The Legend of Bagger Vance is a flick of drowning, overwritten melodrama saved by its enjoyable artists and storyline life-preservers.

Let's Get Dramatical. In the words of one befuddled moviegoer, (Lindy Merrill, Texas A&M University Construction Science major), "I didn't know golf could be so dramatic." TLBV introduces Bagger Vance, played by Will-"The Fresh Prince of Bel Air"-Smith, a vagabond (celestial?) which makes appearances, intervenes in Life's course, and then disappears-ostensibly off to inspire another poor soul to find his/her "field." The concept of "field" is cryptically encoded, so that only movie audiences familiar with Zen Golf can comprehend its deep, philosophical meaning. Under the scriptures of golf religions, you will find the mantra, "Everyone has they own authentic swing," according to Vance. This is an allegory on life.

The Next, Next Robert Redford. Brad Pitt with his good looks and cool savoir faire has often been referred to as the next Robert Redford. With that in mind, Matt Damon is the next, next Redford. Damon, comes off smooth and silkily slides into his role as, Rannalph Judah. Nothing is unnatural about this man. He is a golden boy with a believable smile, ocean-blue eyes, and the perfect ire of an underdog golfer of the 1920's.

Enjoyable Storyline Based on the novel by Steven Pressfield, director Robert Redford brings the 1920's to life with vivid imagery of golf as it were. In the opening scene, seasoned ace Jack Lemmon, Old Hardy Greaves, has a heart attack, and while lying supine on the rough, reminisces about his childhood, including a chance encounter with Bagger Vance. He remembers Judah and Judah's estranged lover Adele Invergordon, (actress Charlize Theron-who by the way has a heinous Georgia accent), and thus recants their tale of golf and life.

Golf's Alright In the end, TLBV is an enjoyable movie, just pay no attention to its grasp at something substantial. Ignore the underdeveloped characters, but enjoy the actors and setting. Take the humor with a grain of 1920's salt, because it's rather dated, but if your willing to suspend your disbelief for a couple of hours, you will find yourself loving the game-golf, not life.

Summary: Finally, a movie that challenges the viewer to think.
Review: Let's admit it, most american movies are no-brainers. The Legend of Bagger Vance requires more cerebral-cortex and less reptilian complex to be understood and enjoyed. The ideas presented may not be new but they are timeless. I congratulate Mr. Redford, Mr. Pressfield and the movie's actors for casting these pearls of beauty and wisdom before us. I can only hope there will be more of this type of picture in the future.

Summary: Redford should stick to acting..BORING
Review: Robert Redford shows you some beautiful sceanery. Will Smith and Matt Damon do their best. But this film was put together so shoddy I cant beleive it. Microphones appear everywhere throughout this film. If your depressed and need some inspiration though shallow as it is go see this film. Robert Redford gets an "F" for editing. You loose the magic of the film when you see microphones dangling around. The theaters already pulled this one from their screens. Wait for Blockbuster.

Summary: Matt Damon Becomes "The Natural"
Review: There are so many aspects of this DVD that remind me of another fantastic movie that Robert Redford directed: The Natural. The cinematography is spectacular--especially set against the landscape of southeast Georgia. The movie ends with lighting effects as outstanding as those at the end of The Natural. (Remember when Redford knocks the baseball out of the park and into the stadium lights?) Reminiscent of 1940's-style movies, Bagger Vance proves that entertainment in the new millenium can be inspirational and thought-provoking. The lead actors (Damon, Smith, Theron, and Lemon) were equally convincing and well-suited to their roles. I hope that the success and beauty of Bagger Vance will inspire other directors and producers in Hollywood to create classic works of film in the 21st century.

Summary: A Lot More Than Just Golf
Review: The first thing that I have to say is that I am not a fan of golf. I don't really understand the sport and think it's boring. But the movie was not just about golf which made me enjoy it even more. The thing that made me want to see this movie were the actors. Matt Damon, who in my opinion is one of the best actors at the moment, gives a splendid performance. He is believable and really gives you a feel for his character. Will Smith gives an unexpected performance, portraying Damon's caddy, Bagger Vance. Usually when you see Will Smith he's toting a gun. But I was pleasantly surprised by his acting ability shown in this drama. He made the movie more interesting and even more fun to watch.. Robert Redford definately knows how to make a movie. The cinematogrophy is some of the best I have seen in awhile. He is a truly great director, and gives audiences a story to ponder over for a few days. Truly, one of the best dramas to come out this year.

Summary: Spiritual Meaning in Golf?
Review: This film struck me as an attempt to make the game of golf as a metaphor for our entire lives. Lets face it, it is simply a game, not some ancient Zen teaching that the Buddhists left us to figure out. Some good acting on the part of Matt Damon and Will Smith, but otherwise it was a very odd film. It was a film that also attempted to munipulate a simple game into something much larger then it really is. Not to mention it being incredibly boring! Directos must really come to face with the facts in the future, movies that are strictly about a sport aren't very good films, especially this one, where Will Smith tries to divulge the meaning of life through a golf game!

Review: Great movie, I now believe Redford can do it all, then make you believe you can too! I think the casting was great (especially Smith), and RR's adaptation of the book was even better considering the difficulties involved. If you are looking for an intelligent movie that will leave you with more thoughts than how the ticket prices have gone up, I highly recomend this one.

Summary: Quite a Legend in the Making
Review: "Bagger" is quite the Legend in the making in my opinion.

It is rare for a movie to come along that is both Inspirational on a deep level, and at the same time Extremely funny.

Will Smith gives an oscar worthy performance in one of the best movies of 2000 in my opinion. Matt Damon is equally great, making the transition from shell shocked war veteran to alcoholic, to comeback kid on the green.

This is a great movie, don't miss it!

Review: Dreamworks and Robert Redford should be ashamed of themselves. The fact that the microphone kept showing through out the movie is inexcusable. The audience kept yelling there it is which was very distracting and caused most people to laugh and lose interest in the movie. I guess as long as we keep paying for second rate movies they will keep delivering them..
