Summary: The Calamityville Horror
Review: One year after a twenty three year old man goes on a rampage and murders his entire family in their sleep, a young couple (James Brolin and Margot Kidder) move into their house. They fled in terror twenty eight days later. Some effective scenes, but some things meant to be "scary" are unintentionally laughable. Very effective score, which was originally written for "The Exorcist" six years earlier and had sat unused during that time. Credibility of this haunted house story has been hotly contested for years, and the tormented family has often changed their versions of what had happened during that twenty eight days. Film is watchable despite these idiosyncrasies. Followed by a pseudo prequel that detailed the lives of the murdered family, and several other sequels that basically just capitalize on this sensation. Good campy fun, but I would take this with a grain of salt.

Review: Now, this movie, is very well made. It has everything, that a persom would want in a scary movie. I would recommend it, for vhs. I liked all of the Amityville movies. I would recommend, that if you want to get scared, rent one of these.

Review: I FIRST WATCHED THIS FILM WHEN i WAS ABOUT 5 YEARS OLD AND IT GAVE ME NIGHTMARES FOR ABOUT A WEEK. I'LL NEVER FORGET THAT MOMENT.THE DVD IS A LOT BETTER THAN THE VIDEO WITH A FAR CLEARER PICTURE AND WONDERFUL SOUND UNLIKE THE UK VIRGIN VIDEO RELEASE. THE DVD EDITION IS UNAVALIBLE IN THE UK SO WE STILL HAVE TO PUT UP WITH BAD PICTURE AND SOUND QUALITY THAT VIRGIN HAS TO OFFER.THIS IS ADEFINATE MUST DVD FOR FANS OF THE AMITYVILLE HORROR.

Review: George and Kathleen Lutz, the people who stayed at 112, Ocean Avenue, Amityville, New York, for a very brief time because they claimed they were disturbed by very supernatural causes. I will not deny that there were murders at the house because there were murders but they weren't from supernatural causes or demons. The DeFeos (the whole family except for Ronald DeFeo Jr.) were murdered by the oldest son of the family, Ronald DeFeo Jr. He is currently serving time. The Amityville community confirms that the supernatural things claimed by the Lutzs are just nothing but a hoax to get publicity recognize them. Jay Anson wrote a fake story. I wouldn't want to see a fake movie where the people say it's a true story but it's not. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!...

Summary: No Excorcist...Still just as feisty...
Review: Oh, sure ! We can all laugh at it now that most of us are adults. However, remember when you were a kid or teenager and tried to watch this when first released back in the 70's(watching it all alone in the dark no less)...Anyone who didn't feel a chill when seeing Jodi's red eyes glare and blink from outside the bedroom window has no pulse. None of the shock factors or scare tactics in this film ever reached to the proportional heights that The Excorcist did.In today's society in general and by today's movie standards, the devil just doesn't scare anymore...

Again, it was the 70's.Margot Kidder looked hot and I have no idea where James Brolin was going with the hair (his character role ?).Despite years later finding out that the entire story may have been a hoax still leaves something to the imagination if indeed there was supernatural demonic forces at play somewhere within the real home itself.

Now, 20-some years later,with dvd technology, the viewer is able to pause a lot of scenes and marvel or scoff at what was used for the special f/x sequences. Example: Pause the scene and zoom in on "Jodi's eyes";nothing more than two cheap blinking red Christmas lights. Also, the scene where George Lutz (Brolin) looks up at the house in the end and sees Jodi's eyes staring at him is another "zoom in marvel";It looks like a blow-up-close up of an actual rat,cat, or dog (could be a viscious gerbel).

Actor Rod Steiger's priestly performance is very memorable.It could be considered a little bit over-the-top at times but still credible.Actress Helen Shaver from the current supernatural-thriller series Poltergeist:The Legacy makes a guest appearance as the friend who experiences "bad vibes" from the house.

For a cheap and inexpensive Halloween treat this year rent Amityville Horror (the only one worth watching out of the entire sequels or prequels) !

Review: I live in amityville. The whole story about the young guy killing his family is totally real... but the whole amityville horror is pathetic! I know for a fact that the house isn't haunted. I've known the last 2 families that have lived there, both friends of mine, and they say there is no chance that the house is haunted. The house is a beautiful house though, but all thw windows are covered with blinds to keep all the tourists to stop from looking in!

Review: Professional movie critics LOVE to bash this movie, yet I think it's fairly well done. I liked the main characters, especially James Brolin (George), who slowly gets crankier and meaner as the film progresses. This picture has a lot of similaries to "The Shining" & "Poltergiest", though it's not as scary. The script in "Amityville" is a bit creaky at times, and I'm aware the Amityville Horror story is probably a hoax, but I still say this film deserves more respect than it gets.

Review: "The Amityville Horror" was the "true" story that emerged after George and Kathleen Lutz claimed their Long Island home was haunted by evil forces which drove them out 28 days after they moved in. Well, as everyone now knows, this was all false, thought up over a bottle of wine. Seriously. The movie was based on the book by Jay Anson, and I must say, both the book and the movie are scary! James Brolin and Margot Kidder play the unsuspecting couple who buy the house one year after a man killed his entire family there. Since the day they moved in, strange things start. The house is freezing cold, strange smells, weird noises, George has terrible mood swings, the kids are acting strange and the local priest (Rod Steiger) who comes to bless the house ends up being thrown out by a demon! I think the scariest parts of the movie are the scenes with George, and the way he slowly loses his sanity to the house until he finally snaps and the strange noises they hear and the weird dreams they have. It's these that make this a chilling movie, not blood and guts. Although I must admit, the blood oozing out of the walls and the black gunk in the toilets was gross. This movie is effective in being a thriller/suspense, but horror it isn't. I think it lost the horror a long time ago when people found out it wasn't real, but this is an effective movie nonetheless. Lalo Schifrin's rejected "Exorcist" score was also good, so good it was nominated for an Oscar. This was followed by seven sequels(!) and numerous books. Watch this one and the second one if you want the complete story.
