Summary: DVD750VR Philips combo DVD VCR unit
Review: I just recently reveived my new unit and ran through the basics of use as a DVD player, a VCR and recording from one of my home made DVD's(Made on aPhilips DVD recorder) and evrything worked just fine. Picture and sound quality excellent and I am pleased with the ease of using the unit. I noted in prior reviews a comment that the unit would not play back a DVD made on aPhilips DVD recorder. I thought I had the same problem until I discovered that the DVD+R disc that I was attempting to play back had NOT BEEN FINALIZED. When I finalized the disc on the Rceorder it played back flawlessly on the 750VR.
In sum, as of now, I am very pleased with my purchase.

Summary: Still going strong, after one year
Review: I purchased this unit (as a Christmas present to myself) to replace a VCR, and to have DVD playback in my den. After just under one year of use, I have no significant complaints (perhaps I've just been much luckier than other reviewers). Unlike other reviewers, I've had no trouble with this unit eating tapes, in fact it plays them back in very high quality; same with the DVD side (I've actually been able to play DVDs on this unit that my older, but more expensive RCA unit would not play).

Also, I'm unsure about the complaint another reviewer had regarding not being able to turn off VCR timer recordings, once set. I've had no such problem; resetting or eliminating programming is easy, ONCE you get the hang of it.

Which brings me to my complaints, of which I do have a few. Setting up VCR recordings is not very intuitive...luckily, I have dealt with just such a beast in a Symphonic brand VCR that my place of employment uses (from the appearance of the user interface, I'd assume that Philips also manufactures Symphonic). Still, for a new user, it would be rather confusing, to say the least. Also, I am NOT a fan of the remote control (which you MUST use in order to set up timer recordings). And, of all the things NOT to have on a remote, there is no eject mechanism, for either the VCR or DVD player; such an option seems pretty basic, IMHO.

Overall though, 4 stars from this user!

Summary: GREAT Buy!
Review: I purchased this unit and it's great, made my life easier because I was able to add DVD capability to my system without making things more complicated and without loosing the ability to view my VHS collection.

DVD Section plays fine, and I was able to record a program on VHS while I watched a DVD, pretty cool!

Summary: VCR NEVER WORKED
Review: I purchased this unit so that I could have two units in one.
Right from the begining the VCR did not work. I could hear some of the sound track however nothing displayed when it came to the video. The people at customer support were very helpful and we tried to troubleshoot the problem together. Finally I was told to return it. I did so and got another one. Same problem and again customer support was unable to help. This time I gave it to my daughter so that she could use the DVD part of it. That side is still working with no problems after these nine months. The DVD part does not skip and plays all media that I've put through it. I JUST WISH THE VCR WOULD HAVE WORKED.

Summary: Poor DVD Playback
Review: I thought I got a great deal on this DVD/VCR Combo unit at $85.00. That is, until I actually tried to use it. The setup was easy enough. However, the first three DVD+Rs I tried to play skipped throughout the DVD and then eventually stopped playing. I had to eject the discs in order to reset it. I run my TV through my vcr so the unit has to be turned on in order for my TV to work. Maybe it was getting too hot but I did not have this problem with my old unit. I gave it two stars because I did not even try playing a video tape before I returned it to the store.

Summary: A terrible company
Review: I would at all costs stay away from any product made by Phillips. I bought a dvd/vcr combo, it broke, I shipped it to them for repair, they charged me shipping and then sent back another broken unit. They then refused to take it back at their expense, even though they had shipped a broken unit (The first time the dvd didn't work, the unit they shipped to me had a defective vcr). Their customer service people have no authority to help you, and neither does their management. Repeated attempts to move up the ladder were ignored (i.e. being constantly told they weren't available, they never returned phone calls even after telling me they would, etc.). Beware of any Phillips product.

Summary: Do not buy. Philips service is non-existent
Review: I would not recommend this product to anyone. The remote is difficult to use. Their support is worse.

I bought this product and it broke the very first day of use. I put in a VCR tape in the machine. I had just watched this movie and rewound the tape that morning. I played a little bit of the tape and then tried to rewind it. It would not rewind and got stuck in the machine. It was flashing err 2. I called their support line. I got cut off twice and had to explain my problem to 3 different people. They could not help. They did not know what err 2 meant. The product was still under warranty as this was the same day I had purchased it. If I wanted it fixed, I had to send it to a repair center at my expense, even though it was brand new. A friend of mine got the tape removed and then it flashed err 3. The VCR part of this brand new machine was not usable.

I returned the product to the store.

Summary: Does NOT play SQPB (S-VHS playback at VHS resolution)
Review: Just to save someone an extra trip . . . I was looking for a unit that wud play "everything I got." This one almost does it, except for the fact that it doesn't play S-VHS tapes, as stated in many of the reviews that I read before purchasing this otherwise "great" unit. I contacted Philips on line and via phone call, and was informed that the DVD750VR is not compatible with S-VHS. When I mentioned that I had read in several reviews that it WOULD play these, she asked if it was from their Philips site, or elsewhere. When I told her elsewhere, she directed me to the info on the Philips site and also the manual on that site, and true enuff, there was no mention of this unit having SQPB (S-VHS playback at VHS resolution) compatibility.
It played everthing else I threw at it fine. CD, CDR/RW, DVD+RW disks, mp3, jpeg picture disk, even played a disk that my Sister had made for me, that contained background music and slide show of over 100 photo's. I took the Philips DVD750VR back and exchanged it for a Sony SLV-D300P which does play all my stuff.

Summary: Merry Christmas,not
Review: My grandmother bought this for Christmas. The picture is good on the vcr but the dvd part is not compatable on the t.v. since it has a built in vcr, even thought I dont use that one because it eats tapes. Otherwise you can make video copies of dvds, or at least thats what Philips told me when I called. The dvd player has black lines going through it. Thanks for reading.

Summary: need to read the manual for remote
Review: remote controll operation is relatively sophisticated, and i could not have used it without reading the manual, but after that it is a delight. for a reasonalbe price, it provided excellent features, such as ability to play VCD, JPEG, ability to record from DVD to VHS within the player, and does all these things really well, as long as you are familiar with instruction manual, which is easy to use as well.
