Summary: Full screen?!! Are they insane?
Review: Can someone please illuminate me on this perplexing situation? I'd heard that this was to be a Kubrick-approved collection of his films on DVD. Is it possible he decided to have it released full-screen? Is this just penny-pinching by Warner execs who took the scan off some old Laserdisc edition of the flick? Was the top and bottom of the film cropped to create a wider aspect ratio for theatrical release? Or is this just an unfortunate typo by Amazon.com?

Unless the cropping scenario is true or this turns out to be just a typo or miscommunication on Amazon.com's part, I'll save my cash and live with my memory of the film as I originally saw it(okay, I saw it full-screen on videotape the first time -- I was one when it was originally released in theaters -- but memory makes great films widescreen in retrospect).

Any information pertaining to these questions would be delightful.

Summary: King adaptation gone slightly awry
Review: I've just done a review for Blade Runner and said it was from a book written by Stanley Kubrick...whoops.

Anyhow. The Shining. I do like this film. I think it scared me sensless first time I watched it, so top marks for that. Duvall and Nicholson play so well, both human characters with their flaws (okay, Jack's a bit more flawed than most). It really drags you in, the entire claustrophobia of it all, spun against a background of snow and ice (archetypal good things).

I drop it a star purely from beligerance against the novel adaptation. You cannot enjoy King films once you've read the books - or at least not to the same extent. Try it if you haven't - you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Oh yeah - one more thing. I can't watch the 'Here's Jack' bit anymore without seeing Homer Simpson fluff it three times in 'The Simpsons' version of this - 'The Shinning' (Quote Bart 'Don't you mean Shining'? Willie: 'Shhh! Do you want the coprighters to hear you? If your in trouble, just call me with that shin of yours...')

Summary: Fans can finally see the documentary "making of the Shining
Review: "This edition comprises the movie, its theatrical trailer, and the famous and rare 30-minute documentary "the Making of The Shining", by Vivian Kubrick, Stanley's daughter. This documentary is perhaps the only oportunity to see Kubrick at work, and it has wonderful moments, like when Scatman Crothers (the Cook who talks to Jack's son, Danny) brakes down and burst into tears when asked about his work in the movie, saying "I'll never forget this, if you see tears, they would be tears of JOY"!.This movie is a legend in film history, specially due to kubrick's "takes to the limit" philosophy, wich demanded sometimes 180 takes of the same scene. I believe that what he inteded was to make the actor a bit crazy, wich is exactly what their parts demanded. Saying 180 times the same lines under enormous pressure is an efficient way of getting weird responses from an actor. This was one of the first movies to use the Steadycam, and has some incredible scenes using it. Jack nicholson's performance is just perfect, and Shelley Duvall, fragile and histerical, makes the ideal counterpoint.

Summary: Best horror movie ever
Review: With great actors like Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall on his team, Kubrick has created one of the scariest movies ever, and, by my opinion, it is the best horror-movie ever made. It is the story of a writer who, with his family, takes a winter job as caretaker of a hotel in the mountains. A place where bad things have happened before, and may happen again. Especially when you have a psychic son...

Summary: Stanley Kubricks epic nightmare of a haunted hotel.
Review: The shining is one of Stanley Kubricks finest:A creepy tale of madness in a snowed in hotel in the rockies. The Jack Nicholson role as the ex-boozer gone-im-a-psycho-so-watch-me-chop-up-cooks-and-talk-to-imaginary-waiters- is a strong role.Oh yes its also Nicholsons most deranged role.Shelly Duvall gives yet another wide-eyed performance. This was based on Steven Kings book...but if you want king read it.Kubrick went to far away from it and created something extremly creepy. This is another masterpeice by Kubrick.I love it.It really is the ultimate ghost story.

Summary: Jack Torrance is willing to kill for the Overlook hotel
Review: Psycho, X-heavy drinker, Jack Torrance is possessed by his obsessive love for the hotel he is the caretaker for over the winter, the Overlook. Shelly Duvall his wife has a paranoid personality, which drives this poor man off the edge. His son played by Danny Lloyd, a child prodigy with ESP doesn't help Jack's mental problems, in fact, this is what causes most of them. Over all I think this is the best movie ever made, go see it unless you are "stomach easy," and are scared of insane men running around with axes chopping through doors and drinking imaginary liquor.

Summary: Chilling
Review: I challenge anyone to watch this film alone at night. The images (Grady girls, closeup of Danny's face in a silent scream) will set themselves in your mind forever. Nothing really violent here, just the steady presentation of one frightening image after another, until a nerve-wrecking conclusion. This film keeps you thinking desperately.."Oh God, what's going to happen next?"
