Summary: From the mist of cheesy slasher flicks comes Event Horizon
Review: When I saw the movie trailer for Event Horizon my jaw hit the floor. Finally, in the land of overpopulated and cheesy slasher flicks comes a real sci-fi horror. The Alien trilogy has to be my favorite of all trilogies. I worship the first movie and love the second. Sci-Fi horrors are what I love to see the most because they combine what you would expect in a sci-fi movie but with the twist of a horror. Even though Event Horizon can be compared to Alien because they both include a derelict spacecraft, they are actually quite different. In Alien the audience was meant to be scared of the actual alien itself, not the ship. Although the ship itself was quite freaky, it just had to be. The audience would then fear the Aliens even more because such a scary looking ship was their origin. In Event Horizon though its the actual vessel were meant to fear, a non-living object (so we assume...). The Event Horizon on the outside has a very similar appearance to a Klingon vessel from Star Trek. A large front hull with a narrow and long corridor connecting the ship to its end. Still, even though the Event Horizon's outside appearance isnt too striking, its what surrounds it that increases its fear factor. The atmosphere where its floating isnt exactly happy looking. Dark, gloomy looking clouds and constant lightning surround the Event Horizon. Notice how almost every time something bad happens theres an outside shot of the ship where you can see a few bolts of lightning in the background followed by thunder. Once the viewer is taken inside the ship he or she can appreciate the artistic work that was involved in designing it. The inside of Event Horizon has everything to make the audience fear it. Its dark, very quiet, lifeless, and just creepy looking. Whoever designed the "heart" of the ship where the gravitational rings are is just brilliant. The core looks simply awesome. The large dome for a room is lined with dark pointy objects. The blood on the walls and windows added a nice touch to the bridge of the ship. Again the inside appearance plays a major role in how the audience portrays the entire ship. If it looks threatening then the audience will feel unwelcome. This movie wasted no time and went straight to the good stuff. Most viewers knew what the ship was all about from the trailer atleast, so cutting right to the chase was expected. Once the crew docked onto the Event Horizon it wasnt long until bad or creepy things started happening to each one of the crew members. What I really like about this movie is Sam Neil's appearance. Hes really a natural when it comes to acting. After seeing Jurassic Park one wouldn't expect him as being violent or the "bad guy". The one movie where he played a "bad guy" role in was The Omen III. A rather bad movie when it comes to really seeing what Sam Neil's capable of. In Event Horizon hes first seen as an intelligent doctor who takes great pride in the ship he created. As the movie moves on and further reaches the end hes seen as a person of pure evil manipulated by his own creation. When Dr. Weir was missing his eyes and especially towards the end when his entire face is covered in slashes he truly looks scary. Heres a character that transforms from the commonly known "know it all" doctor to someone least expected from Sam Neil. His voice adds such an impact on the overall character of Dr. Weir. I could close my eyes and listen to him say "You cant leave, she wont let you" or "Hell is just a word, the actual place is far worse" and get a chill down my spine just by the way he sounds. I knew Sam Neil had the potential for an evil character and Event Horizon suites him perfectly. Overall I really enjoyed this movie. It satisfied my interest for sci-fi with the excitement of being scared at the same time. Forget cheesy movies about haunted houses or college kids running for their lives, Event Horizon is far better.

Summary: What an interesting flaw to hyperspacial travel
Review: This is movie starts out as stiff as Star Trek: The Next Generation, but as they near the ship we undergo a certain degree of reality where the landing or docking is messy and the eerie vision of the event horrizons space drive through Dr. Weir's eyes. The movie begins to change as it enters deeper into the strange eccentric designs and ends in a great climax of insanity that turns the story plot completely the other direction in the most strangest of endings. Sam Neil has never looked this dynamic.

Summary: Hellraiser Lost in Space
Review: The story about a search patrol looking for the lost ship Event Horizon, is not orginal, but is supported well by a strong cast of actors. The movie does borrow heavily from Hellraiser I and II, as to the gothic horror it portrays. Some of the visual effects are really terrfying(especialy if you use pause to go slowly through the fast forward, gory scenes!). I think the movie as such does what it is meant to do. It is a good scare, but not a masterpiece by any means.

Summary: Don not buy this movie
Review: This is one of the worst scifi movies I have ever seen. Overhyped, and the plot was well really non-existant. The movie had a chance to be a good one and they blew it by using everything that is able to scare people in the dumbest way. I could have been writen by anyone with a simple knowledge of science fiction and people. Thats to say anyone who has seen a scifi movie and is alive. Clasic example of how studio execs think now. Just think how many cancelled shows have been out lately. I don't even watch the pilots anymore.

Summary: It really does have some scares
Review: This would actually rate more along a 3 1/2 stars, bordering on a four, but the movie unfortunately cuts some corners just when it COULD have become a horror classic.

