Summary: This is the scariest werewolf flick ever!
Review: I couldn't believe how scary this movie was when i first saw it back in '83.I was petrified.The soudtrack is completely unique and scary.I have never heard anything like it.I loved it so much I have a VHS copy of this movie.I can't wait for the DVD version.Get this movie if you are a horror fan.

Summary: THE HOWLING
Review: THE HOWLING is one of the best werewolf movies I've ever seen. The story is about a female TV news reporter who has a traumatic encounter with a rapist and after that she is sent to a group community retreat. Then she slowly begins to find out that almost every one at the retreat is a werewolf. The film has a bizarre story along with some amazing special effects.

Summary: The Best Werewolf Move Ever Made!
Review: ....as well as one of best in the horror genre, period. I have been waiting for this dvd release for a long time. The transformation scenes are the best ever (they ironically look more realistic than the "advanced" CGI graphics used in recent werefolf movies such as An American Werewolf in Paris). Amazingly, make-up artist Rob Bottin was only 21 years old when this movie was made. If you want to be scared out of your wits, get this dvd!

Review: This movie will scare you without question. "The Howling" is about a news anchor woman who has a close encounter with a murderer named eddy, but he turns out to be something else, something furry. Her and her husband visit a retreat to try and escape the nightmares of her encounter only to find themselves in the middle of the woods with the werewolves . Awesome special effects by rob bottin. The werewolf tranformations are way ahead of there time. Great acting, a little bit of comedy, and very scary. I was afraid of this movie as a kid and still am. I've seen this movie on video but, I'm definitly picking up the dvd. It's worth it if you want only the best werewolf movie.

Summary: The Howling
Review: This is hands down, the best werewolf film I've seen and I've seen nearly all of them. This film features good, tight direction by Joe Dante. Dante pays homage to traditional werewolf folklore as well as classic films such as "The Wolf Man." The cast is also excellent, most notably Robert Picardo as the serial killer/werewolf Eddie Quist. There's also a cool cameo by Dick Miller (Gremlins, Gremlins 2, A Bucket of Blood, Night of the Creeps, etc.) as the book store owner, a face horror buffs should easily recognize. Rob Bottin's (Seven, Fight Club, the Robocop films) awesome special effects may leave you disturbed and awe-struck at the same time. If you haven't seen the film, I don't want to give the look of the werewolves away, but it's pretty frightening. I only hope that this film makes it to DVD soon and preferably in a special edition. A commentary by Joe Dante would really be nice as well as a behind-the-scenes look at how the make-up effects were executed. This year marks the 20th year since it's release, so it would be really cool if it came out this year. I, for one, would definitely buy it.

Summary: Quite an enjoyable horror/thriller.
Review: I'm a semi-fan of horror films, which means I like to watch them though I tend not to devote undying love to them. Werewolf films are a mixed bag for me so I was pleasantly surprised by The Howling. The film began VERY slowly, with nothing truly compelling occuring in the first half hour, but the movie's real suspense hits in around the 50-minute mark and holds you tight for the last 40 minutes, which are filled with suspense, chills, and some good werewolf action.

I've heard comments around that this a partial comedy, yet with the exception of a few scenes near the end, I found little humor in it, which I found as a plus. It takes itself seriously, and it's tone is enhanced by some wonderful creature effects. The transformation scenes are still among the best ever and worth watching alone for these moments.

