Summary: Clearing up some issues - This is a great DVD player
Review: I bought this player (Gold colored) 2 years ago. I liked it so much that I just bought the Black one a week ago for another room in the house. The reason why, it is simply an extremely well engineered piece of equipment. Superb audio and video output period. I have found that this unit has the best zoom (more than just 3 or 4 zoom levels) and more levels of forward and backward speeds (useful when searching through a chapter on a DVD and you don't want to miss it by going too fast, and don't want to wait forever by going too slow) than any other unit I have tested or looked at.The remote is one of the best I have ever used, and I find it very intuitive and easy to use. The user's manual is great as well. I also liked that it came with a component video cable and I didn't have to purchase one separately. If you plan to use this unit primarily as a DVD player and are likely to have "marathon" DVD sessions, this unit is superb. I often have a mix of several 2 disc DVD's and some audio CD's in the unit and love having the 7 disc capacity to be able to do this. Some of the negative reviews here have bothered me because they seem to come from some ignorant viewpoints. I would like to address those for those of you considering this unit. Noise while changing disks: For those who complain about noise while changing a disc, you should probably have gone in to your local Best Buy or other electronics store and viewed a floor model. When you see and understand the mechanical method used you will understand why there is "some" noise while it changes discs. I, for one, do not find this disturbing at all. To get a 7 disc changer in the space of 5, and from an engineering standpoint, I find JVC's method rather ingenious. I tell you, don't let a little noise when it changes discs to dissuade you from buying this unit. This unit makes absolutley NO NOISE (other than the intended audio from the media being played) when playing. Flashing light for current disc being played: The light that flashes for the current disc being played HAS NEVER BEEN an issue for me. I don't have ADHD either though, so I am able to stay engrossed enough in the movie I am watching that I HAVE NEVER NOTICED OR BEEN DISTRACTED by the flashing light (even in a darkened room!), so don't let this dissuade you from buying this unit. GET A LIFE (or some Ritalin) IF THIS BOTHERS YOU! Note that JVC sells and markets this first and foremost as a DVD player, albeit one that can play a wide variety of formats. For those of you who want more of a "pure" CD player because you will be mostly playing CD's and want a "true" random play setting, GO BUY A DEDICATED CD PLAYER! Same goes for those of you who plan to use a DVD player to mostly show your photos, if the photo load times bother you, then go buy a dedicated device whose main function is to do that. JVC has added those as a convenience, but it isn't the main purpose of this player. For most people this unit will do a fine job of replacing your CD player as well. For the reviewer who had several disks get jammed, etc... my 2 year old unit has NEVER jammed and I don't find the unit to be "prone" to jamming whatsoever and I use it quite frequently and often am changing discs while one is playing. I suspect that any jamming that occurs is more related to problems with the "user" than the unit. I am sure impatience and not seating a disc correctly will cause jams in ANY multi-player unit. Some reviewers have complained about the DVD-Audio connections/confusion. Had you thoroughly researched before your purchase, you would have found the answer to this. If you go to the JVC website (as I did, and I do for ANY manufacturer of equipment that I am thinking of buying), you would have found this info. To sum it up, this unit has been superbly reliable in the time I have owned it (which is why I bought a 2nd one). It has superb audio and video output. I recommend this to anyone looking for a multi-disc DVD player (with the ability to play CD's and the other formats it lists).

Summary: Bad JVC Customer Service
Review: I bought this unit as a Xmas gift for my wife. Out of the box we have had problems. The system crashes, hangs and freezes on DVDs MP3 and other formats. The user manual is terrible and after 2 weeks of frustration we tried to return the unit (to JVC). JVC has a policy that if the unit is over 30 days old they will not return the product. As I bough this gift in November, my only option is to have it repaired. The unit has now been in the shop for over 2 weeks as they try to "get parts", "new chips" and "reload the firmware" whatever that means. This will be the last JVC product I purchase. Buy a product from a vendor who stands behinds their equipment. If you've ever wondered where the "refurbished" units come from... I suspect that mine will be soon added to that pile.

