Summary: EXCELLENT MUSIC AND 70'S KITSCH
Review: Don't expect a fully comprehensible plot, or that you're going to become well-acquainted with the characters, who stay as ambiguous as their respective sexualities. What you will get is an amazingly alluring portrait of glam-era London and some great music (any movie that kicks off with Eno's great "Needles in the Camel's Eye" deserves special praise). Ewan MacGregor is smashing as the Kurt Cobain-Iggy Pop hybrid Curt Wild. MacGregor and Christian Bale have a sex scene, imagine that! "Velvet Goldmine" is shallow, but nevertheless great fun.

Review: all i can say is that the costumes were AWESOME..a valiant tribute to the era of glam..(that's still beats in the hearts of all of us) very interesting characters and worth the watching..did i mention the COSTUMES?

Summary: Beatiful fantasy of glitter and freedom
Review: Two years after its original release, I got to see Velvet Goldmine. I had heard mixed reviwes, all confusing and missing the point: this is NOT the story of David Bowie on his Ziggy years. Is it based on those times? yes, that should be quite obvious, but this is not a biography, so don't complain about lack of historical accuracy. It's the slightly confusing tale of a glam-rock star, his dissapearence, the people he was with and the whole scene that surrounded him. But you shouldn't ignore that it's also about personal freedom: you choose who you are. I saw it two times on the cinema. The first time I left the place dizzy with all I had seen. The second time, I managed to follow the story, catch the plot and really appreciate the wonderful acting. Needless to say, I ordered it right away. Don't let the "plot twists" and "gay" complaints scare you. Jonathan Rhys-Myers and Ewan Mc Gregor's characters do kiss, but it's must be one of the most beatiful, tender kisses ever seen on a movie. Give it a chance, maybe you'll convert to glam like I did (and the friend I forced to go with me under the infallible "let's go and see Ewan" excuse).

Summary: Maxwell Leather Demon Luck Hand Jive...
Review: I loved it. No, not just because Jonathan was wearing thoselovely velvet trousers ;) Both Brian and Curt were excellentcharacters, and lets not forget Mandy, Arthur etc. The music is addictive - most people I know who have been to see this movie have ended buying the soundtrack. This movie is *well* worth seeing, for the music, for the acting, for the men, all of these things ;)

Summary: Great movie, I just ordered the DVD!
Review: I grew up with glam rock, and I've been a fan since I bought that first T. Rex record way back then. This movie, which essentially mirrors the life of David Bowie, and his affair with Iggy Pop (although, they've changed the names to protect the guilty...but we all know who they modeled the characters after) is a great step back in time to the days of glam in England. There are the gratuitous sex scenes (of various lifestyles) and the drug use that defined the era...but more than that, there's the music. This movie has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. I've been listening to my old Bowie, Iggy and Eno albums ever since. This one is the newest addistion to my growing DVD collection...and I can't wait to own it, and watch it again.

Review: Glitter rock was a short-lived phenomenon that still reverberates in music. Where would punk have been without ripping off glitter's hairstyles & nihilist attitude? Where would radio have been if glam hadn't killed off the bloated art-rock symphonies of the late 60's? And where would every rock band in the 70's thru 80's have been without the satin, flash, theatrics & drugs that came with glitter... Yes, boys and girls, you too can relive those thrilling days of 1972 when you watch "Velvet Goldmine". Anyone who has read Angie Bowie's book "Backstage Passes" will recognise many of the characters and situations depicted here. Obviously Brian Slade is meant to be David Bowie; altho Ewan MacGregor's character of Curt Wilde is a composite of Iggy Pop & Lou Reed, it seems as if he's channeling the spirit of Kurt Cobain (his performance will send chills down your spine). Overlooked by most reviewers is the character of Jack Fairy who is based on Brian Eno, & who, just as in "reality" is backstage creating the fantasia. Of course Toni Collette (Mandy Slade/ Angie Bowie) delivers another knockout performance as does Christian Bale as Arthur. And don't miss the boys who play the band Propaganda & give Arthur a room-great band! The music is fab, the clothes are outrageous, the in-jokes are there for both movie buffs (Todd Haynes does a self-referential bit that only those familiar with his early work will get) & music fans (the original drummer for Iggy's Stooges plays the drummer for the Wilde Ratz), really I only have one quibble with this movie... I think there should be more than 10 years elapsed between the flashbacks & Arthur's reality. Personally, I feel the sense of loss & nostalgia would have worked better with a gap of 25 years, but watch it for yourself & see if you agree. "Velvet Goldmine" is really quite paradise for those who were there or for those who wish they had been...

Summary: See this movie!
Review: Some die-hard Bowie fans have criticized this film for not being historically accurate, or focusing too much on one aspect of his broad career. Well let me say first of all that this movie is not intended to be a documentary. Its plot is not a historical account, just a beautiful story very VERY loosely based on the Ziggy Stardust story. Those who disregard it as being inaccurate should remember that glam-rock was all about imagination and creativity. "Although what you are about to see is a work of fiction, it should nevertheless be played at maximum volume." Arthur Stuart's character was one of the most interesting in the whole movie. His flashbacks to his adolescence are something that most of us can relate to. The story of his teenage adoration of the icons of the day - Brian Slade, Curt Wylde, the Flaming Creatures - is clearly told from a knowing point of view. This film is pure nostalgia, and pure genius. The story is told so incredibly well and set to such an amazing soundtrack, I don't know how I could rate it anything less than the best movie this glitter-ette has ever seen.

Review: The only reason I saw this film was because one of my best friends is a raging Ewan McGregor fan. If you don't feel comfortable with some homosexual moments, you'll squirm through this movie, but if you're more open minded, you'll love it. This movie has an incredible soundtrack, songs that will get stuck in your head, but you won't mind. So far I've rented this movie approximately 25 times, so I'm glad the cheaper version is coming out April 4, 2000. If you are solely seeing the movie for Ewan, you might be a little disappointed, he isn't in it as much as he could be, and in the end he looks distressingly like Kurt Cobain, but he's still a hottie. BTW, Jonathan Rhys Myers is really impressive in this movie, an inexperienced 19 year old actor who pulled his character into shape fabulously.

Summary: still left with glitter floating around
Review: Velvet Goldmine stunned me in several ways when I first saw it, over a year ago. Since then, I have waited impatiently for it to come out on VHS (april 4) and have rented it several times. This movie is different than any other I've seen. Velvet Goldmine has beautiful visual images, perfect musical soundtrack, emotional acting, imagination, intelligence... Trying to impart the Velvet Goldmine experience through a rating isn't fair. For those who didn't like it, I can only assume that they are blind, deaf, or bitter ex-glam rock stars. You don't watch this film once--it stays with you. Every Oscar Wilde reference, every graceful movement, every color, every look, remain in your mind. See this, whether your best friend's aunt liked it or not. "The world has changed because you are made of ivory and gold. The curves of your lips rewrite history."
