Summary: Delightfully Demented Double Dip!
Review: DERANGED- Ezra Cobb (Roberts Blossom) is a true mama's boy. His mother (Cosette Lee) is the dark center of his universe. He has known nothing but her hyper-religious legalism and dominance for his entire life. Unfortunately, when she dies, Ezra cannot face reality and digs the old gal out of her grave and takes her home! He goes on as though she'd never actually died. Ezra's mind continues to unravel, leading to further grave-robbing, kidnapping, murder, and a very twisted dinner party. Ezra Cobb is based on Ed Gein, the original "psycho". MOTEL HELL- Rory Calhoun (Red House) is farmer Vincent, owner and proprietor of the Motel Hello, that infamous inn with the blinking "O"! Vincent has another business going too. His smoked meats are as popular as they are tasty! With his sister Ida (Nancy Parsons) at his side, Vincent carries on the family tradition, using his secret recipe for delicious.... um, fleshy treats. This movie is packed with classic lines and scenes! The ghoulish humor is perfectly blended (like sausage) with the horror elements. The climactic chainsaw duel alone is worth the price of the film! A MUST for your dvd shelf! ...

Summary: A Diamond In The Rough
Review: Do you remember actor Rory Calhoun? If not, he was the actor who starred in the 1953 classic "How To Marry A Millionnaire" with Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe. He also starred in the 1954 Western Masterpiece "The River of No Return" with Robert Mitchum and Marilyn Monroe.

That was back in the Fifties...mid Fifties...when I first entered grade school. "Motel Hell" was released by United Artists in 1980 and it, too, stars Rory. Now on with the show...

Rory stars as the famous Farmer Vincent...procurer of fine smoked meats that have been enjoyed by those "within a 100 mile radius" for more than 30 years. His sidekick is Ida, played by Nancy Parsons. The concoction of Rory and Nancy spells SHEER TERROR. Let's sum it up this way, as I quote Farmer Vincent from the movie: "It takes all types of critters to make Farmer Vincent fritters."

The film also features, of all people, WOLFMAN JACK...who portrays a Reverend (no foolin').

This 22-year-old horror classic is defintely a diamond in the rough, and may prove to be a needle in a haystack when you go out to find it. It was just released on DVD and is accompanied by another horror landmark "Deranged". The second flick is more of a portrayal of "me"..."Motel Hell" is a dream for horror flick fans. It has the terror and humor that makes this genre such a delightful stroll through pure entertainment.

Wanna get scared...laugh...catch some great acting by the legend Rory Calhoun...and The Wolfman??? See "Motel Hell". As Rory says in a "tongue-in-cheek" scene from the film - "Meat's Meat, and Man's Gotta Eat."

On a "horror" scale of 1-to-5, five being the highest, I give "Motel Hell" a 4.3. Enjoy!

Summary: Great movie - MOTEL HELL
Review: Get this DVD for Motel Hell. it's unlikely that we'll see a special edition of this classic released any time soon so this is probably as good as we're ever going to get.

It takes all kinds of critters to make Farmer Vincent's fritters. Great score by Lance Rubin (who also co-composed HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME due out soon.) I love Rory Calhoun's performance in this movie.

Classic.

Deranged is not so great but still fun and, heh, you get a free movie.

Summary: Really fun. Motel Hell- 4*, Deranged-3*
Review: Gotta love Motel Hell! Funny, gory, creepy. It certainly keeps you entertained throughout. Calhoun is great, his sister - like something out of a John Water's movie -- is hysterical. This has a little bit of everything. Great garden(!)scenes. Deranged is just creepy. Slimey creepy. Well done because it has a kind of documentary feel to it, but there is something that makes you feel just a little dirty after you've watched it.

Review: Great movie! Very cryptic and creepy. But beware the most gruesome scene has been cut from the DVD [BOOOOO HISSSSS!]. If possible try to get a copy of the original VHS copy for the entire movie.
BAD MGM, BAD MGM BAD!!

Summary: A Fun Cannibal-Themed Midnite Movie Double Feature
Review: Horror fanatics, cannibal junkies, late-night movie freaks, and fans of bizarre cult flicks have a lot to be thankful for, now that MGM has released two cult gems (one of them quite rare) on one fantastic Midnite Movies Double Feature disc. The DERANGED/MOTEL HELL DVD is just one of the whole new batch of discs in MGM's incredible Midnite Movies Collection (with features everything else from little-known shockers to Vincent Price vehicles).

