Summary: Some good action and horror... but not-so-good script.
Review: I like vampires, I like action movies. But I found Blade to be a dissapointment because of the somewhat weak and unbelievable (not in the suspension of disbelief category, but in the "Give me a break, any vampire with half a clue wouldn't do that..." category) character actions and plot contrivances pretty much kept this film from getting off the ground for me. I did like the techo-vampire rave.

Summary: A great movie.
Review: This is a brilliant film. I'm a big fan of Sci-Fi/Action films,some of my favourites being ALIENS,THE TERMINATOR,T2 AND ROBOCOP. I think the idea of the slayer being half vampire was very origanal[sorry if my spellings wrong],and Wesley Snipes was the perfect choice to play him. Stephen Dorff was a very evil/cool badguy,and Karen Jones was very tough. This film takes the old story of vampires and turns it around,throwing in plenty of action,tension and decsent special effects,ending up with the ultimate film. Beware if you're a bit squemish about blood and gore though,because there's lots of the ketchupy stuff. Sit back,dissengage your brain,and enjoy. P.A.B 10.

Review: Seriously, give this a chance if you appreciate action films at all. Some very memorable scenes, great violence, and nice performances by Snipes and Dorff. Definitely hangs nicely in the collection next to Predator.

Summary: A good flick for Eye-Candy Night
Review: I used to read Blade when he was a supporting character in the Tomb of Dracula and Dr. Strange comic books during the 70's and 80's. Those were the days--Blade the Vampire Slayer, Hannibal King, Rachael Van Helsing, Lilith...all brought to life by the mind of the incomparable Roy Thomas rendered by the stylish talents of Gene Colan, an artist who has yet to find an inker capable of enhancing, rather than obscuring, his work. Ahhhhh. While this is not quite the same guy (and I haven't read the redesigned 90's comic books), the film does deliver enough rock-em, sock-em action to keep everybody entertained on Pizza Friday Night, with enough brooding and situational (if not character) development to allow a quick trip to answer Nature's Call. This movie is designed to be an action film, not a cerebral thriller, and as an action film, it delivers exactly what it advertises--evil bad guy and his cannon (or sword) fodder, stalwart, implacable hero, and his trusty sidekicks. No problem there; just don't try to dissect it too deeply. I see a lot of comparisons to other movies, notably Lost Boys, which took literally years to grow on me, and John Carpenter's Vampires, which I did not see (after having read the book it was based on, "Vampire$" and the same author's earlier "Armor," it was clear to me that the most intriguing aspects of the books--what he was doing with Jack Crow and Felix--would NEVER translate to the screen (the same Jack Crow and Felix were in both books, but both had completely different histories, and the books were in different genres, time periods, and planets)). I'd have to say comparing this film and Lost Boys is an apples and oranges issue. The movies had completely different purposes. Lost Boys was a grey comedy, and this is an action flick. You might as well compare this with the Christopher Lee Dracula movies from Hammer Films. One thing I did like about this film immensely: Ever since Barnabas Collins, for whom the following made SENSE and represented a CHANGE, cinema vampires have increasingly been presented as tragic romantic figures. Even when they were bad, they were magnetic and sensual--the bite became a euphamism for the consummation of a relationship, the ultimate example being Interview With the Vampire, where EVERY bite was sexual in essence. Not so with these babies. When one of Blade's enemies bites you, it's not because he likes you; it's because you're dinner. You are expendable, and he has no more regard for you than you might have for a slab of steak in your grocer's cooler. To me, that strikes a chord that makes these guys even more dangerous.

Review: To the reviewer who claimed that such vampire movies as FRIGHT NIGHT and THE LOST BOYS are better than BLADE: Lighten up. Those were vampires in the 80s. BLADE is defiently vampires for the 90s. With the popularity of games like THE MASQUERADE out there, it was inevitable that the classic holy-water-and-cucufix vampire lore was going to change. And what a change. BLADE rocks. On one level, it is one of the best Hong-Kong style action flicks to be filmed in America, with at least one very cool, very symbolic, very well-choreographed scene that even rivals the fight scenes in the seminal American HK Fight flick, THE MATRIX. On another level, it is one of the best comic-book-to-screen adaptions ever produced (speaking as a comics fan, these are few and far between). Not quite as good as Burton's BATMAN, though obviously inspired by it, but much, MUCH better than any of the bat's sequals. Snipes is good and creepy, Dorff is a likeable scumbucket, and Kris Kristofferson pulls off his best role since AMERIKA. And the DVD is great. Superior picture, suprior sound, and the absolute BEST set of extras ever put to disc. It's not perfect; there's a car chase that's laughably corny, some snippets of bad dialogue, and one fight scene that falls flat. But overall, well deserving of the four stars.
