Summary: Tries too much
Review: This movie is by no means bad, but it stood far below my expectations. My first complaint is, that it tries too much in too short time. For example : Sam Neill pointlessly cuts pieces of book covers together ( we don't see why ) and in the End, he has a map. Explaination - nowhere, he's just a genius. The whole first half of the movie you actually have to imagine the meaning of the things that are happening on the screen - where is the point in the Zombie-Cop Thing or those Bikers? Julie Carmen isn't too helpful either, she is a good actress in general but here she jumps from one pointless action into the next, all the time I wondered why her charakter is in the movie. The whole confusion gets a little bit clearer with the conversation of Sam Neill and Jürgen Pronchnow, but I was far from BEING CRAZY about this film. The second half is better, we follow Sam Neill going insane and the world with him. This is more Carpenter-like and a good viewing experience. But in general this movie relied too much on special effects and too less on a good developing story. The slimy Lovecraft creatures where quite ridicolous and unneccessary. This movie could have been much better, the plot for itself was great and the actors tried their best. But - I don't think I will see it again.

Summary: Postmodern meets H.P. Lovecraft
Review: This is definately not your typical horror movie. Based on the work of horror writer H. P. Lovecraft, John Carpenter's rendtion of In the Mouth of Madness is a mindbending experience that tests the limits of the imagination. The plot centers around a missing horror write by the name of Sutter Kane, and John Trent, an insurance investigator sent to find him. In the course of investigation Trent finds that the line between truth and fiction may not be as easy to separte as it appears. In the mouth of Madness is filled with stunning twists, surrealistic imagery, and psychological terror. asides from being a great horror movie, it is also a thought provoking lesson in postmodern horror. This is an inventive and highly original movie, one that will surprise and frighten all the way to the final curtain.

Summary: Carpenter at his best!
Review: Not since Carpenter's The Thing, has horror been this good. This film is simply a work of art and one of the last great films made in the genre. Carpenter is a master of his craft and this film is a testament that this dying genre was at one time great. Here there are no big breasted teenage girls screaming and running away from a masked killer armed with a knife. Carpenter has already done that (first and the best) with Halloween. In the Mouth of Madness is a psychological rollarcoaster which at times makes the audience question what is actually reality. Along with Carpenter's great direction, this film features a good performance from Sam Neill and some great special effects. It really is a must for horror fans.

Now on DVD this film is seen, for the first time since theaters in its original aspect ratio, 2:35/1. It also features an extremely interesting commentary with Carpenter and the Director of Photography, Gary B Kibbe.

Summary: An Strange Horror Fantasy Film From Carpenter.
Review: Sam Neill gives an Outstanding Performance in this horror film, Direct it by Carpenter and Written by Micheal Du Luca(Freddy`s Dead), who co-president of New Line Cinema. KNB Make-Up Effects are very good. Industrial Light and Magic have good Computer Graphics Imagery. There`s was few pictures in the film, i seen in a magazine, i didn`t seen in the movie, few people in different make-up effects, but the picture it impress me is a different ending, there a scene with Neill at the theatre at the end of the film, i seen in the picture Julie Carmen was With Neill looking at the film. Too Bad, there no Deleted Scenes on the DVD, but Audio Commentary from the Director and Cinetography from the film is better than nothing.

One of Carpenter`s best films and also his best as a film director.

Trivia:In The Mouth Of Madness is the last of his Apocalypse Films. The First Film is The Thing, The Second Is Prince Of Darkness and The Last is In The Mouth Of Madness. Grade:A. Panavision.

Summary: Original and visually entertaining!
Review: This is a really cool film with good plot and good special F/X. I wasn't really expecting anything good but after seeing this I soon changed my mind. John Carpenter has yet again scored. The ending to this strange tale is quite funny.

Summary: Carpenter's Tour de Force
Review: Much more than a simple horror movie, In the Mouth of Madness takes the viewer on the twisted tale of insurance fraud investigator John Trent (Sam Neill) sent to find world famous pulp horror writer Sutter Cane (Jurgen Prochnow of Das Boot, Dune). Carpenter's cinematic style reaches its pinnacle in this wild ride and his self-composed score completes the masterpiece. Full of outstanding introspective scenes juxtaposed with Carpenter's trademark wit, ITMOM delves into the core of reality and, more importantly, the perception of reality. What is reality but what the mass populus believes it to be? Sutter Cane's twisted books have become more believable than the Bible in the world of ITMOM and John Trent finds himself an unwitting pawn of Cane's warped apocalypse. A visually astounding, thought provoking movie that is not to be missed.