Summary: Up there with American!
Review: Mostly I hear bad comments about the howling, in comparison with American Werewolf In London, and sometimes I find people who hate them both and actually call themselves werewolf fans! Well, I don't know whether or not we should be comparing the two, they're both great and the only thing the two have in common is that they were made close to each other in time, and were both werewolf movies. AWIL is basically a modern version of the old b/w Wolfman starring Lon Chaney Jr., Howling is totally different. It's more horror than AWIL was, but they both have their scary moments, basically the scenes with the werewolves in them. The Howling has some truly unforgettable moments, and some truly frightening ones. True, the main character, AKA ET's mom if you've seen Scream, is not all that likable, and the other female character who actually is kinda cute gets it in one of the scarier scenes, but this is still a movie you can really get caught up in and get scared by. By the way, if you want to see some other good werewolf movies, don't believe what the others say that there are no other good ones out there. True that there aren't enough, but there are some. Just so few perfect ones. American Werewolf In Paris is really a good movie, it's just difficult for the typical lycanthrope fan to get past the obvious CGI effects, but if you can do that and actually get lost in the movie, you can truly find some of the scenes scary. Also, of course, there's the original Wolfman I mentioned before, and Jack Nicholson's Wolf, which is not a horror film, but should probably be classified as romance. It's one of the best werewolf movies ever made actually. There are many sequels to the Howling of course, but most are better if viewed as comedies. All are worth watching for fun, in an MST3K sort of way, except Howling 7. Don't torture yourself! This one is like, some other independent film company got the rights to the Howling name and made a movie about line dancing. If I recall correctly you never even see the werewolf. Maybe a moment at the end. THere are probably more good comedies out about werewolves rather than actual horror. The movie Bad Moon isn't that bad, but they take the werewolf transformation too far so that he ends up looking like a sewer rat. See company of wolves for a good, yet artsy horror version of red riding hood. Also see the movie/musical Red Riding Hood, the one with Craig T. Nelson and Isabella Rossellini, for a werewolf version of Red Riding Hood that your kids can watch too. Parental Guidance suggested.

Summary: BEST HORROR MOVIE
Review: THE HOWLING is a rare original cult-movie, far from the reluctant werewolf pattern. The idea of werewolves instead of a single one hadn't been well developed before, as some legend variations. It has the legendary transformation scene with Rob Bottin's effects, stronger with Pino Donaggio's score (with no CD releasing yet). Rick Baker (Bottin's brother) was consultant and created later the Oscar winner effects of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, other historical movie.

Both movies are linked. Contemporaries, they represented a new era. There's no point discussing which one's the better. "AWIL" is more modern in a way, having non-sense humor, bloody scenes and unbelievable effects. THE HOWLING, earlier, has a classical movie profile, surprising plot and ending. Its characters were named after classical werewolf and horror movies directors, like George Waggner, Sam Newfield, R. William Neill, Erle Kenton, Lew Landers, Terry Fischer, Charlie Barton, Jerry Warren and Jack Molina. There are lots of ironies, like THE WOLF MAN quotations during the film and after credits, and the wolf cartoon in a tense scene. John Carradine, Roger Corman, John Sayles and Forrest J. Ackerman appear, giving additional charm. It's the first time more complex werewolves characters emerge, like Eddie (Robert Picardo, the scariest werewolf on movie history) and Marsha (Elisabeth Brooks, 1951-1997). Joe Dante made this classic with $1,6 million and used his own garage for the rated movies scene.

Lots of ideas were borrowed later ("the gift" in WOLF). There were sequels non-related to the original, without the "THE" of the title. Most of them have nothing to do with each other. It's depressing to someone expecting a real sequel to watch HOWLING II.

Comparing to THE HOWLING, Brandner's book is different in many aspects, but both are unique. If you liked one, try the other, but don't get anxious finding total equivalence, some points of one aren't in the other and vice-versa.

Unfortunately, the movie had no lucky on TV. Its first release on VHS had a blueish image. Later, a brighter version came, yellowish, but allowing explicit sight of the effects and a better screen fitting. I can't tell which one has the original color or if none of them has. The MGM VHS release (August, 2000), after years of "out of print", is a very good presentation - no cuts, Hi-Fi Stereo. The only possible complaints are a few optical ghosts during the title presentation and a beautiful but not original cover. The light gets closer to the brighter version, with impressive color balancing. But I don't know if it's closer to the original.

Lucky are those who watched it in the theater, with original color and no lateral reductions. We'll have to hope for a DVD version in a letterbox format, with tone color and light fidelity to the cinema's. A special edition, maybe director's, would be wonderful: interviews, soundtrack, theatrical trailler/teasers and more. Otherwise, loyal horror movies enthusiasts are not having what they deserve.

Summary: The best werewolf movie ever!
Review: This is by far the best werewolf movie ever. The special effects are still unmatched to this day. I know American Werewolf of London is good but by far not anywhere near as good as this one. Good plot and not a lot of comedy like American Werewolf of London. Enjoy!
