Rating: Summary: Saw will freak you out Review: By the end of the movie, you feel like you have been through a war, and that you have watched one of the best horror films made in the last few years. Saw, which is rated R, is a great horror/suspense movie that takes one part Blair Witch Project, one part Silence of the Lambs and one part Se7en to make a movie that will stay in your head for days to come.
With the run of serial killer movies going on right now, Saw's plot might seem familiar: A creepy killer who kidnaps people and tortures them until they die, but Wan and Whannell take that premise and twist it on its head. Of course, like most movie villains, the Jigsaw Killer is really only trying to teach his victims the value of life through mind numbing torture and death.
Rating: Summary: Thank God It Isn't PG-13!!! Review: First of all, I can't complain enough about all of the PG-13 "scary" movies coming out. Even Wes Craven's new flick has been slated PG-13. It almost sickens me. Even if Saw was completely horrible, which it isn't, it would still get points in my book for at least being R. Saw proves to be a great reminder of why scary movies need to be R.
Saw is an uncomfortable psychological thriller that follows in the footsteps of David Fincher. Think of the savagery and bloodiness of Seven with the atmosphere and puzzlement of The Game. Saw is extremely well-paced, has some great visiual (often disturbing) imagery, and has an awesome ending you won't see coming for a thousand miles. And I can't stress the fact that it is rated R enough. What more do you want?
Rating: Summary: What did I just see?! Review: I am completely baffled by the fact that this film ended up being intelligently written, well-acted, and totally unpredictable. The only real negative I experienced during the film is that there are a few moments where I wanted the story to go a bit faster, the pace quickened for my own personal satisfaction, but as the final scene unfolded and a sinister grin crept across my face, all was forgiven. I am shocked. Once in a while a movie comes out that is destroyed by the critics and I have a serious time figuring out why. The acting here is solid, lead by a cast of pros including Cary Elwes, Danny Glover, and Monica Potter. The other cast members are all surprisingly good, particularly screenwriter/actor Leigh Whannell who plays the other man trapped in the room with Cary Elwes; and Makenzie Vega who plays the young daughter of Cary Elwes' character. That little girl often shows up every other actor in the movie, and the cast is very strong besides. The story begins with a man who awakens to find himself chained to a large steel pipe. He is in an enclosed room with only one other occupant who is also chained on the other side of the room. Essentially, this story starts in the middle for these two characters where they gradually figure out why they are there. In the meantime, other characters are out there somewhere who are either wrapped up in the macabre happenings or are potential victims of the diabolical charade. While this film is certainly no masterpiece, it does flirt with greatness time and again enough to merit a quality rating. By the time the credits were rolling I was smiling with surprise and secretly cursing myself for ever listening to the so-called "professional" critics who put down this film. As far as Horror films go, "Saw" is a diamond in the rough.
Rating: Summary: 1 Star for Bad Acting and 1 Star for Stealing My Money Review: I remember how excited I was when this finally came out in the theatres. I had seen the trailer and was sincerely looking forward to it for a month or two. It was the only film last year that I went to see on its opening night and I wish I hadn't. There were reviews saying it was, "As good as 'Se7en'" and "It's the best horror film of the year." It certainly doesn't come close to 'Se7en' and it was the only movie that I went to see in 2004 that when it ended I would have liked a refund. Now I do have an open mind when it comes to horror films. For example, I am a big fan of 2003's 'Cabin Fever'. I can accept the fact that it wasn't a great horror movie and many people thought it sucked but it is a movie that I could watch repeatedly and still find something enjoyable in it because it doesn't take itself too seriously. But, I was extremely shocked at how bad of a movie 'Saw' is. Cary Elwes still can't act to save his own life (or the other guy's life, for that matter). Danny Glover should have just stayed "retired" because he is just plain out of his element in this one. There is nothing original in this movie except the setup and that itself was mildly original. It's where this movie takes you and how it unfolds that completely falls flat and ridiculous. The ending gives you something that you probably don't expect because the filmmaker's and the writer wants the audience to forget about everything else they had just seen leading up to it. This movie was so far from scary or enjoyable that its horrifying in itself. The locations (minus the chamber the two were stuck in) were completely absurd as well. I mean c'mon, What kind of upscale doctors office has a parking garage like that?!? I came out of the theatre thankful that it was over and that the loud and obnoxious people sitting next to me had kept me more entertained during the movie than the movie itself. Please, I beg you not to buy, rent, or steal this movie. It's Junk.
