Rating: Summary: Modern Gothic at its very best Review: Possibly the best horror movie ever made, Rosemary's Baby still holds its spell even after 30 years. Polanski's razor sharp direction and ultra-faithful screenplay comes hand in hand with Ira Levin's magnificent Gothic novel and Mia's vulnerability and surprising scenic domain (as well as Ruth Gordon's scenery chewing, bombastic performance)make this a real film gem. Haunting from the word GO!, it is also a grand view of manners in the 60s, and it is an excellent showcase for the talents of Farrow and Cassavetes. A masterpiece!
Rating: Summary: putting the lurid pieces together, some of them yellow Review: I venture that this story is neither a horror nor a thriller in the general sense--though there is some of both--but has the quality of a crossword puzzle, or an anagram that can at first be solved simply, but once more closely examined yields disquieting combinations. This kind of pace is not for everyone, neither is the tone, but doesn't everyone have those moments when left alone with suspicions and an active mind, he or she can "conjure up the living devil?" The direction, the acting, the settings, are fitted tightly. The screenplay successfully keeps true to the lurid paperback. This is a fabulous story.
Rating: Summary: This movie Rocks! Review: The perfect horror film for late night addicts! Really suspenseful and scary. I love Mia Farrow. If only she hadn't cut her hair!!! A must see!
Rating: Summary: Not the least bit scary or suspenseful Review: I just finished reading the book "Rosemary's Baby" and thought it was a decent read until the lame ending. I was looking forward to seeing the movie, which has been hailed as a classic, and found it quite flawed. Sure, the acting is good (although an Oscar for Ruth Gordon's performance seems a bit much), the direction is fine, etc. but the movie is totally not scary. It's not even particularly suspenseful, considering it's billed as a "psychological thriller." The first third, which develops character and plot, really drags. The Woodhouses move in to the new apartment, they meet the neighbors, they have dinner with the neighbors, they make fun of the neighbors, they have sex, blah blah blah. Get to the point already!!! The middle third is OK but not great, and the ending is as anticlimactic as the book's. Sorry, but senior citizens standing around yelling "Hail Satan!" is hilarious, not scary. Take my advice. For real, genuine creepy film scares, stick with the best, e.g. The Shining, Halloween, The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc. "Rosemary's Baby" is just too timid to be anything but mildly entertaining. Rather disappointing, considering how acclaimed this movie supposedly is.
Rating: Summary: PLEASE DO A DVD AND FAST!!! Review: This is one of the greatest horror films EVER. This one makes nearly every list when one is done but obviously would not appeal to certain people who need a slasher type story and action to be able to keep seated. Over 30 years later and this is awesome. One problem. As with other classic films the video does a great disservice, with dull and dark picture and obvious screen being chopped at the sides. Note to Paramount. Please do a DVD with cleaned up picture and with some of the very notable facts about this film included as one of the DVD features. Although a great film I will wait till I buy it until DVD!!!
Rating: Summary: Great scenario, great cast, great storie, great director... Review: This is the best thriller film I had watched. Amazing history, fantastic cast. Polanski is a genius and proved it. Dakota Building is a great scenario. The Rosemary's Baby just is the best...
Rating: Summary: DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLERS EVER!!! Review: Although many would include this movie in the horror category, I would say it is more like a thriller sprinkled by actual and everyday events that could be a real story. I have seen it at least 70 times and up to this day I am still surprised by its great plot and so much talent delivered by the cast. Two thumbs up for Ruth Gordon!
Rating: Summary: this movie proves... Review: ...that the movie viewer's imagination is much more effective and frightening than any multi-million dollar computer-generated special effect.
Rating: Summary: This is my absolute favorite movie! Review: After I finished watching this movie, I rewound it and watched it again. The movie, all though long (134 mins.), kept my attention the entire time. The casting is perfect. Mia Farrow was excellent as the naive Rosemary. For anyone who loves horror movies, but doesn't need to see people being hacked up in every scene, this movie is for you. This classic immediately became my favorite movie of all time. I liked it so much I bought my own copy! I've seen it, and I'm not kidding, at least 50 times!
Rating: Summary: what a horror film should be Review: This is one of my favorite films. Aside from its success as a film, how can you beat all the awesome '60s style (pulled off beautifully by Mia Farrow)? Just a superb combination of visuals and music. Utterly convincing. For anyone who liked this, I recommend "Jacob's Ladder" and "Silence of the Lambs". And for Ruth Gordon fans, "Harold and Maude"--the best love story!
