Summary: A DVD zone IT'S SMALL BUT IT BITES
Review: I've always liked this movie. Not because I'm particularly interested in the fascinating life of our little friends -the insects- or because I'm a curious fisherman; no, simply because SQUIRM is an above average B movie with great horror scenes and well written characters.

A scene will, if it's necessary, show you a bit of director Jeff Lieberman's know-how. Near the beginning of the movie, the main character being quietly speaking to his girl-friend, a terribly long worm (yeech !) quickly crawls down the wall behind him. Without his noticing. You spend the rest of the scene wondering whether the worm will attack the hero. Stressing.

The copy presented in this MGM DVD is perfect and deserves to stay in your library if you're interested in cult movies.

Summary: BASED ON A TRUE ACCOUNT
Review: My name is Michael, I was alive in Fly Creek where this film is set in. I survived this horror. The film is for the most part accurate. I don't know how these creatures did what they did, but IT DID HAPPEN. I was only 5. Today, it is still difficult for me.

Summary: I was in the movie!
Review: Not much of a review, but look for me as a passenger in the bus scene, my mom too! Yes, it was cheesy, but the entire crew was a great group of New Yorkers who stayed at my Dad's motel that summer-what a great time and experience! It's fun to see Scardino, Penelope, and Peter in bit parts from time to time. Did you know that Edgar Lansbury is Angela's brother? Let's have a reunion! Whatever happened to Darrell Jonas?

Summary: SQUISHY FUN!
Review: One of my all time favorite movies, SQUIRM has freaked me out ever since I caught it on late night TV in junior high. Much of the cast is rather amateurish, but their personalities are so enjoyable-- and excessively southern -- that it makes them MORE realistic. The worm attacks are truly unnerving and frightening and never fake looking. The infamous "wormface" scene still holds up some 20 years later and the plot never stalls or dulls. Though not as rich in story as THE BIRDS, SQUIRM stills manages to pack a lot of creepy punches and scares into 90 minutes, and comes off as one of the best "nature runs amok" films ever made. So whatever happened to that sequel announced 3 years ago?

Summary: Yucky, creepy...and like that
Review: Probably the best earthworm horror movie ever made, Squirm is the brainchild of Jeff Lieberman, one of the more talented horror directors of the 70s. Also responsible for the amazingly goofy later film, Blue Sunshine, Lieberman here does a good job of making earthworms creep the dickens out of you, showing them emerging from a bathroom faucet and squirming together in the thousands in various locations.

Of course the real creepy stuff is how, when, and where the worms engulf humans and there's enough of that here as well to give this film a justifiably cult status. This is certainly not a masterpiece, but it is a lot of fun for those who love creepy crawly stuff.

Another overlooked Lieberman film is Just Before Dawn about two behemoth guys who chop people up. Worth checking out.

Summary: From Squirm country!
Review: That movie of course will be good, funny if not taken seriously.

The effect are funny but well done for that year, 1975.

Summary: Pretty good
Review: The acting is poorly chosen, but the movie has good potential -- if only other acting people would've done it! The leaders, especially the man woman (I forgot her name) do especially bad work. Possibly the best actor was the man who becomes a "worm-face". Roger I think his name was, but not sure.
In general, the worm scenes are a bit corny. In one, we see thousands of VERY obvious rubber worms falling. Honestly, it looked so fake I laughed! Some of them are more real but most really look rubbery and fake.
I particularly disliked the mother. She was increasingly naive and almost deserved her fate. Really, she did not seem to be very observant.
Overall, sadly, the movie was a victim of poor effects, probably bad editing, and poor actors. If it had just had a few different actors and actresses, it would be way better. The movie is also very SLOW paced. Normally, as I've rented it many times, nowadays I just speed to the good parts.
Worth a rental and I think it's good, just has its bad problems.

Summary: Barely watchable without MST3000 commentary
Review: The first time I saw this movie I felt like I'd been somehow trapped in some dank and unpleasant universe. The acting is generally bad with actors either too leaden or too animated and the script itself is laughable. The casting is interesting and I wondered at the time how many of these people were related to each other.

The idea of earthworms turning carnivorous due to exposure to electricity was new but even as a kid I had to wonder why millions of previous electrical storms had failed to trigger the onslaught of wormy predators. The sheriff of the town is a few steps down from the sheriff in 'The Blob', he's stupid with no redeeming characteristics and I enjoyed watching his fate.

Watching this again on Mystery Science Theater was a whole new experience and it was actually enjoyable. Then again, they were able to take even the most egregious films and make them at least marginally fun. Unless you have a strong need to watch worms or bad Southern acting, I'd advise you to watch the MST3000 version of Squirm, if it ever is available on video.

Summary: A movie for everyone
Review: This film polarizes people's opinions. It is either so awful that you like it or so awful that you don't like it. I personal found it difficult to complete. You could easily mistake this for a Lucas film. It has family interaction, a down to earth challenge, and an electrifying effect on the landscape. There are several "stay in the car scenes" and plenty of opportunities to say, "don't do that".

So reiterating, for some people it will worm its way into their harts; for their people it is a gross opportunity. That is why I could not give it a one or five stat rating.
