Summary: Shoody and the gore has lost its impact
Review: "~Clearly inspired by Witchfinder General (aka: The Conqueror Worm), this German excise in early 70's sadism has Herbert Lom as an impotent witchhunter overseeing the torture of (largely) women until the peasants revolt. Also with Udo Kier (of Andy Warhol's Dracula and Frankenstein fame) as the young hero and the great Reggie Nalder as an evil minor witchhunter who gets killed half-way through by Lom in a impotent rage."~ context of revolutionary England here we have some unspecified middle-European town and most of the film is an excuse to show allegedly shocking scenes of torture which now look pretty tame. The principal gore scenes are a topless woman being branded, a tongue being ripped out by a very strange device, and a thumb being severed in a squashing device (NB: all of these scenes are cut in the UK certificated video)."~ but an exercise in sex and sadism and a poorly dubbed, staged (the peasants revolt at the end is pretty poorly constructed) and acted one as well. Plotline is not very credible either (would Kier's baron really fall for a tavern wench ? )."~

Summary: Gore Feast
Review: I saw this film in the theater in 1973. It was advertised banned in 36 countries. They handed you a barf bag when you walked in. If the film didnt make you vomit the smell inside the theater would. Watch if if you like this thing. Campy, gross and sexy all at the same time.

Summary: Just as shocking now as it was in the early 70's!
Review: I saw this movie as a child at the drive-in with some relatives. We were suppose to be seeing a Disney film I can't remember. This film gave me nightmares for years. The torture scenes are shocking to this day, and Reggie Nalder plays as evil a person that has ever been on film. The plot is shallow, but nevertheless, it is horrific. Also, at the drive in, they handed out vomit bags to people when you paid to get in.

Summary: Re-review of a Good Horror
Review: I saw this movie back in the 70's and I was around ten years old (not trying to tell my age) I remember oh-so well when I walked in they gave me a barf bag...thinking what did I need this for. Saw alot of torturing scenes, can't wait to view them again as an adult. I will love to Re-review after seeing this movie again. Stand by horror movie lovers.

Summary: Is this any way to treat a Witch?
Review: I saw this movie several years ago with a friend who owned the film. The film was disturbing to us, being women and the fact that we follow the same religion that people were burned at the stake for. Most, if not all of the implements used on the women {and men}in the film were exact copies of what was actually used. The Iron Maiden, the thumb/toe press, impaling, the head cage {sometimes with hungry rats inside}, pulling out of one's tongue {mainly used because of blasphemy} were all used to get an admission of bowing down before {and bedding with} the Devil. After seeing the film, I must admit I had a dim view of the male species for few days, as this film brought to light that part of history when women were thought to not have souls, were considered property, and died needlessly. All in all.. the film was a bit campy, disturbing, but worth taking a look.

Summary: Truly Revolting
Review: I saw this one in a discount movie house some time after itsinitial release, so the barf bag promised in the ad was no longergiven out. An ominous circumstance, as it turned out.

The film--as I recall--was quite well done. Too well done, in fact. The story concerns a medieval witchhunter, a wretched old man who travels from town to town. At each stop, he attempts to seduce the local lovelies. If they resist, he accuses them of being witches and they are tortured until they confess, then burned to death.

Among other things, the tortures include poking a long needle through a freckle or birthmark (the mark of the devil) to see if the girl bleeds, thus proving her innocence.

Anyway, about halfway through the film, after seeing a number of these disturbingly realistic scenes, I felt my bile urging itself upward. I fought to maintain control. Then there came a scene where a girl's head was locked into some sort of cage that held her mouth wide open. The witchhunter tore out her tongue with tongs and held the disgusting, bloody thing before the camera. That was all I could take. [...] And, yes, being a resilient teen, I went back to finish the movie. What, sit alone in the lobby with my buds inside?

This is an unconventional review, I realize, but it might tell you everything you need to know about "Mark of the Devil."

Summary: I was there in 1972
Review: I was 12 when I saw this in my hometown theater. I did, in fact, receive a barf bag. The film was such a local sensation, especially among the teens, that the crowd at the sold-out opening surged at the ticket office, sending a guy through a plate-glass window. I have to say, at 12 years old, the film was pretty cool...it was so fake, but at the same time I was covering my eyes and squinting at the screen in a total gross-out experience. It was great! This film was obviously produced specifically for kids. Kids often have a better grip on reality than adults in the first place anyway.

Sorry, people didn't find my initial review helpful. Ok. Here are some helpful highlights from "Mark of the Devil:"
1. Bare-bottomed torture on a seat of nails.
2. Beheading
3. Stabbings with long sharp needles
4. Extracting a woman's tongue and holding it up to the camera for a closeup
5. Stretching on the rack
6. Thumbscrews
7. Branding with hot irons

Don't miss it!