On one side of the double-sided DVD is DERANGED, a truly bizarre film directed by Bob Clark and written by Alan Ormsby, the two who were also responsible for the fun zombie flick CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS. While similar material was handled much more famously in Tobe Hooper's masterpiece THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, Bob Clark and Alan Ormsby's film comes across as much creepier, perhaps due to it's rather unorthodox treatment of it's grisly subject matter. The film is based on the exploits of murderer, cannibal, grave-robber, and all-around unwholesome guy, Ed Gein (whose crimes also influenced everything from PSYCHO to SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and helped elevate him to almost mythical pop-culture status). The film is basically that... a detailed study of the life and crimes of Ed Gein, although that name is never used. Roberts Blossom gives a very effective performance as Ezra Cobb who, as the narrator tells us, is a possible necrophile (an alternate title for the film was actually CONFESSIONS OF A NECROPHILE, although no necrophilia is actually shown). Simply put, DERANGED is a masterpiece, and by far my favorite film about Ed Gein. The reason the movie works so well is that Bob Clark and Alan Ormsby maintain a faux-documentary treatment to the material throughout the film... The constant appearance of an onscreen narrator might seem a little awkward for some viewers, but in this viewer's opinion, it's part of the film's quirky charm. The strange musical score, which sounds like it's made up mostly from a church organ, only helps to establish the film's peculiar tone. There's also a particuarly strange sense of humor given to the proceedings which is, admittingly, quite hilarious when given the subject matter of the film... all very amusing! It's important to note that the film focuses more on atmosphere than gore, although there are some grisly moments (particuarly at the climax). It's also very important to mention that the print that MGM used is apparently cut... Unfortunately, the film is missing the infamous "brain scooping" sequence... It appears that MGM could only get the rights to the edited version, but it's a miracle that such an obscure film even made it to the format in the first place, so it's a minor quibble. The transfer is presented in it's original aspect ratio and it looks fantastic, and that's what's most important. There's also a great theatrical trailer.

To understand the humor of MOTEL HELL, found on the flip side of the disc, you don't need to look any further than the tagline... "It takes all kinds of critters to make Farmer Vincent fritters!" Now, take into account that the film is about cannibalism and you know right from the start that you're in for a fun ride. Many critics have often cited this film as being a black-comedy version of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, and they're not too far off. People just can't get enough of Farmer Vincent's famous smoked-meat, and he's not telling anyone what the special ingredients are. At the same time, there are frequent nightly accidents happening near his motel at night, and strange sounds can be heard from the walled garden out back... That's really all you need to know because half of the fun of this film is being completely blind-sided by some of the film's plot twists (many of them are too priceless to reveal here and the less you know the better). MOTEL HELL is pure fun for fans of the genre, and in this reviewer's opinion, one of the greatest drive-in flicks of all time! The jokes are hilarious, the acting is great (particuarly Rory Calhoun, who seems to be having a blast), and the ending is absolutely brilliant (culminating in one of the greatest confessions ever to hit the screen), with a climax so jaw-dropping that you wished more films would be as bizarre as this one... Even Wolfman Jack makes an appearance!!! The transfer, although not as impressive as the one on DERANGED, is very good, and the audio is great as well. The only extra is a trailer, which unfortunately doesn't highlight the film's hilarious black-comedy.

It's amazing that both of these bizarre cult films even made it to the digital format. The missing scene in DERANGED was a bit of a let-down, but the transfers on both films are so great that it makes up for it... There's really no reason why any self-respecting genre fan should go without this disc... An Essential Purchase!

Summary: Is this over yet?
Review: I borrowed this from my friend and I'm SO SO SO glad that I didn't waste my money. Deranged is the story of Edward Gein. It was OK but Texas Chainsaw Massacre was 50 times better. However, I could still stand it better than Motel Hell. Motel Hell is maybe the most horrible movie I've ever seen. I kept looking at the clock and thinking that, "wow, I just wasted an hour and a half of my life!" Don't buy this under ANY circumstances. Rent it! Rent it and watch 'Deranged'. Do not watch Motel Hell.

Summary: OK, but... the movies are cut!
Review: I have heard that Motel Hell is cut the (Brain Spoon part) is missing! And with Deranged Also Known As: Deranged: Confessions of a Necrophile(1974) has a real Runtime of 84 min in the UK, in the USA it was cut! I have a vhs copy that is longer than the USA version with more gore! So watch out for these dvds, To bad MGM did not go the extra mile...oh well

Review: I liked it. It wasn't as good as my Boss made it sound but it
was worthy of a bag of popcorn. I will never look at cabbage
the same way again. It is not a good movie to watch alone.
I watched it alone the 4th time and I could not sleep at all
that night, but I also was having cramps so it could have been
the beans I had for supper. I just hope they don't make a movie
about me someday.
