Summary: Sentimentality topples an otherwise good Kong re-make
Review: This re-make of the 1933 classic isn't as bad as it was made out to be by overly sentimental critics. In fact, in many areas it is better than the original. To begin with, this Kong was beautifully photographed in the Hawaiian islands for maximum effect. And the plot that surrounds finding Kong is more believable than in the original. Charles Grodin, as a money-hungry oil mogul, has more charisma than Robert Armstrong ever projected. And Jessica Lange, considering the role, is miles better than her predecssor Faye Ray. I guess if you have to nitpick at things that don't make it a five star flick is the hammy, hippy performance turned in by the [human] male lead Jeff Bridges. And overall, the movie could have been shorter. Of course, a successful re-make of a cultural icon like King Kong is nearly impossible. It's sort of like the race to the Moon or to the North Pole: the guy who does it first is going to be remembered longer than the others who come along. Kong's forty-three years at the top is the BIGGEST obstacle that holds the re-make back.

Summary: This is a joke. Isn't it?
Review: If a re-make is attempted then surely the idea is to make it better than the original. But this is not a patch on the 1933 version. The great ape is just a man in a suit here. The animatronic model ape looks nothing like the suit version, and perhas it's a blessing that it's only on-screen for a matter of seconds. And where are the dinosaurs? The only monster Kong gets to fight in this film is what seems to be an outsize draught excluder. Have special effects regressed since 1933? There are some memorable moments, but they're mainly due to the excellent scenery and haunting soundtrack. They're certainly not due to the Fay Wray wanna-be cuddling a giant rubber finger. The Son of Kong was better than this tame disapointment. I'd give this two stars for having a good soundtrack but it's better to ignore this dross and buy the score on its own on CD.

Summary: King Kong (1976) A man dressed in a monkey suit? Hogwash!!!
Review: When I saw this one in theatres back in 76, word was buzzing that some monkey shots were done by Rick Baker in a suit. But from what I read from local newspaper entertainment reports was that the ape was constructed of concrete and rubber, and costing over 4 million dollars to make, being over 40 ft. tall. And the snake, also constructed, costing somewhere around 1.2 million to make. Check out the end credits and you will see that Kong was ENGINEERED and CONSTRUCTED by Carlo Rambaldi.

Summary: Romantic and savvy re-working of classic 1930's picture.
Review: I saw this film when I was 11 and was mesmerized by the awesome ape on the big screen. I will always love the original classic, but this one has a touching and sad ending, which comes out of the relationship between Jessica and Kong. I would love to see a widescreen/THX version on VHS soon!

Review: Just saw this the other day on HBO. Like everyone else said this flick is dripping with cheese all the way round. Charles Grodin is hilarious. the bit parts sucked and jeff bridges--how come everyone shaves except him. But the real treat was Jessica Lange. Wow. I can't believe I was staring bug-eyed at the TV watching Jessica Lange act in a movie released the year before i was BORN. Why she won an emmy for such a debut performance i'll never know--she doesn't speak complete sentences through half the movie. But there's no question--she used to be HOT.

Summary: Greatest re-make I have ever seen
Review: I first saw parts of this movie when I was very small. I love it! I've always loved the 1933 KING KONG, and I like this one a little more. The only problem (not with the movie itself, but with the many video releases) is that the movie was filmed anamorphically and has never been available on video in the widescreen format. For 22 years, we have been losing John Guillermin's vision. I don't understand why Paramount has held back a widescreen version for 22 years, let alone giving the film a restoration.
