Rating: Summary: No. Just...no. Review: (...) Without a doubt, this is the stupidest movie I've seen all year. Even stupider than the atrocity that was The Day After Tomorrow. It's not the worst movie I've seen this year, just all around the stupidest. I've never seen a movie that was so full of nothing before either. I'm not even kidding, this movie has no actual problem that we can care about until about 7/8 into it. I had to watch it in 4 sittings because I was so bored just waiting for something to happen. Don't get me wrong though, I can sit through a lot in movies. I can put up with the kind that drag on, but something cool happens after time. That's not the case here. I didn't even want to finish it, but did in hopes of warning some of you out there.
Corn starts out with a guy who looks like a perverted version of Skinner from The X-Files trying to be scary in giving us a speech about some revolution in the growing of rice. He's obviously reading from a teleprompter or card, because his eyes are following something. It's embarassing to watch, and gives the rest of the movie little hope. But it follows the life of a pregnant girl named Emily who lives on a ranch with her dad. Two of their sheep died while eating some new kind of weed that's growing on the other side of their wire fence. You'd think this would cause a huge dispute between her dad and the guy who owns the land on the other side since his corn is producing the weed, but it doesn't. They just talk about making a new fence, then part ways. And that's about it for the next 40 minutes. Everything else doesn't matter, and will soon be forgotten. But here's what goes on just so you know what to expect: Emily gets a job at a grocery store that buys the sheep that eat the weed. This weed causes the sheep to GO VIOLENT as she puts it many, many times throughout the movie (she has to say it at least 5 times in one scene alone). And it causes one to give birth to a lamb with no forelegs [which I couldn't tell until they said something near the end because the puppet used for this was terrible]. Really, she's overracting to this. The first case where the sheep GO VIOLENT is when a mother nips at her lamb who was trying to get some of the weed. She doesn't kill it or anything, just shoos it away. But a few "problems" happen with this situation, and I use that term loosely because a no one makes a big deal over them. Working at the grocery store just to get the health benefits, she makes a friend in another worker who's also pregnant. They sort of become friends...up until, get this, her son gets killed by a sheep attack. I laughed at this scene for a few minutes because of how rediculous it is. Here's how it broke down, leading to the kid's death:
-Mother goes to Emily's house with kid.
-Emily and said mother talk, while the kid opens the god damn screen door, it slams, and runs outside to the place where the sheep are kept.
-Kid runs directly to the fence.
-Kid gets loudly baahed at by a dozen sheep.
-Kid gets no visible wounds, or bleeds anywhere, and his mother drives off in a bad mood.
-Kid dies the next day.
When the scene where Emily gets a call from the hospital saying it's her friend came on, I said out loud "oh you gotta be kidding me...THE SHEEP KILLED THE KID!?". But that's the end of the whole VIOLENT SHEEP deal. Emily makes appointments with the company that is behind some genetic research on crossing over the genes from different organisms. This somehow caused the corn to grow a weed. No one knows why it grows, and we're never given an answer. But it's in the movie for some reason. This leads to the most pointless ending I've seen in a long time, and I insist that you ask me how it goes just so you know what to expect. It's so horribly dumb that it hurts to think about it.
The picture quality wasn't as bad as I expected. It looks like any generic straight-to-video movie does. There was some grain here and there, but the back of the box is misleading. It makes the movie look terrible as far as visuals go but it's just the opposite when you watch it. It's just too bad the movie itself wasn't of the same quality as the film it was shot on. And the audio was out of wack. Some scenes would be loud while others were impossible to hear with how muffled the voices were. And no, there weren't any captions or subtitles available. Good job there guys.
And now, back up for the one star rating. Keep in mind that when I review a dvd, it's for the dvd in its entirety. Not just the movie. There is one whole special feature on the disc- an interview with some scientist that runs for just under 3 minutes. It's not interesting, and she spends the first 30 seconds just talking about how she read the script. That's all. There's also a "Coming Soon" feature but those don't even count any more as extras. I will sort of count the hologram box if only because of how pretty it is, and captured the attention of many customers since its release. Then again, it failed to get anyone to rent it.
There's so much I could've done in the hour and a half I spent watching this movie. I could've watched the special features to From Dusk Till Dawn that I just bought the other day. I could've washed my clothes 10 times. I could've baked a cake. I just hope that I at least helped you in avoiding this movie. I don't even know what that reviewer below was thinking. Maybe they WENT VIOLENT while watching the movie and went into a fit of rage, causing memory loss. If there is any single reason at all to watch Corn, it's for watching sheep puppets nip at a little kid. Then again, sheep puppets in general are funny. So you could just get your fix with one of many Muppets movies.
