Summary: Krull is Cool
Review: I remember seeing this at the movies when I was a teen, and have waited for its DVD apperence.

This is a good film to get. It's a great blend of sci-fi/fantasy with a good old medieval style tale of adventure against "the beast".

(trivia)
This one features commentary from the director, plus the stars Ken Marshall, & Lysette Anthony. I must say Ken Marshall certainly changed over the years... for Star Trek fans, he was the re-occuring character "Eddington" on Deep Space 9 (though in this film he hasn't lost his hair).

Review: The adventure never stops when a soon-to-be king races off to rescue his soon-to-be queen from an invading alien race. Its a movie that has captured me with its action and heart-felt moments. If you like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, you'll enjoy this movie.

Summary: If you like Lord of the Rings, see this!!!
Review: If you like lord of the rings see this film!! As a child of the Dungeons and Dragons era, I found this film fascinating. In all honesty this film combines the Middle earth/D and D genre with a hybrid form story of Star Wars..

It follows the good vs evil concept, love vs hate, and a quest for an object, the glaive. Of course, this film had the potential to be great, I would not classify it as a "classic" , Many sci/fi fantasy freaks would enjoy it for the D and D / Lord of the rings type of film. More emphasis should have been paid to the " Glaive". As was mentioned in the film, the glaive was supposed to be weapon of enourmous power, however it was not used enough. Secondly, the quest to obtain the glaive was far too easy, perhaps a creature in the mountain to guard the glaive and to battle the prince...

The use of magic is quite evident in the film including shape shifting and changing into animals,,. Of course if you see the film, the slayers will immediatley lead you to think of the star wars stormtroopers and their lazer rifles...

Once again those of you who are in the sci/fi/fantasy genre who are into the lord of the rings will most certainly enjoy this film, now with the new enhancements on DVD, this film is most definatley worthy of 3 and half stars from a pure movie point of view....

Summary: KRULL
Review: Essentially a good damsel in distress movie. While Freddie Jones, Alun Armstrong, Lysette Anthony, Francesca Annis & Liam Neeson (possibly in his first role!) are recognizable, you probably won't recognize the others. Although you might recognize Ken Marshall from his roles in Star Trek Deep Space Nine.

The Plot: On the planet Krull, Prince Colwyn is coming to meet his bride Princess Lyssa. Their union will unite their two families who are feuding. But before the wedding can end, The Beast's drone-like emissaries crash the ceremony, kill everyone and snatch Lyssa.
The Beast is the loathsome tyrant of Krull.

In the wreckage that once was Lyssa's father's castle, everyone is lying dead (except Colwyn) a mysterious figure enters, he is Ynyr (Freddie Jones). He tends to Colwyn's wounds and when he awakens Ynyr tells him what happened, Colwyn is heartbroken at losing his father, and would seemingly wallow in self-pity. Ynyr is disgusted "I came to meet a king, instead I find a boy" he turns to leave. But Colwyn calls after him "Lyssa?".
Ynyr explains that she has been taken to the Beast's castle, which disappears and reappears in a new location every day. There is really no telling where it is. But first they must retrieve the enigmatic "glaive" a weapon that Colwyn thought was just a myth.

The journey to get the glaive, may make people scoff, it looks so simple! Or maybe Colwyn just makes is look easy, he can appparently skillfully scale dramatic cliffs, clad in only his tight fitting prince outfit. Impressive! But the music during this section is really stunning (I wish there were a soundtrack available) It was composed by the legendary James Horner.

After getting the glaive, the two begin their uncertain journey. They are first seeking to consult a wise man, who's an old friend of Ynyr's, to find where exactly the Beast's castle is. On the way they join up with an assortment of characters. First a humorous magician. Then a band of escaped convicts, that first mean to rob Colwyn. The blind wise-man and his young boy assistant. Finally an very tall Cyclops-like figure, who has been following them from the beginning. His people were promised by the Beast that if they sacrificed an eye, they would be allowed to view the future, but now the only future they can see is the day of their death.

Meanwhile back at the Beast's castle, Lyssa is being menaced by the Beast. He can take any attractive form he wants. but Lyssa can help but notice aside from being a heartless brute, he's also repulsively hideous. He wants to make her his queen. And she spends her time avoiding him, trying to find a way out, and praying for Colwyn to hurry up.

