Summary: Great low-budget horror flick
Review: I get a chuckle out of many people's reaction to this movie, as opposed to Deliverance. While Deliverance had a higher budget and better acting, the plot is roughly the same - out of towner is raped by some yocals, who then pay for their crime with their lives through an act of revenge.

In this movie, viewers are more shocked that a woman is raped instead of a man. Anyone who has seen Deliverance will forever remember the words, "Squeal like a pig." Viewers of I Spit On Your Grave are not treated to the same physiological thrills; only, raw and brutal images.

I found the low-budget flick very refreshing from the usual Hollywood glitz and horror film cookie-cutter format. The plot was no worse off than, say, Friday the 13th for example. And, it was so unusual to see an abundance of gratuitous sex and violence in an American film.

Worthy of note - this film has been banned in several countries, including the UK, while Deliverance received no more than an R (18) Rating. I take this to mean that it's more socially acceptable to rape a man than a woman.

Aside from all the controversy, sex, and violence, I put it on par with Pink Flamingos. You don't need a billion dollar budget to tell a story or make a good shocker film.

Summary: so so
Review: "I Spit On Your Grave" is one of those movies that I'm not real sure if I like or not. The rape scenes were brutal, as were the victim's revenge scenes-- brutality simply isn't that big of a deal these days, so it wasn't as "shocking" as I thought it would be. The bathtub scene was a little difficult to handle-- and it happened so fast I couldn't look away. "Last House On the Left" is a much better rape/revenge movie, with a stronger plot, better acting, and a surprisingly well done soundtrack the blends awkwardly but effectively with the subject matter-- check them both and you be the judge. If senseless, lengthy, hillbilly rape scenes is what your looking for check this bad-boy out.

Summary: Attention all Joe Bob Briggs Fans!
Review: I bought this DVD for one reason and one reason only: Joe Bob Briggs. As an avid watcher of Monstervision, my Saturday nights have been dull and barren without my weekly Joe Bob fix (and yes, I know that makes me a geek and a loser -- ask me if I care!). So when I saw that he does a full-length commentary on this particular DVD, I really had no choice but to buy it. I was, of course, not disappointed with Joe Bob -- he was as incisive, informed, and funny as ever (and that's really saying something when it comes to a movie like this). As for the film itself, I found the rape scenes as brutal and offensive as anything I have ever seen...and that, again, is really saying something. The horror in this movie is that of man's inhumanity to man -- or in this case, to woman. The pain that one human being can inflict on another is what makes this movie shocking and offensive. The movie does NOT glorify rape -- quite the reverse. It shows rapists as what they are: mindless, stupid, brutal thugs. And in this movie, they get what they deserve. As I woman, I found the rape victim's revenge to be very satisfying, indeed. At the same time, however, this movie is not at all for the faint of heart. My suggestion: if you like Joe Bob, watch the movie and enjoy his commentary. If you are not a fan, choose another film.

Summary: Watch it for what it is, not what defenders want it to be...
Review: Trashy, violent exploitation thriller that continues to enjoy cult support as an underground cause celebre following its intermittent bannings - and tag as a "video nasty" - in the 1980s. Camille Keaton - reputedly a descendent of the late, great Buster (who, if so, would undoubtedly be spinning in his grave!) - plays a beautiful out-of-town novelist (...). Still traumatised by her ordeal, she proceeds to exact brutal vengeance on her attackers, through a crowd-pleasing (or revolting, depending on the limits of your tolerance) succession of violence(...). One of the first dubious classics for the home video generation. Forget the disingenuous quasi-feminist justifications of the film's following - this plays like the [illegitimate] child of Wes Craven's Last House on the Left and Abel Ferrara's Ms 45. If you're going to like it, at least like it for what it is: a no-holds barred piece of violent exploitation that earns its second star only due to is barrier-breaking filmographic place in horror exploitation cinema. Also known as Day of the Woman.

Summary: Powerful
Review: I plan on never watching this film again. So why did I give it 5 stars? Well, art can perform more than one function. It can be used to entertain, but that isn't its only purpose. Art can also be used to get across a message or hold a mirror up to society. Unfortunately, while serious books and art can treat horrible subjects with great frankness and without entertaining and still receive great praise, movies are stereotypically seen as more of an entertainment medium, so when a movie comes along that doesn't even try to be entertaining, people don't know how to react.

This movie is not in the least bit entertaining. In fact, watching it is a rather horrible experience, but it should be. Any movie that pretends to treat the subject of rape seriously should be discomforting. This movie has one of the most powerful depictions of rape I have ever seen. Other major hollywood films that have tackled the subject of rape, like the one starring Jodie Foster (I forget its name), are lauded for their powerful depictions of rape, but when a more effective, low-budget depiction like this one comes along, one that gets across the horror of the act far more powerfully, it gets dismissed as exploitation.

Sure, the cover art is rather exploitative and seems to be geared towards attracting viewers looking for sexual thrills, and the same goes for the trailer, but the film itself is not one bit as exploitative as, say, the Deliverance. It is an excellent depiction of the brutality of rape, the sexual immaturity of rapists, the cowardly nature of the act, and the fact that it is an act committed by those who usually feel powerless in everyday life. The lead female, while staying at a remote cottage in order to write a novel, is gang raped and left for dead. She starts trying to rebuild her life (her taping together of her torn up manuscript is an excellent symbolism for this), but is then discovered to still be alive by her rapists. She then kills off the rapists one by one. Perhaps not the most admirable of choices (although they did try to murder her), but the manner in which she kills each of them, playing off of their psychological weaknesses, brilliantly makes a point about the pathetic nature of rapists.

All praise aside, it IS a disturbing movie to watch and one I hope nobody will find entertaining, and as a result I don't plan on watching it again. Once is enough. But that makes this great art.

Review: movies like this shouldn't be made, it is just wrong. the rape sceens are just wrong, but for a slasher flick, the rest is below average. dont even read anymore cuz it got more time than it deserves

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: You have to be disturbed to enjoy this movie!
Review: Im not going to lie to you, but you do have to be slightly disturbed and/or sick to actually enjoy this movie. What can be enjoyable about watching a girl getting gang raped numerous times? And to say this is not worse than the likes of Deliverance is insane. Yes, there is a male rape scene in Deliverance, which again was not at all enjoyable to watch and i shall not be watching again, but the scene in that movie is far shorter and far less graphic than the rape scenes in I Spit On Your Grave. So basically, if you have any sanity and/or morals you will not enjoy this movie as there is absolutely nothing in the movie to enjoy.
