Review: Coyote head coach Bud Kilmer (played by the ever-smug Jon Voight) stands at an oak podium above the students at the West Caanan High School Gymnasium. He raises a hand, Neo-Nazi style, quieting the crowd down from the highly football frenzied group it is used to being, into quiet attentive Pavlovian canines. "Tonaaght," Kilmer exclaims in his thick as molasses Texas sized accent, "Way play Baangvil'. Tonaaght, we beat Baangvil'." The crowd is whipped into a frenzy once again as in his speech we learn the premise behind this year's first bonafied sports offering Varsity Blues - to win, and win at all costs. You see, success on the football field in West Caanan, Texas is as common as a tall, frosty glass of lemonade in that very state's summer months. 22 District Championships, and two state titles make up the resume of Kilmer and his Coyotes of the past 30 years and no one will stand in the way of success or title number 23. The film spans the final five games of what would be the Coyotes' nucleus of gridders' high school careers with Kilmer, his star quarterback Lance Harbor (Paul Walker) and the rest of the town well on their way to a perfect season at 4-0. Written by Peter Iliff (Point Break), Varisty Blues follows the formula of any 'cheer for the underdog' experience as the star quarterback is sidelined with a career threatening knee injury and the second string signal caller Jonathon Moxon (James Van Der Beek) takes the reigns of the coasting Coyote team. Being an 'out-of-the-box' thinker, Moxon (or 'Mox' as the town calls him) tries to do his best at rebelling against the system, by implementing various plays and schemes much to the chagrin of the dictator-like coach Kilmer. Needless to say, Moxon's insubordination works itself out in a way that spells success for West Caanan. This propels 'Mox' into the town spotlight overnight via the gridiron. As slow and methodical as a 25-play touchdown drive, Moxon begins to show his teammates the error of Kilmer's ways. Van Der Beek plays the role of Moxon in a way much like his role as Dawson Leary on the WB's Dawson's Creek but with much more confidence accompanied by a highly anarchistic edge. Somehow, Moxon does not succumb to the fruits of stardom (although we can see it in his eyes how much he wants to) and comes out shiny and new on the other side despite a spat with girlfriend Darcy (Ali Larter) over this stardom, and a close encounter with a whipped cream bikini. Accompanying 'Mox' on his journey of insurrection is a cast of characters straight from Ridgemont High. 'Tweeder' (Scott Caan) is the out-of-control cowboy whose taste for fast cars and fast women is only topped by his love of football. Wendell Davis (Eliel Swinton) is the African-American running back who believes his talent can take him only as far as his skin color will allow at West Caanan. Ron Lester plays Billy Bob, as the morbidity obese, and much more often than not token 'fat guy' in these types of films. This is where I would like to commend director Brian Robbins. He not only gives Billy Bob real-life and likable feel, but a silent strength and passionate power not given to such characters in other films. In between Kilmer's diatribes and Mox's 'quarterback with a cause' routine, Varsity Blues blows away the viewing audience with some of the greatest sports action sequences to ever grace a movie screen. In one particular scene, after the guys get smashed at a local strip bar the night before a game, they subsequently get smashed on the field to the tune of AC/DC's "Thunderstruck". Undoubtedly the finest camera work and art direction of any football film ever made. Not since 1983's All The Right Moves, has the game on the gridiron been portrayed so cinematically yet realistic at the same moment. While Varsity Blues hits many of the points of cliché these types of movies tend to hit, its originality of how it achieves these things as well a the highly impressive direction make it an impressive film to take in. This is especially for the virtual rookie film maker Brian Robbins, whose only experience was directing lead stars Keenan and Kel in Good Burger last year. Just give Robbins another chance to get behind the camera and he just may break away for a touchdown.

Summary: A must see for every southern small town football player!!
Review: One of the most enjoyable movies I have seen in a long time. As a young man, I attended and played football for a small southeast Texas high school. This particular movie like none I have ever seen before, brought back so many memories! My wife and I laughed and talked about our high school days for weeks. I recommend this movie to everyone....especially those of us who where fortunate enough to experience football and the many traditions of those good ole Texas high schools. Own it!!!

Summary: If you appreciate being a teen, you'll love it
Review: At first when I saw the ad on TV, I said, screw it, I've seen one, I've seen them all. When my parents went to the movies and wanted to see some parent crap, I decided what the hell, The rest of my football team was there, I should be too. I've never been a fan of the Dawson Creek characters, but they made this movie the masterpiece it is. Okay, okay, so maybe taking my younger brother wasn't the best idea, but even he enjoyed the film, be warned there is nudity, folks! I liked how the main character went from zero to hero at the expense of his friends injury, yet still remained loyal, even when he was given the opportunity to "play" around with his friends girl. The characters were all friends to the end, and saw each other through, holding their heads high. Of course every movie isn't complete without a "bad guy". Their coach completed the part quite nicely. The team had to join together to be rid of their coach, and yet played a fine game of ball. This movie may not seem like a great film, but for all the people out there who appreciate the sport, friendship, and being a teen I highly recommend this one.

Review: This movie it had it all any high school movie would ever need. It had hot boys for the ladies, especially the scene with Tweeders butt. Scott Caan the actor who played Tweeder made the movie, he provided a ton of humour and is who you should watch in the movie, besides being great looking he is a great actor. Lots of naked girls for the boys. Plus it showed that in highschool kids do drink and party it may not be a good thing but thats just how things are. I saw the movie in the theater seven time and plan to watch it all the time on video.

Review: It's got everything. Big trucks, hot girls, beer, and football. When you've got those, who needs a plot?I've read all of the ignorant reviews of this movie, and it makes me mad that the critics are so blind that they wouldn't even know a good movie if they starred in it. If you haven't seen this movie yet, it is at least worth $2.50 to rent.

Review: Perfect Movie for Guy's: Girls, Drinking, Football. What more could you ask for? I played fooball in High School, and this movie reminded me of some of our victories, and defeats. This movie captured what High School football is all about. Blood, Sweat, Tears, and Parties. A Perfec Movie for Girls: Pretty boys like Paul Walker(Pleasantville, She's All That) and VanDerBeek(Dawson's) are perfect for the ladies. Watching this movie brings out the jersey chaser in all girls. I like Darcy, not just for the Whip Cream bikini(that was cool) but we see the struggle for something better, which she endures. Overall, one of the best movies I've ever seen. Big up to Brian Robbins!!!!!