During the last legs of their journey. Ynyr meets with his old bride. Now known as the Widow of the web (a beautiful Francesca Annis) She is condemned to live in the hub of a huge web, guarded by a like-wise enormous spider. In really a touching moment, Ynyr is able to make peace with his past.

Despite some problems, it REALLY IS an interesting film. (that is deserving of more than 2 stars, seesh!) It has a pretty good script, that isn't dry, with some witty lines. The characters are casted well. Everyone is likeable and believable. The Italian filmed locations are gorgeous, and the music is lovely. Deserves 41/2 stars at least.
I wouldn't judge it as "campy" although I think the cover art could've been better, but I guess "never judge a movie by it's cover" :-)

Summary: Pure camp
Review: In the great group of early 80s science fiction and fantasy quest stories comes Krull.

Combining Dungeons and Dragons characters and magic with Star Wars-esque space age villains, Krull is the story of a world in danger and the prince who is chosen to save it. The story is extremely archetypical, but Krull succeeds beyond its limiting plot due to classic effects and fun characters.

Overall, not the sort of film to ever win large-scale awards, but a great rental.

Summary: Great Score
Review: If you are a James Horner fan, this movie is worth watching just to see how masterfully James Horner composes music for each scene. James Horner does it so well that its like a ballet. The music perfectly fits the action going on. Also the movie has the actor Freddie Jones giving a fine performance as Ynyr. He delivers lines very eloquently. The scenery in this movie is very beautiful. There's one part where the characters are riding flying horses. In that scene Liam Neeson has a great look on his face. He looks like he's having a great time.

Summary: A Sci-Fi movie that does'nt follow its own rules
Review: First we see the evil villian's fortress flying through space, then we see it beaming itself all over this alien(?) world where the story takes place. People fighting armored, blaster-wielding soldiers with swords. A 20 foot tall monster that gets seriously wounded with something akin to a pen knife. Top it all off with some some bad acting and lackluster characters and you wind up with "Krull".

Its one of those films that is "almost good", if only the producers put a little more work into the movie and less into product placement and merchandising strategies. This movie also goes in 4 directions at the same time and all the paths lead nowhere. Its a classic example of creating a movie that was supposed to please everyone but has the opposite effect.

Summary: How Much Stuff Can We Rip On?
Review: ... KRULL isn't a terrible movie (believe me, there are a lot of worse films out there, even in the sci-fi field... However, nor is it that good of a movie either. The premise of the film is interesting: evil dark lord kidnaps newly married queen and her presumed dead king seeks to find her. Well, that's not interesting, the interesting part is that the dark lord's castle keeps moving to a different location on the planet of Krull every 24hrs and only one or two people know where its going to show up next.

The problem with KRULL is that it doesn't really know what kind of film it is (is it sci-fi or fantasy?; is it supposed to be cheesy or is it supposed to be a serious film that just turned out cheesy; etc.). The film has a personality disorder that just can't be solved.

Anyway, the best part of KRULL is watching it to see how many different films and classic stories it rips on....KRULL has scenes and elements taken from everything from STAR WARS to E.T. to LORD OF THE RINGS to THE ODYSSEY...Besides that, the film has appearances of Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltrane and was directed by Peter Yates.

Overall, a movie to watch on a rainy afternoon if you have nothing better to do. Oh, go ahead and laugh. It'll do you good.

Summary: Good blend of sci-fi and fantasy, but not a classic.
Review: This is the only vidoe I've ever bought (not that I have tons of movies) that I'd never seen before. And I like it, but I would've been better off just renting it first to see if I liked it. But it's still jolly good fun. Ken Marshall is a prince on his way to marry princess Lysette Anthony and unite their two feuding cultures. But the night of the ceremony, the Princess is captured by Slayers, and taken to the Black Fortress, controlled by the Beast. Now Prince Colwyn must save his bride-to-be, with the help of a wise old man named Ynyr (Freddie Jones), the amateur and somewhat looney magician Ergo the Magnificent (David Barttley, who gets to pack it up as comedy relief), a cyclops (Bernard Bresslaw), and a band of thieves, led by Alun Armstrong, and save his planet Krull from anhiliation. The plot may sound weak and corny (and it does get that way sometimes), but it's very original stuff, actually. The final duel between Colwyn and the Beast, is totally disappointing. Otherwise, it's a good adventure movie (especially for those classic damsel-in-distress-is-held-captive-by-evil-forces-and-macho-prance-must-save-the-day situation fans). And if you look hard, you can spot Liam Neeson as one of the thieves!