Rating: Summary: Its a movie, its fun to watch, good enough for me Review: I saw (no pun intended) this film in theatres when it came out and was dissapointed when I left. I had been looking forward to it and was let down for some reason. I was hung up on plotholes and trying to put together pieces that didn't make sense. Since that time, I've had the desire to watch SAW again and re-analyze everything. Well guess what? It still didn't make sense and there were major plotholes. But I enjoyed it. My wife jumped several times and there are a good number of gnarly murder scenes. This is just a good horror film with some plot problems. So what? Its enjoyable. If you don't kill yourself trying to make logic out of this film, you will have a good time being grossed out by it. Take SAW for what its worth and you'll be satisfied.
Rating: Summary: made me jump out of my seat Review: If you're looking for a good scare this is the movie you should see. After sitting through a couple of disappointing horror movies (darkness, white noise), I was pleased to finally find a good scare. The acting isn't the greatest, but I think the ending was twisted! Some instances of good camera work.
Rating: Summary: Just taken from other movies Review: It's become very clear that hollywood has ran into a monster
creative wall. This movie is just trying to take advange of
another little "horror" era that probably started with The
Ring a few years ago. This is a rather predictable movie as
even my moronic brother in law seen who the "killer" was just
shortly after he appeared in the film.
The main focus on the movie is two guys with one being a
doctor and the other guy gets paid to snoop and take
pictures of other peoples business. The movie for the most
part goes for shock value. Not that I mind, but it's just
that the movie isn't as deep/dark and scary as it wants to
be. There are a few original ideas like "the head vice" but
for the most part the movie just takes bits and pieces from
other movies of the genre and puts them together.
I'd have to say the acting is the worst. Cary Elwes is just
an aweful actor in this film. How could the director allow
such pathetic work? Did Cary just come THAT cheap? Even
Danny Glover was bad in this one! It is sad because even
though it steals from other movies it could have been alot
better. The acting and bits in pieces seem abit to rushed.
And we can't forget the car scene. What's up with that?
As somebody said, why not just have a few cut scenes? It's
much easier and less annoying.
However, even with the bad acting and unoriginal ideas
even a poor mans Se7en is better than alot of movies in
this genre nowdays. You would probably be better off to
wait until this comes in HBO though. It simply isn't
worth the money. It will will help out a spoof movie in
the future though.
Rating: Summary: Top of the line thriller Review: It's hard to know where to start with this movie. It's just so good. I guess it would be good to start off by saying that this movie is more than just props and imagery. It's very, very plot driven, with a story that will have you on the edge of you seat, screaming at the screen and droping your jaw at the ending. It's twist after turn, shock after scare. Not your typical horror, not your typical slasher. This movie is realy very psychological, and I think any one who likes a good mystery will get a kick out of it.
But, any review of this movie wouldn't be a real review if it DIDN'T talk about the visuals. So many cool prop ideas are in the movie, from the puppet (who the creaters named 'Bill') to the pig mask to all the chilling murder scenes. This is where the movie gives horror fans what they really want. Also, Saw is not uptight when it comes to the blood, but not so much to just be 'slasher'. The blood doesn't drown out the story.
I will have to admit, the acting by Cary Elwes is wretched, and he's the main character really, so that does hurt the film. Still, even his 'drama club' quality acting can't kill the blood chilling story.
As for the DVD itself, the bonuses leave a lot to be desired. No cut scenes and the 'making of' is pitiful. You learn more by listening to the commentary than by watching 'Sawed Off'. Saw is the type of movie that 'making of's were made for, and they really droped that ball there. Perhaps they're holding out for a collectors edition or some thing. I'd be pretty let down if that was the case.
Lastly I have to mention the ending. Seriously...it's all about the ending. Well...not ALL about the ending, but...I was blown away. Just go see it. You wont be sorry.
Rating: Summary: Freaky Review: Saw is a good movie. It's suspenseful, gory, and keeps your attention. At the end you'll be wondering what happened, and will have to rewind. The only thing is that it doesnt fully live up to its hype.
Rating: Summary: Saw - The double meaning is killer Review: Two words come to mind after watching this movie: HOLY CRAP!!! I love scary movie and psychotic thrillers; however, most of them don't even scare me at all anymore. Saw is so creepy and realistic that it had me wondering how long before a copy cat killer emerges. The premise of the movie is two guys are chained to pipes in a bathroom, and they are trying to reconstruct the steps to how they got there. In the midst of this reconstruction, they discuss the killer who sets up scenarios like the one they are in where the victims kill themselves. Anyway, enough of the plot. I would recommend this movie to anyone who truly loves a good psycho thriller; however, put the kids away. There is a goofy clown in this movie too....Oh no no IT. I would give this movie about 4.5 out of 5 stars, and it is well worth the rental fee.
