Summary: Extremely Excellent

Summary: "Whatever Walks here, walks alone"
Review: This is the ultimate haunted house movie. There are no special effects, and THE HAUNTING scared the hell out of me. All of the psychological nuances of Shirley Jackson's novel are here, raising the questions, "Is Eleanor insane and imagining the haunting?" or "Is the house trying to use Eleanor?" The answers to these questions are made mind shatteringly clear in the conclusion, which lets us know that if Hill House wasn't haunted before, it is now. A doctor brings two psychics and a skeptic to the century old Hill House, which has a reputation "haunted" with murder, insanity, and suicide. Something is thundering outside of Eleanor and Theodora's door, but what is it? We never see what it is, but you can use your imagination to create the horrors behind the door. "Nothing in Hill House moves until you turn away. Then you see something out of the corner of your eye....." For truly terrifying scares that remain unseen, turn out all the lights and watch THE HAUNTING. First rate acting by all.

Summary: The Haunting is Perfect
Review: Robert Wise topped himself with this chilling, atmospheric masterpiece. If you like slumbering, creepy haunted house movies this should be on your list.

Summary: The Greatest Supernatural Movie, Bar None!
Review: I can say with all honesty that this is the first and only horror film to make me lose an entire night's sleep! I considered myself a jaded horror film veteran impervious to theatrical scares until I watched "The Haunting." This film is one of the few cases where the film version surpasses the book it is based upon. The psychological implications of this film are devastating, and are some of the film's great strengths. The acting is superb all-around, especially the inimitable Julie Harris, in her best role as the doomed Eleanor. One former complaint comes to mind with the "miscasting" of Russ Tamblyn as the playboy, Luke: At first I thought his hammy performance to be the film's only liability; now I've come to realize - after repeated viewings - that Tamblyn played Luke perfectly, as a narcissist without an ounce of introspection who reluctantly accepts the presence of the supernatural in his future home. Tamblyn's character is the only one with the good sense to suggest they all get the hell out of there when the supernatural events turn ugly. Each of the film's characters is well-played by an outstanding cast of old pros who treat the material seriously. There are too many deliciously creepy scenes to fully list, but the door-breathing scene and Eleanor's hand-holding scene are two of the most frightening sequences ever filmed. Do NOT watch this movie alone!

Summary: The Perfect Scare!
Review: Four people investigate a supposedly haunted house and discover the terror which has been cast over the house for almost 100 years. Slow starting but very creepy thriller is somewhat dated, but still manages to keep you riveted with hardly any special effects ( I wish they remembered that while doing the remake).

Summary: scared of the dark?
Review: Well I don't normally write film reviews but I've never been so enthusiastic about a film - Tha Haunting will scare the hell out of you.Personally sick of special effects and big name actors I have spent a lot of time trawling through old horror movies, some poor some good but I never realised how effective old black and white horror could be till I discovered this film. The acting is a bit stale, especially at the beginning with very unconvincing dialogue, but once the atmosphere kicks in you discover what this film is really about. With no special effects all the talent lies in the fantastic camera work combined with intelligent use of sound. The Haunting involves you like few other horror films because it relies on your own imagination.

Pretty special effects are all nice eyecandy but thats the point - horror ain't supposed to be pretty.

Special effects make you go "wow" not "aarrgghh! "

Summary: NOTHING like the new one, a TSM for sure, SEE IT!
Review: This is a big psychological thriller and will leave you pretty creeped out. Nothing at all like the new version, 100 times better. It'll leave you up at night, watching, scared. At the top of my TSM list. SEE IT NOW!

Summary: My Favorite Suspense Title!
Review: The classic ghost story. Unlike the remake, which relied too much on special effects, this version enthralls the viewer into the action, characters, and plot (it actually has one unlike the remake!). I've seen it many, many times.

Summary: Interesting but dated
Review: This black and white film, as others have noted, is really a psychological story more than a horror film. (The new in-your-face remake failed to acknowledge this fact.) The plot is simple: some people stay in a scary house to see if it's really haunted. The story builds slowly, and for full effect must be watched without interruption in a quiet room in the dark. Then it can envelope you to the point where it feels rather frightening. Otherwise, it is possible to get impatient with the constant thinking-out-loud patter coming from Julie Harris and the intrusive camera angling obviously intended to heighten our emotions. This film will probably appeal greatly to those people who think The Blair Witch Project is scary.

Summary: You won't be able to sleep for a week.
Review: If you want a good halloween movie or just a plain movie to scare you, then The Haunting is the movie for you. This movie has all it needs to make you scared. You have to watch this movie ALONE and at NIGHT. Then when you are ready to sleep, it will make you think that your house is haunted. This movie is great.
