Review: I'm not a big Michael J. Fox fan, but I did like this one. I loved the character of Frank and Lucy. It made me sad to think that for all those years Frank blamed himself for the death of his wife. Patty and Johnny are great they are a 1990's Bonnie and Clyde. If you are a ghost lover see this one. It even has a good love story theme. It proves that people can find love again.

Review: This movie is a wild ride full of great special effects. I must admit that it starts out a bit slow but when things heat up, look out. I think that Jeffery Combs was an excellent choice for the insane FBI Agent/Nazi look alike. His character really brings in the laughs.

Summary: Worth watching
Review: The Frighteners starts off with a Ghostbusters type of atmosphere, and I think the movie would have been more successful and enjoyable if it stayed that way the whole movie instead of transition to serious horror towards the end. After all, Michael J. Fox is not the type of actor to star in a serious horror film, though his performance in the movie is excellent and probably his best. His wiseguy antics, humor, and heroism are reminiscent of his role in Back to the Future. The film should have stuck to the original formula.

Summary: A ghost film that breaks the boundaries
Review: I didn't want to see this film at first, as I thought it was just another potentially funny comedy with an original idea but ending up as completely un-entertaining. DAMN, was I wrong. When the killing spree fired up, I was well into the film. What made this even better was the characterised story behind the killings about Johnny Bartlett and the old hospital murders etc. It was very satisfying to finally see a ghost/spirit themed film which - while being serious - didn't also try to be melodramatic like' Oh no, it's the devil, we're the only ones who can save the world' crap. It was all about the characters - and I thought that was very well done. As well as which there was light-hearted comedy there too. The Full Metal Jacket (or was it Apocalypse Now?) military guy 'keeping order' in the graveyard had me in fits, and the Judge was hilarious. For the first five or ten minutes, I must admit, J. Fox was a bit sloppy in his acting. But this radically changed during the course of the film; he really slipped into the role and I was totally engaged in everything that was going on. This film has relit my respect for J. Fox and this is by far his best film. But without a doubt, my fave aspect of the film has to be Peter Jackson's direction. It was smoothly shot with loose angles, the film never looked forced in any way, and there were some superbly executed tracking shots too. The hospital sequence at the end was especially well done - I can't believe I haven't heard more of P. Jackson. This film alone made him one of my fave directors (among Gregory Hoblit, Gary Sinise and Mamoru Oshi... quite a mix, I know).

Review: this movie is just great, the special effeckts were great but the cast was the best, it was allmost like the role of Frank Bannister was written with Michael J. Fox in mind because he was perfect. The other cast was great to, Trini Alvarado was great in her part as Fox's love intrest. I highly recomend this one

Summary: mediocre popcorn
Review: I was expecting a fantastic movie here, but I was, yet again, let down. The ghosts were unfunny, but that area of the movie could have been developed into a hilarious subplot, with decent actors and better jokes. The love interest - HELLO? Why bother? She was totally unnecessary, and really pissed me of each time she was on camera. The films saving grace was Fox, and 'the baddies' who struggled to lift the film from being mediocre tosh. Never mind, watch it if you don't want to think.

Summary: Definitely not your average ghost movie
Review: Peter Jackson's The Frighteners isn't your typical ghost movie. It tries too hard to be a comedy and a horror film at the same time and that hurts it. There were only two funny scenes in the movie: Johnny Bartlett's last words and when Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox) ran down the fence again. For other attempts at humor we have ghosts who try to be funny but horribly fail. Not to mention trying to inject humor in the film with Jeffrey Combs, whom many fans of horror will recognize as the insane medical student from The Re-Animator, was a pretty bad choice. Fortunately, the film's horror moments come in and the film turns into suspense. But the movie still has some lame moments of even lamer humor, especially when Bannister dies and goes to Heaven, his ghost friends say it's not his time and just pushed him down to Earth. Corny, huh? I wished this film was a complete horror film. With comedy in it, baaad comedy, it prevented the movie from being a classic in the horror genre.

Summary: Finely crafted movie, from the script to the effects/acting.
Review: Surprising , terribly under-rated movie. The writing is first class with dynamic suspensful action sequences that weave together smoothly. Very supportive score by Danny Elfman. The effects are very well done, and add to the story without becoming the focus like too many films. Definetely see the film if you are at all a fan of fantasy or horror. Filled with comedic elements which work most of the time. So many films try to emulate a mix of horror/action and comedy but most fail to pull it off to the extent which this work does.