Rating: Summary: C O R N - starring Jena Malone Review: I have been waiting for this movie to come out for months. I have only seen the preview for it, but was so intrigued by the plot. I wrote to the producer of the movie and he informed me of when the DVD would be released and I am so happy to see amazon will be selling it! I have no doubt that it will become a cult favorite.
From Filmmaker Magazine, a short synopsis: "In the vein of Silkwood or Rosemary's Baby, Corn is about a young woman (Jena Malone) who seeks refuge on her father's sheep ranch after an affair with the politician she works for leaves her pregnant. When the sheep turn preternaturally aggressive after munching weeds produced by a neighbor's biogenetically altered corn crop, she embarks on an investigation that also exposes uncomfortable truths in her own family. "It's a dark, gothic kind of story that crosses a lot of territory," ... "I wanted to meditate on biology and our ability to control it in the context of an experiment that goes badly wrong. It's in a storytelling tradition that goes back to Edgar Allan Poe and Mary Shelley."
The 35mm Corn was shot in New Jersey, Yonkers, downtown Manhattan and at Columbia University over 25 days this July and August.
Rating: Summary: THE SHEEP MAY GET EWE Review: I have to say CORN is one of the most unusual movies I've seen in a while. It's premise is original considering most of what is coming out these days; unfortunately, the originality doesn't always make a great movie. I'm not sure what screenwriter/director Dave Silver was hoping to accomplish, other than giving his little boy Luke a small but pivotal role. It's obvious he's trying to make a social comment on genetic engineering and corporate coverups; but also we have a young 18 year girl who is carrying the child of a man old enough to be her grandfather; she's also the victim of potential child abuse from her father when she was young; and she's having trouble keeping her job due to her pregnancy and the fact that she becomes a social megaphone for what's going on with the sheep on her father's ranch. But Silver doesn't truly focus on the corn issue as much as the girl's attempts to have a child, be a friend to Rachel, and understand her father. Jena Malone (Saved, Cold Mountain) gives a commendable if somewhat overwrought performance; Don Harvey as her father wasn't a strong enough actor to bring all the dimensions out; the rest of the cast is merely adequate. CORN is not a horror movie, so don't let the cover fool you; this is not a supernatural movie, just another one of those man vs. nature flicks. If the script had focused more on building suspense and showing us more of what the sheep were doing (there is one scene where they are attacking the little boy and you can surely tell the sheep are animatronic puppets). Overall, though, there is some interesting facts about genetics and Malone makes us stay interested, even up to its uh-oh, here come the chickens ending.
Rating: Summary: great movie maybe cause im a vegitarian Review: Im not really sure why everyone here disliked this movie. It stars jena malone from donnie darko and jamie harrold dr. elmer from steven king's kingdom hospital. The story is great the cinematography was really good the actors were great, the special effects were awesome. This isnt really a horror movie its a thriller with lots of elements that could come true. I would have to say that the ending is not what i would have done with it and is a bit unfinished but the movie had lots of story and got to long. Most places around carry this for rent, just dont be afraid and make your own opinion.
Rating: Summary: When Sheep Attack Review: So I see this movie at Blockbuster. It's got a pretty ridiculous 3-D prismatic cover that features a herd of demonic sheep and it's called "Corn". I couldn't resist...
The tagline on the video box, "It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature" is borrowed from an old margarine commercial. This thing has got to be awful, right? Well, the reality is that it's not quite as bad as you might imagine. It ends up being a weird Rosemary's Baby kind of story about genetic manipulation and aggression. Not done with the same panache of 28 Days Later, it still strives for a unique story. In the end, "When Sheep Attack" might have been a better title, and it's pretty boring at times... but I think two stars is fair.
Rating: Summary: its not that bad Review: This movie isnt that bad, it's not a big bugget movie people shouldnt complaint just because a movie dun have enough special effect to fool ur logical determination for how good it should be. THIS movie does make a point, its kindda taking the danger of eating mad cow meat point to a further side, u can even consider this is a sci-fi movie. Some of the scene have taken the materials too over-done and the cuttie Jena Malone is good but not that kindda acting u would say good if u compare it to something like "erin brockouich" from Julia robert, which u can kindda put this movie to the same catergory with EB.