Summary: Powerful and Plentyfull...
Review: I had bought the XV-fa900bk to replace an older player that I had that was on the way out, and WOW what a difference.. The sound quality is amazing and picture quality was an even greater gain. The sounds in more crisp and clear with less background and white noises. The picture is razor sharp and much more fluid with absolutly no pixiling like my previous player would. Additionally on some DVDs that my old player would skip on this one can handle, and make look great on a regular TV. I brought it to a friend that has a Widescreen HD TV and their was nothing but pure joy, the picture was even better because I could use the composite inputs. I saw no notice of flicker on the borders or anywhere in the frame itself. I am happy and will return to JVC again. BTW, previous players were sony and klh, both non-progressive scan, and now no turning back...

Summary: No random play across all discs, flashing lights not for me
Review: I had this unit for one day before I returned it. I thought a carousel would be great for mixing up a variety of music cds. I'm not into the multiple movies, but mixing them would be fun. However, I learned thru the thick manual that the random play only works on the active disc, not thru all seven. Thats when I started packing it up. It had a few other quirks, too. There are seven lights across the front to represent the discs, the one playing flashes continuously during play. Not very nice in the dark during a movie. The mp3 play is ok if you have the tv on to read the titles, but nothing fancy. I like JVC quality and it is probably a good unit if these issues don't bother you.

I tested with various types of discs, CDR/W, JPEG, DVD-R's which I burned, audio cds and not to mention DVD movies and all worked fine. I especially like the 3D Phonic sound function. Some complain that the machine is noisy, there might be some noise but it is not excessive. As for the flashing light which some complain about which lets you know which disc is playing at the time being bothersome, it really is not. After all, you are looking at the tv screen and you should not be looking at the dvd player anyway!!! The picture quality is great and also the JPEG picture quality is amazing!! I saw detail that I had never saw before, it might take 25 to 30 seconds to load the photo which is really not alot but the detail is truly amazing!! This is really a good player which I would recommend in the silver color because silver gives it a sleek, space-age look rather than the same old tired black. Don't be afraid of this player, try it you will like it!!! I have not tried the dvd audio feature of this machine but if that is as good as all the other features I am sure I will like that too!

Summary: Superb player in all respects. FIVE STARS!
Review: I purchased this gem about a month ago. The rating on Amazon sort of made me hesitate, but I bought the unit anyway. I'm so glad that I purchased this fine DVD player. I won't get technical, but will just say that all the special features on the 7-disc player have worked flawlessly-- without exception. The picture and sound quality are outstanding. The only minor complaint I might have about this DVD player, is the strobe special effect. Instead of having the picture remain at a normal size during the strobe effect, it is broken down into 9 small rectangular pictures and the strobe effect moves from picture to picture. Considering all the nice and easy to use features available in the XV-FA900BK, this is hardly worth mentioning. I spend a lot of time viewing DVDs, and this unit has had no problems, but has functioned with perfect reliability since the day I connected it. It's interesting to mention also, that previously hard to read VCDs and DVDs, play without error on this machine. I feel this 7-disc player is a sound investment, especially if you like to flip through several movies without having to leave your chair.*************3+ months and still counting: There have been no problems with this gem from JVC. Noise may be a problem for some, but I say, again, that this is not worth mentioning. With no exceptions-- this unit is well worth every bit of the price and more. If you use customer feedback as your only guideline for choices in makeing a purchase, then perhaps this should not be your choice. If, however, you can read between the lines, then you may wish to check out this player. Enough said.

Summary: Avoid This Unit
Review: I purchased this unit expecting it to be a replacement for my CD player and my DVD player - no such luck. Instead of working like a multi-disc carousel changer (as do most CD changers), this works as a series of fins that hold each individual disk - it's very poorly designed. Loading the disks takes much more time than a simple carousel does, and changing disks is slow and loud. Since all the disks are individually held in the unit, some spin differently than others - causing some to make very distracting noises when they're playing, or noot play at all if they're not seated properly. I would highly recommend steering clear of this unit - my guess is that because of the mechanics involved, this unit will break down much sooner than the other units that are available.
