Summary: nostalgic, and still effective, edutainment
Review: This material does seem a bit dated, so it's easy to forget that this was a radical idea when it first came out -- learning can be fun! It still is, thanks to the reissue of the material found on this two-disc set. Shortly after receiving a complimentary copy, my husband was singing along to old favorites and our toddler was having a grand old time learning the songs. All original 46 songs from the show are here, as well as the brand new "I'm Gonna Send Your Vote to College", about the electoral college, and a lost song, "The Weather Show". There are also three songs with the series' only continuing characters, Scooter Computer and Mr. Chips.

You can view a full selection list or see items grouped into categories of Grammar Rock, Science Rock, Multiplication Rock, America Rock or Money Rock, and a jukebox capability allows you to make playlists of songs to be played in order or on shuffle. There's a short trivia game with quizzes and word scrambles, puzzles, four music videos (by the Lemonheads and others) singing SHR songs to the SHR video, a featurette about the show's Emmy wins, a Nike commercial using a SHR song, and fun, interesting commentary by several of the SHR team. This dvd version is terrific, demonstrating that the Schoolhouse Rock team is still just as dedicated to quality programming and education as it ever was. The accompanying booklet is packed with color and information -- including the words to eleven songs.

Very nicely done and highly recommended, not only for nostalgic value, but for its continuing ability to inform and entertain.

Summary: A Winner!
Review: I was excited to get the 30th edition of the Schoolhouse Rock songs. I remembered them fondly from my childhood. So, I just knew my almost 9 y/o son would love it. When we first played it, he was less than thrilled. His first reaction to things is generally like that. However, he has played the songs numerous times and I often find him dancing around the house while singing them. An even bigger hit with him are the trivia games on one of the DVDs. He'll work on those for hours if I let him. I think learning, for the most part, should be fun. Schoolhouse Rock fits that bill!

Summary: The best in "educational" learning.
Review: These cartoon shorts from the eighties are abosolutely essential today. With budget shortfalls claiming each school system's level of teaching each day, these short cartoon's touch on the basis of what we want our kids to learn. And they do so in an entertaining manner that still works in this technological era.If you watch these shorts, I'm sure you'll agree.Actually I challenge you not too!!

Summary: Still amazing after all these years!
Review: Back in the 70s, I learned a lot about grammar, math and the Constitution from these short cartoons. Watching them again after 30 years, they are compact and entertaining miracles, combining catchy tunes with a surprisingly large amount of information. I plan to give a number of these as Christmas gifts to people with children. Leave your kids in front of the TV with this DVD, and they will likely surprise you with how fast they pick this stuff up.

Summary: Highly original then, and in their original form now!
Review: Like many who grew up with and loved these great educational and entertaining cartoon shorts, I'm glad ALL of these are available now on DVD and with so many bonus extras!

But this being the new millenium, I'm also glad that:
a) Spielberg hasn't re-digitized them to make them look "better"
b) Disney hasn't edited or dumbed them down for "mass consumption"
c) P Diddy wasn't asked to re-mix any of the songs to add "flava"

In other words, enjoy these great originals in their original, charming form! Some of the best/catchiest/coolest music you'll ever hear, and you'll even learn something along the way too. Double bonus for everyone, enjoy!

Summary: Simply delightful!
Review: I eagerly watched the "Schoolhouse Rock" cartoons as a child. I even once had the "Multiplication Rock" LP with the songs. With catchy tunes, funny animation and clever packaging, ABC used the cartoons to teach kids about basic math, science, grammar and history. And they took, too. Who among us won't start humming along when given a few bars of "Conjunction Junction" or "I'm Just a Bill?"

I am delighted that they are now available on DVD for a new generation. May they energize our kids with a love of learning and knowledge just as we were.

Summary: Not All Schoolhouse Rock Clips Created Equal
Review: I've rated this a five because it is utterly essential for aging ex-kids like me and for current kids who never ever want to forget the words to the Preamble. But not all the clips are touchdowns. I now present my humble (but correct) opinions on the major installments, rated on a scale from "my hero, zero," to a perfect "little twelvetoes":

My Hero, Zero -- Score: Little Twelvetoes. Maybe the single most perfect effort in the bunch (although "3" will run it a close race). A difficult concept wrapped up in an unbelievably catchy tune with witty graphics. Everything you remember it was.

Elementary, My Dear -- Score: I Got Six. Snappy but rather unimaginative. dull.

If all you got in this package was "Three is a Magic Number," "My Hero, Zero," "Conjunction Junction," "The Preamble," "Lolly," "Verb," and "Figure Eight," it would be worthwhile. With all the extras, it's positively very very necessary.

Summary: It truly does not get any better than this!
Review: If I could give this DVD 6 stars, I would. Fantastic and essential. You need to own this DVD today. Few television programs can be called landmark and life changing. This is one of them.

Summary: What a wonderful trip back in time!!!!
Review: I received this DVD today and can't say enough wonderful things about it. My 8 year old sat and watched it with me and thought it was so funny (not realizing he was actually learning). I remember answering test questions with knowledge gained from these songs while I was growing up. You will find yourself singing along with "Conjunction junction whats your function" and "Lolly, lolly, lolly get your adverbs here". "It was a hairy bear, it was a scary bear, so I unpacked my adjectives". They have a brochure inside that has the words to the top 10 songs. I really appreciate how much I learned and now to have them all together in one DVD to share with my kids!! What a great Christmas present to give and get!!!!
