Summary: Not one of the best horror movies
Review: From what a lot of people were telling me about "House on Haunted Hill," I was expecting it to be a real good movie, and in some ways I agree, and in other ways I don't agree. A man offers five people a million dollars if they can make it to the next morning in the haunted house. If some people don't make it, the people who do make it will also get those persons' checks for a million dollars. First of all, the movie has good effects, especially the beginning of the movie with the amusement park pranks. The ghosts and the killings are also well done. One thing I noticed about the people who were in the movie is that only two or three of them were good actors in the movie, the others weren't good at all. The other thing I didn't like about the movie is that if you don't see it from the beginning and pay close attention, you probably won't understand the movie that well. But for the most part, it's a decent horror movie, but not the best. I recommend anybody who likes horror movies to watch "House on Haunted Hill," but I wouldn't really recommend buying it.

Summary: Awesome!!
Review: This is one of my favorite scary movies. I purchased this DVD when I got my DVD player, I love this movie! It has cool special effects, a cool plot, and is just a great movie. I saw the original House on Haunted Hill before, and this isn't just a remake, it has lots of extra stuff, and a slightly different plot, it is an excellent movie and an excellent remake. If you buy this movie, be sure to watch it at night! :)

Summary: One of the scariest films to date. . .
Review: The original "House on Haunted Hill" was THE scariest picture of all time, and the new one ranks right under that one. The images and psychotic sounds and visuals make for the #1 wierdest movie I have ever seen.

Summary: Didn't like it.
Review: This film features quite a lot of special effects and very little suspence and few scares. There is ridiculous B movie dialogue, the characters are all relentlessly unpleasant from the start for no reason, and there isn't much of a story. I never cared what happened to anyone in this movie, and it took a real effort to resist fast forwarding through much of it.

Summary: Sure is a funky old house!
Review: A fantastic little surprise of a movie, I wasn't expecting anything when I went to see this one. After last years dissapointing and disrespectful remake of 'The Haunting', I was shocked that this movie actually seemed to take its source material seriously changing almost nothing of the original story, only adding to it a bit with truly inventive and creative ideas(for instance the fact that the house now was once an asylum for the criminally insane was a nice little touch). The movie creates a genuinly creepy, dark atmosphere and manages to mantain it through most of its length. Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush and Famke Janssen are both startlingly good if fairly low key and exude a proper air of pychosis and seem in particular to be having fun with the oft times witty and more-clever-than-I-would-have-expected shock and shlock script(shock being the gruesome horror, shlock being the dialouge, both being intentional). Bridgette Wilson and Chris Kattan are also surprising standouts, Kattan doing an unusual turn as the semi-non-comedic relief. The effects are wonderful, despite what people say(and to set the record straight there is only one CGI shot in the movie. The shot where Melissa comes out of the entity to reach for Sarah. The rest was cleverly and cheaply shot as an optical using smoke, naked women holding branches and other such bizzare things. See the director's commentary on the DVD for more info)and come nowhere near to being as laughable as the end of the 'Haunting' remake. The extras on the DVD are excellent, ranging from a comparisson of the old and new versions to deleted scenes and a fine director's commentary(I particualrly enjoyed the extra feature called the chamber. It's totally useless but a nice little touch). The gore may turn some off, and it is not for everbody. I loved it and my Dad, who is a die-hard fan of the original Vincent Price, loved it. What more can I say?

Summary: Tricky Twist on the Old Classic
Review: If you've seen the original 1959 version of this film with the peerless Vincent Price, you may be disappointed or shocked at how Robb White's original script has been updated and elaborately re-written. But overall, it is a worthy remake, with some nifty special effects and a dazzling performance by Chris Kattan as the twitchy Pritchard. Geoffrey Rush as the host of the haunted party is refreshingly tongue-in-cheek, yet emanates a nasty evil by the end of the film. Famke Jansen is amazingly stuporous, bringing little life to a role that a more talented actress could have had a field day with. I remember Carol Ohmart in the original; she was icy and cold, too, but generated much more venom that Famke does. Ari Later and Taye Biggs try, but do little more than scream and run. Peter Gallagher is effectively prim, proper, and finally, devious, but his role is not really given much screen time. The twists in this movie are effective, and you wonder all along just how much of the terrors are rigged, and how much are the house's fault. Enjoy this, but if you want to see a different approach to this script, try out the 1959 original---campy in an entirely different manner!

Summary: If you like cheap thrills & f/x, this movie is for you
Review: I think the reason why some people absolutely hate this film is because they're trying to read into it more than is necessary. It's not meant to be an intelligent thriller or thought provoking (if you want that, get a Hitchcock film). If you like cheap thrills, lots of special affects, a semi-decent plot, & Marilyn Manson music, than this movie will satisfy your $3.50 rental price. It was definitely better than "The Haunting" and had some creepy moments. I just wouldn't put it up there with the original "The Haunting", "Psycho" or "Halloween" as classic horror cinema. It was decent, but not spectacular. If you like an intelligent thriller, not as many special affects, & more realistic (which makes a horror film even more scary), then see "What Lies Beneath" with Michele Pfeifer and Harrison Ford. THAT was a CREEEPY film. It is interesting to note that "What Lies Beneath" was directed by Robert Zemekis & this movie was produced by him. Big difference!

Summary: So Bad It's Funny!
Review: Billonaire Steven Price (Geoffrey Rush) arranges a party at the abandoned Vannacutt Psychiatrist Institute for the Criminally Insane (in short, House on Haunted Hill). The Institute was once the site of the most horrifying medical experiences in history. Price announces that anyone who manages to spend an entire night in the house will win $1,000,000! He has secretly rigged the house with insidious devices designed to scare the guests out of staying, but his tricks soon become meaningless, as thr mansion begins to generate terror on its own. Before their night of terror is over, the desperate inhabitants will unlock the secrets of the house or suffer the wrath of the demonic evil that haunts the walls of the former insane asylum. House on Haunted Hill is a forgettable movie with laughable performances and a flippin' terrible script. It is equally terrible with The Haunting, 1999's other so-bad-it's-funny try-hard 1999 horror.

Summary: One of the best horror films in recent memory
Review: This overlooked film is easily one of the best in recent memory. It is quite suspenseful, and uses great camera techniques to create such suspense (similar to THE EVIL DEAD). For me, it ranks right up there with IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS and SUSPIRIA for general value. An overall great movie, with some very creative and twisted imagery. Lots of fun as well! More than worth the money to purchase.