That said, Event Horizon has some extremely creepy scenes, building suspense, terror and violence into a wonderful mix. The plot is not terribly original, a little Alien, a little Hellraiser, and a little ghost story thrown in there to boot. What it does well, it does VERY well, and the rest it manages to wing its way through.

I have to say though, by the end of the movie the plot becomes sort of silly. If Sam Neil had not turned into a Pinhead wannabe and they didn't resort to blowing the ship up, a cliche that has been done too many times, this could have been great. I personally wanted to see what the inside of hell was like first hand by the crew aboard the spaceship, rather than just the horrific video replay (which was done very well, by the way).

I would actually like to see a sequel to this, but knowing Hollywood and the chances that a budget, script, effects and actors would all fall into place, i find it extremely unlikely that it would even be worth watching.

Summary: A dimension of pure chaos
Review: I wish I had more than five stars to give this movie. It ruled. It involves a starship, the Event Horizon, that circumvents faster than light travel by traveling through folded space via the manufacture of a black hole. The ship sails out on its test voyage, enters the black hole, and disappears. The movie actually takes place seven years later, once the Event Horizon has reappeared just beyond Neptune. A team, including the scientist that built the ship, is organized to retrieve it. Once they do, they soon realize that the ship had in fact stumbled onto hell when it entered the black hole, and now the Event Horizon is supercharged with sentient evil. The idea of a haunted ship is just a mind blower. You've got a crew, out at the end of space, bottlenecked in a ship possessed by the powers of hell. The evil influence takes their fears and secrets and creates physical demons. Another powerful element is the disembodied narrative of the Event Horizon's former crew--that kind of jounal-entry-style horror formula---a distress call with an ominous verse of Latin, and the eventual log that shows the crew turning on itself. Meanwhile, the scientist behind the Event Horizon, Wier, ignores the fact that the ship effectively murdered its former crew in favor of the ship itself. Wier becomes the easiest gateway for the evil to enter, and eventually becomes the avatar of that evil. His ultimate plan is to reopen the black hole, the gateway, and to take the ship back into hell along with everyone abaord. My only complaint with this movie was the fact that it wasn't longer. I would have liked so see a little more of the phantasma, and hear a little more as to the nature of the dark realm that possessed the ship. But, as much as I'd like to see more, I think any kind of sequel would efface the integrity of this perfect, seamless movie.

Summary: A grotesque mess...THE BOTTOM FEEDER of Sci-fi!
Review: Art direction; FX and acting...often top notch...cannot save this gratuitous mess. EVENT HORIZON revels in grotesquery and (like TITUS in another genre) insistently offends sensibilites of viewers with arch pretense. As reviewers note: 2001; ALIEN; SOLARIS; THE BLACK HOLE and other noteable sci-films are wantonly gleaned for themes of substance; then pornographically trashed in slasher over-kill. Clive Barker fans may or may not applaud ersatz HELLRAISER in hyper-space, but Sam Neill's Dr. Weir(d) closing "incarnation" of PINHEAD is pathetically laughable. Other actors, by this time, have been duly sacrificed to the indulgences of Director Paul Anderson III who seems determined to glorify himself with peculiar trappings of the Post-Modern anti-aesthetic.

Good sci-fi...which is very rare...inspires wonder. Good horror films...common enough...thrill. EVENT HORIZON is neither good sci-fi, nor good horror. It has used...apparently...vast resources to create an appearance of "class" in high-tech celebration of glamour of evil and its TEMPTATION. Perhaps, the Anti-Gravity/ space-time continuum warping Device at the core of the ship, is supposed to signify "beckoning" by newer, more Fordidden Fruit( with its promise of radical knowledge/Power in Good & Evil). To accept the latter, premises of the Judaeo/Christian mythology underpining it must be respected if not served. EVENT HORIZON respects nothing. It serves the movie Moloch of vicarious and variously twisted "jolts" while posing as entertainment (Certainly, even JA the III cannot imagine he has...like Morbius in FORBIDDEN PLANET...illuminated us concerning EVIL). I highly DO NOT RECOMMEND this film to any one...even as curiosity. My "bottom line" assessment is EVENT HORIZON wll go down as all-time BOTTOM FEEDER of science fiction......

Summary: Event Disappointment
Review: I looked forward to this movie so much. Unfortunately, Hollywood couldn't carry the concept through and it degenerated into a sci-fi slasher flick, and not even an interesting one, at that. The premise was good and had the potential for creative, eerie impact but about half-way through it seemed like the creative juices dried up. Even good actors couldn't save it. We were laughing at the end - Neill on the barbie!

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY! This is one of the few films I've ever been tempted to walk out on and ask for my money back (and this in my own home!). Thankfully, I didn't buy it but I even begrudge the rental fee.
