listening to the opening act of the film!

We don't see any floating spirits, and we don't get to see sixteen teenagers chopped into mince meat either. And that's the beauty of it! Our imaginations are brought to the forefront throughout this whole movie.

Excellent black-and-white photography and some chilling music add to the eerie proceedings, plus some fine acting is on tap as well!

Sidestep the 1999 remake, and stick to the original 1963 film. No better haunted-house horror movie has ever been produced!

If you've never seen this one before, get it post-haste! And be prepared for that whopper of a beginning!

Summary: The Haunting (1963) Is Unsurpassed in Ghost Stories!
Review: Of all the films ever made about ghosts and haunted houses, The Haunting directed by Robert Wise (1963)is unsurpassed and I recommend this film highly. I'd be the first in line to buy this film on dvd! I can't get enough of this beautifully directed classic and I can't say enough great things about this wonderful film.

Summary: Best horror film ever!
Review: The original version (1963) of "The Haunting" is the best horror film ever! It doesn't use gore and blood like new movies, but use the feelings, and moods that people have, that makes this a classic film!
What's so scary about something just popping out at you? It's old. How about feeling the nervousness, the tension, the terror that the people are going through? With this version of the Haunting, you'll get all that, plus more!
A must see! So many are scared of it, young, and old. I have watched it several times, and it's still scary!
Remember, this is the 1963 version of "The Haunting". It is far better than the newer version.
You can buy it now on VHS, or sign up for the DVD release.

Summary: "THE HAUNTING" A TRUE LEGACY OF HORROR
Review: ALTHOUGH THIS MOVIE IS NOT YET AVAILABLE ON DVD, IT NEEDS TO BE. THIS IS THE ULTIMATE IN HAUNTED HOUSE MOVIES. IT HAS ALL THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS; CAST, MOOD, ATMOSPHERE, AND THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF FEAR. THIS MOVIE SET THE STANDARD FOR FUTURE HAUNTED ABODE MOVIES ("THE SHINING", ETC.) AND PROVES THE ADAGE THAT LESS IS MORE.

Summary: Classic Gothic Horror.
Review: Every time I saw this movie on TV as a youg boy I ended up having to sleep in my parents room. When, a few years ago, I decided to view it again ( I thought it would be amusing to show my wife the movie that so terrified me as a boy) I rented it from the video store and figured the old movie would be good for a few laughs. After all, I'm a grown man now. I mean,I used to think "The Crawling Eye" was scary! But I must honestly say that The Haunting was every bit as terrifying as I remembered it. My wife was equally impressed. Now I own the video and no matter how often I see it it is never any less spooky. I maintain that The Haunting is the single scariest ghost movie ever made (the remake is a joke). It is the classic gothic ghost story.

Summary: Not bad, but not scary
Review: I hate to sound like a philistine by going against what would appear to be the overriding opinion. I certainly don't think a horror film needs blood and gore to work, and I didn't love the remake, which hammers you over the head with CGI. However, some spooky noises and jarring camera angles aren't enough to creep me out, especially when I know no ghosts are going to show, because that's the aspect of the movie everybody keeps trumpeting! I didn't need to see anything, but it would have worked better if a more palpable aura of foreboding had been established. The characters ascribe personality traits to the house, and talk about how evil it is, only I'm not made to feel whatever it is they say they're feeling, and how bad can it be when they could all get in a car and leave? It doesn't help that the Julie Harris character is so squirrelly and unlikable that I can't feel sympathy for her. Perhaps "The Haunting" was more frightening when it came out, but hey, even "Alien" isn't as effective as it once was. I might have even given three stars, but far too many people seem to think this movie is greater than it is. Maybe I'll try reading the book.

Summary: Scares away the lousy remake.
Review: The original motion picture version of The Haunting is much closer to the classic short story by Shirley Jackson. An excellent, and very scary, film. As the best films have always proved, no blood or guts were necessary to give you a good fright. Buy it.

Summary: THE GREATEST GHOST MOVIE EVER MADE
Review: They don't make 'em like this anymore! This movie is the movie to judge all other ghost movies by. No one has ever done it better..I can't believe Hollywood was lame enough to even attempt a remake in 1999...How sad.
You never see the ghost in this movie, but you FEEL the terror & the suspense. It's beautifully filmed and keeps you on the edge of your seat once the action starts.
If you are the kind of person who thinks a movie is great because of the special effects, you'll hate this movie. But if you still have a thing called "imagination", this movie will have you imagining that they are coming to get you! You'll sleep with the lights ON (if youcan sleep at all, after watching this gem).
Wish I could give it 10 stars....Hey, maybe I will:

Summary: Quite simply the best ghost/horror movie ever
Review: Forget special effects, blood and gore, and other so-called "scary" devices that are used ad nauseum these days. The Haunting is absolutely the most chilling film ever made, and uses none of these (actually, there is a very modest use of special effects a time or two). The central character, Eleanor, is enticed to join a group of psychic researchers at Hill House, where her mind is subtly taken over by the spirits in the home. This movie is as good as anything Hitchcock ever did. CAUTION: The recent remake with Liam Neeson is not horror; it's just horrible. Watch the original.

Summary: Only the Original Will Do
Review: This movie, superbly acted by the cast, never shows you a single special effect and yet you are truly frightened. Filmed when people used their imaginations rather than blood and guts to scare you, the black and white photography only adds to the effect. See this at night, in the dark, with a friend.
