Summary: Raw and riveting
Review: Ari, a handsome Greek immigrant living in Australia, is a rebellious young man who is at odds with his family and society. To escape the pressure, he indulges himself in anonymous sex and drugs. We follow him through 24 hours of his life and it is a rocky and hypnotic trip. The director, Ana Kokkinos, is one to watch. The film is stylish, sometimes resembling an MTV video, with the camera jumping and swinging and depicting bright colors and sunny skies that still seem to convey a mood of decadance. The characters are filmed in tight close-ups and even in the intense sex scenes, the camera remains steady on the lead character's face. The plot occassionally drags but what keeps us watching is the leading actor, Alex Dimitriades. His smoldering intense looks clearly do not detract but his performance is powerful and multi-layered. It's unbelievable that Hollywood has not snatched him up yet. Gritty and intense, you won't take HEAD ON lightly and it will keep you thinking about it long afterward.

Summary: Head On was Amazing
Review: At first I did not know what to expect, but as the movie went on, so many things unfolded. Ana the director captured the struggle one faced coming out, being Greek and living at home. A dreadful father, but not to different from most dads who are hooked onto their culture and their macho status. I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue, hated all the drugs, but that was life for this guy and his pals. Being a poofter wasn't all that bad for him, he got plenty of guys, and it was a very erotic flick. Highly recommend it, and I don't usually see a movie a second time, but would view this one again and again. Still talking about some of the scenes the next day, all the struggles, being torn with culture and gayness and enjoying gay sex.....a lot! Buy it, it is truly one for the DVD Library.

Summary: Good, tough film
Review: Head On is a good film. It captures the greater difficulties a lot of ethnic gay men due to their more macho restrictive cultures. The acting is good, nice plotting, tension, and some fairly explicit sex scenes. Do not look to be uplifted and do not look for romance. But for a tough drama with some hot sex, this is a good catch.

Summary: A film that grabs you at a gut level
Review: I caught "Head On" on television one night, with absolutely no idea what it was about. I've never seen a pure-bred Australian film, let alone an independent one. After seeing this movie, I am looking forward to exploring more within the same genre. "Head On" is a compelling and haunting examination of alienation and conflicted ideals. At it's core, it's a look at the bridge between adolescence and adulthood, and the multitude of factors which confuse and distort the identity of young people trying to find their place in the world. "Head On"'s narrative illustrates the canyon between innate human desires and social conventions with unflinching honesty, confronting the common narrow-mindedness of people and their perception of what is wrong and what is right. Where the emotional resonance of the film comes from is the fact that the life of the main character, Ari, is not developed in a clean arc, but rather in an abitrary jumble of pleasure, suffering, and the myriad of feelings in between. His struggle for answers is fleshed out with compassion, sensitivity and even humour. The actor who plays Ari portrays his character with an exhilirating sense of realness, shaping his performance without any kind of emotional or physical inhibitions. "Head On" does at time derail into melodrama, especially towards the end, but the strength of it's ultimate message is consistent through-out. This is exactly the kind of film that is worth the time and effort to watch.

Summary: A REALISTIC LOOK INTO A CHAPTER OF GAY LIFE!
Review: I found this movie to be very ingrossing and unlike some of the reviewer's who say this just does not happen; it is an integral part of the homosexual scene. Especially when you are from a small town or ghetto.

And even though Dimitrades is a hunk. He did a great job of acting. And if most of the homosexuals over 40 cannot remember waking up one morning after 'last call', and wish they could bite their arm off... to get away from what they went home with... or that dark alley or park incident...well... they are lying.

I liked everyone in this movie, the gals the music and the dancing, which Dimitrades showed with surperb cooridination and balance.

Ari, ( Dimitrades) has a very low self esteem, no job and no one to love as he thinks he is incapable of being loved and to love someone. Hence his in the alley quickies, night or day. He toys around with one of the greek girls, but cannot finish what he starts...

The ending is very poignant!! I gave this a 5 star rating and would have given it more if possible.

Summary: This is NOT for everyone
Review: I must admit to being sadly dissapointed in this movie! I had been told a lot of good things about it by people, and read a number of reviews for it before finally purchasing it. Having watched it I must say it was not good, but not terrible. I gave it three stars just for the good acting, and because I love a good Autralian accent. lol The plot is, to say the least, lack luster, and is just as muddled and pointless as the main characters life. It was downright boring at times, and that is never good, when the viewer feels compelled to pick up the remote and fast forward. Yikes. While the main Character is attractive, he's on the cover of the box, that is not enough to carry the film, and his taste in men is apparently for the unattractive. The ending is just insane, I mean maybe I've been acclimated to happy endings by U.S. films, but this ending was neither happy, sad, nor even poignant it was just ended. I would suggest not buying this movie. Rent it then buy it, that is the safe bet.

Summary: WELL CONCEIVED FILM
Review: i ordered this movie on a total hunch having no idea what it was really about or without having heard anything about it. i would like to say that my gamble paid off. this movie is very interesting because it reaches out in so many levels. first you have the main character, ari ( i hope i spelled that right), who is a young man in a strange place. he is a greek living in australia b/c of immigration. he has grown up there but the culture does not accept the greeks. he is gay and a drug user and likes to have anonymous sex. he, in his view, is living his life the way he wants. he has no apparent direction to his life, but he has high plans for the future. he has a friend who is a drag queen and they go out and have an interesting night. ari does not get along with his father, loves his mother and his family. all of these aspects come into play throughout the movie. it is a brief glimpse into his life, but the glimpse is very vivid and telling. he is closeted to all but his family, but acts like he could care less for them to find out. he never thinks clearly mostly b/c he is usually high on some sort of drug. the movie moves very fast b/c it is supposed to be an effect, like seeing the movie thorugh his eyes as if you were watching the film on drugs. in the end you ultimately feel sorry for ari because he does not know what to do with his life. he is a lost soul with no one to help lead him. he desires love and affection and above all acceptance, but the contradiction is that he will not let anyone near enought to offer him the support he desires. this is a very good coming of age film and is useful in showing how a life can spin out of control. great film, i highly recommend it.
