Rating: Summary: One of the most shocking films ever made! Review: This is the version of the film I own. This movie is about a writer from New York who escapes to connuticut for the summer to write her novel and gets sodomized and tortured by a few of the local towns people. After, Camille Keaton the movies victim and star recovers from her injuries she takes revenge on her attackers one by one. I like Director Meir Zarchi's audio commentary and it's about time he explained himself thats why I give the millinium edition of I spit on your Grave 5 stars...
Rating: Summary: Very Over-rated Rape and Slash. Review: Yes, there is realism in this flick -- the brutal gang-rape of the main character, which goes on and on until your stomach is ready to leap up and throttle your brain. I'll give it that, hence its one and only star. But that's where the realism ends. After that, it is one of the most poorly acted, far-fetched pieces of tripe you'll ever see. The reactions to the rape are completely unrealistic, and the revenge killings are so stupid and ham-fisted you'll wonder if Zarchi even bothered to think them through before rolling the camera. One victim actually walks into a noose and is hanged while being seduced by the woman he just raped. Give me a break, people. It's just too stupid to even be funny.
Attempts to justify this movie as a feminist commentary on society (somehow empowering rape victims by turning them into murderers) all fall flat. Zarchi fails where Wes Craven succeeds in "Last House on the Left" -- mostly because Zarchi missed the point in favor of shock value. His characters are flat, emotionless, and unmotivated. Therefore, we don't care if any of them live or die, which is a real shame considering the subject matter.
Watch Ingmar Bergman's "The Virgin Spring." That film shows how otherwise "good" people can be driven to acts of extreme brutality. Bergman shows us terror, desire, grief, rage, ambiguity, and transformation -- all the things that make us human. Zarchi and his lot show us a lengthy rape scene, and some lame movie blood. After seeing the subject handled so much better by others (Bergman in particular, but Craven's no slouch), Zarchi can only be taken as a cheap, exploitational insult to the intelligence of even the lowest of brows.
Rating: Summary: Great movie / watch it! Review: This is one of the most shocking movies I've ever seen. probably as shocking as Cannibal Holocaust, although totally different genres and themes. The story is about a woman who is raped beyond anything in your worst nightmares, and how she gets revenge on the guys that do it. I can't say I have seen anything like this before. I doubt many people have. I'm not gonna spoil the movie for anyone by telling you the whole story, but watch this if you want to see something out of the ordinary.
Rating: Summary: Vengence Seeks Revenge Review: Disturbing. Shocking. Repulsive. Powerful. Filmed nearly documentary style, with very little musical score, this film has a sense of urgency, of power, and of helplessness. Loosely based on a true storey (AKA: The Day of the Woman) this film was banned just about everywhere and is not for everyone. There are extremely graphic rape scenes in this film. They are so shocking that they seem real. After being brutalized, beaten, raped, and tortured (the entire first 48 minutes of the movie) she cleans herself up, and seeks revenge. What she went through, no jury would convict her. Believe me, her revenge is sweet, savage, shocking, graphic, and just desserts to her assailants. Wow! Some argue that this film exploited women. These people didn't wait until the end.
Rating: Summary: shocked by how good it was Review: when i sat down to watch this i was expecting a lot of gore done badly and even worse acting. it came as a pleasent suprise how good it was it only lost a star for a bit of a rushed ending but besides that i did enjoy it as a proper thriller and i would recommend it to a friend i think it sits above other exploit movies for it was done properly with good actors and script
Rating: Summary: not a movie you watch in the presence of other people Review: I remember first seeing " I Spit on Your Grave" twenty plus years ago when I was fifteen or sixteen years old. The video store should have never allowed me to rent it; this film deserves a stronger rating than R.
Certainly, over the years my memory had embellished the film; nonetheless, it still shocked me, today.
It is easy to forget that there are actors following a script. The film is evenly paced and unrelenting. Unlike " The Last House on the Left," there is no comic relief to remind the viewer that there is a director. One is forced to confront the brutality of rape and violence.
The actress is quite convincing and deserves recognition. The rape scenes are borderline snuff quality except for the fact the editing and directing have moments of brilliance. The men are sickening and easily hated; they are just vicious animals without any redeeming qualities, yet they are believable. Let us not forget, there are men who commit these attrocities. One can appreciate why she seeks revenge.
Without question, the rape scenes are some of the most disturbing moments in cinematic history. The castration scene is unparalleled. The special effects are just that, effective.
The DVD is an excellent package. " I Spit on Your Grave" isn't presented as a low budget film. It is art; it's not a slasher flick; it's not meant for entertainment.
Buyer beware...
