Summary: The Rise and Fall of Disco 2000
Review: Macaully Culking never comes close to the real Micahel Alig. The real Micahel Alig was creepy and hollow. That aside, this movie tries to capture the color and mayhem of the Club Kid Era. (For those that were around then, well, nothing will ever come close.) Seth Green steals the movie as James St. James, Aligs foil and confidant. The movie leads up to the murder of Micahel Melendez, aka Angel, a drug dealer to the "A-List" in Club Land. His gruesome murder is glossed over with the bare details. Alig is made a little bit more "straighter" in this film by giving him a sexaul relationship with a girl. As if. Based on teh book, Disco Bloodbath. Marilyn Manson makes an appearance as the the transgendered Christina, who was a scarier queen than Marilyn could ever be.

Summary: This movie ROCKED
Review: This movie stank. And by stank, I mean it just didn't work. And by it just didn't work, I mean it just didn't work.
The selection of actors was absolutely horrible. To have Macaulay Culkin, who you may remember from Home Alone portray a drug-addicted party monster is wrong. Just wrong. He recited his lines like a child does in his school play. His gay pronunciation of words was so unconvincing. And let's not forget Wilmer Valderamma, who seems to have the same expression, same tone of voice, same enthusiasm throughout the entire movie. Seth Green was too rugged to play the part of James St. James and Angel....oh Angel. Did they get this guy from American Idol? He simply cannot act. I was actually quite glad and excited that he died in the movie, although I wished it was done earlier and in a more brutal way. The script was dull, the actors were so transparent and the acting was the pits. I was so upset to see this movie flop as I am interested in Michael Alig and the Club Kids. I didn't think I would say this, but Marilyn Manson's scenes were actually pretty good. Those 37 seconds.
Let's just say, it could have been a lot better.

Summary: Seth Green steals the show
Review: I think that Culkin was horrible in his role. Seth Green is the man who stole the show. There was just something about the story that makes you want to dig a little deeper. I liked this movie because it was different and was somewhat based on Michael Alig's life.

Summary: Great flick!
Review: I absolutely adore this film! While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, I think this is a well put together interpretation of James St. James' novel "Disco Bloodbath." If you haven't read the book, I recommend doing so. It is an acid trip in itself. I saw a 20/20 episode discussing the movie and was intrigued. I finally got to watch the movie and was shocked and slightly disturbed the first time I watched it. The beginning is excellent. Its light and airy and pulls you into the fast, colorful world of the Club Kids. Then, the film turns dark quickly as drugs take over the main characters lives. The end is quick and I believe the murder scene is well filmed. I believe that the actors were well chosen and Mak does a wonderful job portraying Michael Alig. Seth Green as James St. James is halarious. If you read "Disco Bloodbath" you get a better understanding of James and Seth's interpretion is on the mark.

All in all, this film is excellent if you are interested in Club culture at all, or enjoy interesting movies that are not necessarily the norm. I love this movie; its one of my favorites. I've shown it to all my friends (college kids) and they love it as well. I have not heard one person I've shown it to (with an open mind) say they did not like it.

Highly recommended to RENT FIRST!
The book and soundtrack are also highly recommended.

Summary: mixed feelings
Review: Whether the fault of the script, acting, direction or a combination of all three, I found myself equally irritated as some other viewers, wanting to turn the movie off before it even really got started. Much of the dialogue and character interaction was very simplistic, void of dimension. I felt the whole of the story would have been better set on stage than the big screen.

However, I do agree with other reviews that while the performances may seem plastic, that is exactly what the lifestyle is and was about. In that way, the movie is right on target. From the perspective of someone who has seen the inside of the club-kid world and known people like Alig and James St. James, it was actually somewhat disturbing. I had much the same feeling the first time I saw Spun.

Would I watch it again, NO!...though I will buy the soundtrack.

Bottom line, if you want to get a good idea of what the club-kid scene and lifestyle is all about, rent, don't buy the movie. If you are hoping for any sort of meaning, depth or even a detailed how and why of the actual murder...get the shockumentary or read the book.
