Summary: Good Player - Great Value - Missing Basic Features
Review: I read the reviews and decided to get this player. I am really happy with it overall and would recommend it for someone who is on a budget but wants a solid unit. If you are really picky or expect the best, this player is not for you. There is one major thing I found lacking about this unit. When it finishes playing a given disk, it does not automatically move to the next one. This seems like a basic function for a disk changer? Not on this unit. I've gotten over it and have been enjoying the item. This is my first DVD player and I had a beaten up diskman attached to my stero for audio. So for me, this is a huge improvement. It was really easy to hook up and works great. Good player if you are on a budget or just don't think you need top of the line. It gets the job done, but not with style.

Summary: Is it just my bad luck??
Review: Well, I would have tried a third time to get a working player, but Amazon.com has informed me that they are hesitant to send another since they seem to be encountering problems with this particular player.

1st shipment:
Although it would play cds, it wouldn't recognize any of the 5 dvd's I put in it.

Replacement shipment:
Upon opening the box, imagine my suprise to find the carousel door a bit open. I was hopeful that plugging it in and cycling it open and closed would fix that problem. No luck.

I have to say that Amazon.com has been very apologetic and courteous about the whole thing. From the other reviews, it looks like I might have thought this a good player if I would have gotten a working one.

Now the big question... Should I stay away from the Toshiba SD2815?

Summary: Great first DVD player
Review: This unit is my first DVD player and will double as a CD player for
my home theater system. Has a beautiful picture and has worked
great. I do not have a CD burner so I won't be using the other
formats. I have rented several movies that have multiple disks so
the ability to store multiple disks is a plus.
The downside is the depth of the unit. Measure your shelf to see if it will fit.

Summary: My First DVD player...
Review: (First day)
Bought this one coz of the reviews..."research helps"
Well I had to return the first one that came coz it didnt play cds just dvds(so I rated it one star/so disappointed)...so I had to wait

And the wait was worth it...
I have no basis of comparison-I dont know if APEX players are the same in regards to 5 disc or single disc carousel types(they are cheap and some say that they are a bang for the buck but there some reviews said it really did look like its price-cheap and easily breaks)...this is my first dvd player and it is pretty nice.It has lots of features.Great Picture and sound (While watching Lord of the Rings)...all you can expect from a great dvd player. All for the [an awesome price] plus shipping. But seems like the price shot up! My only advice is that if you are going to buy a DVD player buy the one for Price and quality and I guess this was the one.
Hopefully its sturdy enough to last me for years...
Amazon[.com] is awesome!!!

Summary: Great Purchase for little Price!
Review: This is my first DVD player purchase. I wass skeptical at what I would get for what I was paying but we are very pleased! The quality of picture is great, instruction manual for settings is extremely easy, and it meets all are initial expectations.
The only drawback is that it is a little slow going from disc to disc.

Summary: Just fine and dandy
Review: My wife and I live in the home entertainment Stone Age, and it was only this week that we finally fired up our first DVD player - the Toshiba SD-2805.

We purchased this device for a pittance on the website that shall remain anonymous, except that it's also a river.(Huh? Mississippi? Danube? Perhaps Mekong?) Anyway, the player meets all expectations.

I'm mechanically adept as a brick. I mean, I need coaching on how to hammer a nail. But the SD-2805 was amazingly simple to get up and running. The standard audio and video connections that came in the box were perfect for our older 27-inch TV. I barely needed the more than adequate owner's manual. (Now, when we get that $6K, 42-inch, HDTV flat screen with the Blast-Out-the-Neighbors sound system, we'll need more cables. But that's then, and this is now.) And when I started up the only DVD in my possession, CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN, Penélope Cruz was more of a Babe than I remembered (due to the excellent quality of the picture). I can even zoom in to ogle!

The TOSHIBA SD-2805 will do for us everything we expect of a DVD player at this time. Sure, it'll ostensibly play audio CDs, but I really don't care since I generally only listen to those on my auto's Bose system, and it would be awkward to connect the car speakers into the SD-2805 anyway. (Boy, I'd need miles and miles of wire just for the daily trip to work!) And I've seen the criticism that the buttons on the remote are too small. While that observation is perhaps legit, just hire a savvy 5-year old to punch them for you while you occupy your hands with the beer and chips.

For the price, this new toy represents excellent value.

Summary: Would not play a single thing.
Review: Opened the box, hooked everything up and inserted my first DVD. Played for about 5 seconds then stopped and never played a thing again. Not a DVD, not a CD and I tried various ones-all store bought. I guess I had a dud. Toshiba does make quality things regardless of this low rating.

Summary: Great DVD picture and CD sound, but problems with MP3s
Review: I repeat, the DVD picture and sound is fantastic, and so is the audio on CDs. However, the one CD-R I tried with MP3 files on it doesn't play at all. The machine finds all the tracks, but refuses to play almost all of them: most it just pauses on for two seconds then skips to the next; some it will "play", but all you hear is a bunch of dangerous sounding pops and beeps. For some random reason, it did successfully play one of the David Gray songs, and it sounded great, but no others. Now, this CD-R was in CDFS format, which is an extension to ISO9660, with long filename support, so perhaps that is the problem? I know the manual says only ISO9660 with 8.3 names is supported...I'll have to continue to experiment.

Also, MP3 track navigation blows bigtime: if you have a file tree of nested directories, you only ever see the MP3 file names, not the directories.

A more general problem I noticed was the loud clicking the machine makes when stopping or starting play of any format media: it does not sound too healthy.

So, I'm somewhat disappointed, considering this was top rated by Consumer Reports, and I wish amazon gave free shipping on this item, but still, for $$$, it's not too bad, as long as you don't mind poor MP3 compatibility.

Summary: Does Toshiba have a quality problem?
Review: Bought a Toshiba SD2815 DVD/CD player... very similar to SD2805. Right out of the box it wouldn't play the Spiderman DVD, which worked fine in my PC's DVD player. I returned it the very next day and bought a Sony instead. It played the same DVD just fine. The store where I bought it had several other returned Toshiba DVD players besides mine. The lesson I learned: Think twice before buying a Toshiba DVD player.
