Summary: Widescreen feature is a "HOAX" on Raging Bull DVD
Review: When you view Raging Bull in TRUE WIDESCREEN you see Scorsese's cameo in the final shot of the film when DeNiro performs his monologue in front of the mirror.

I own a copy of Raging Bull on VHS, but it isn't widescreen. So, I bought a copy of it on DVD because MGM advertises that Raging Bull is WIDESCREEN on the DVD case.

The widescreen on Raging Bull DVD is phony. IT IS NOT THE WIDESCREEN version of the film.

MGM tries to TRICK you into thinking you have widescreen Raging Bull by adding black bars to the standard television format.

So, instead of gaining up to 50% more image on the left and right of the screen, you actually LOSE a good percentage of the image at both the top and bottom. This is not widescreen.

It is false advertising done by MGM.

The True widescreen version of Raging Bull shows director Martin Scorsese. The DVD version of Raging Bull which is supposed to be WIDESCREEN does not.

If you want to see for your self, select a scene from Raging Bull "widescreen" and examine the composition. Memorize the top, bottom, left and right of the screen.

After you have done so, view the exact image on standard format. You will notice the difference. MGM has cropped off the top and bottom of the picture in the widescreen format hoping to trick us into thinking with have the real thing.

I am very disappointed with MGM and encourage you to refrain from purchasing Raging Bull DVD until a TRUE widescreen version is released.

Summary: One of the best American films of all time
Review: I will not be redundant of the deserved high praise others have given this movie, and particularly DeNiro and Scorcese, except to say that I agree completely. Few reviewers have mentioned the stunning performance of Joe Pesci (in his first major film role) in which he perfectly creates a character who is hilariously funny, ultra-violent and a compassionate and caring brother. For the viewer, a great companion film is the Scorcese-DeNiro-Pesci work, Goodfellas.

Summary: A masterpiece (thought most people don't know why)
Review: This film is a masterpiece. We're all flawed individuals, and an individual is not to blame for his/her personality development. But we are all responsible to control what we've become, and that is hard for all of us. Some more than others, like the bull in this film. If only there were safe places for all children to deal with their emotions. But there aren't, and that's why the world is suffering. And it only gets worse.

And why bash "Ordinary People"? That's also a brilliant film. Just because it doesn't have tough guys, tough dialogue, and blood doesn't mean it's a sissy movie. If anything, it's more disturbing than "Raging Bull". At least Jake LaMotta tried to redeem himself to those he hurt, and to himself. Mary Tyler Moore's character in "Ordinary People" simply walked out, losing the battle AND the war. Now how on earth could she ever live with herself? At least LaMotta found a way to live with himself without being the animal of his past.

Summary: This movie makes me kind of crazy every time I see it. . .
Review: This is one of the finest movies made - I think you can probably glean that from all of the enthusiastic reviews on this page. All of what these others say in praise is true.

What I want to get across is this: This is also the most realistic boxing movie (non-documentary) ever made. I used to fight as a light-heavyweight out of Phila., and watching this movie gives me sympathetic muscle spasms, it's so real. I have to take deep breaths during the fight scenes in order to get my pulse rate back down.

Every time I watch it, I forget for a moment that I am now an overweight, middle-aged guy on the sofa, and the years fall away to when I was a strong young man with good speed and good power in both hands.

It's that real and that true. This, compared to other boxing movies where I view the fight scenes with mild derision. You want to know what a boxer sees and feels? Watch this movie!

Summary: De Niro and Pesci at their best
Review: A Scorsese masterpiece. The acting is so superb and so believable De Niro and Pesci make each other look like a couple of movie Mozarts.

Summary: The Best Film of the Decade
Review: "Raging Bull," nearly 20 years after its initial release, is just as potent now as it was then. After Scorsese's ill-fated "New York, New York," the director desperately needed something new, raw, and vigorous. And this is it. Scorsese's direction and Thelma Schoonmaker's editing are brilliant throughout, but the film wouldn't command half as much respect without the presence of De Niro. For me, he exemplifies all that is great about acting. This is one of the finest performances ever, and Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty are equally great. There's not much else I can say here. I can either talk about this film and spoil any surprises for you, or you can go out and rent it today. Strike that: just go out and buy the damn thing. It is an overpowering motion picture experience, and is one you will never forget.

Summary: That's no bull!
Review: Raging Bull is one of the best films I've ever seen. This black-and-white film seems like a documentary but never forgets it's a movie. It's realistic as it is gritty. The use of the camera is a masterpeice of cinematography. This is definitely Scorsese's best movie and should have won the Best Director oscar. He masterfully depicts the prizefighter Jake LaMotta's life, whether if he is in the ring or not. The wonderful colored sequences add to the movie's ingenuity. Only a team of something like Scorsese and De Niro can pull off something as magical as this. One of the finest movies ever made? You betcha.
