Summary: Stunning Visuals, Good Introduction to Buddhism
Review: As a practicing Buddhist, I found this film about the life of the young Dalai Lama to be particularly interesting. Scorcese does a wonderful job with visuals, and Philip Glass has created a soundtrack which remains true (for the most part) to Tibetan music. The film also provides a good look from an historical perspective at the Chinese invasion in 1959. Once can only hope this film will also serve as a vehicle for educating those who watch it about the Tibetan people, and their struggles, joys, and sorrows. Perhaps one day those living in the land of the snows will once again be free...educating others about oppression can only serve as a good way to some day end it.

Review: A beautiful film. Sumptuous, dream-like images, a mesmerizing score by Phillip Glass and a remarkable story about a remarkable human being make this a must-see. Skip the pan-and-scan tape and go right to the wide-screen DVD. You won't want to miss out on the gorgeous compositions.

Summary: His Holiness should be pleased with the film.
Review: I found this video to be a true and faithful representation of the trials and struggles of the Tibetan people. His Holiness seems to be a true representation of the reflection in the still waters of life of the Buddha-full of compasion for all mankind and living creation. I had the good fortune of meeting His Holiness while in graduate school at Regis University. It was a dream come true for a mystics vision. Summary: Scorsese and "Kundun": A gift for a troubled humanity.
Review: For those on the Path, here is a rich and magical offering that will satisfy all those inner memories of Tibet, the Teachings and His Holiness. Scorsese continues his own spiritual search which we first saw in "The Last Temptation of Christ", expanded here in sensitive and insightful exploration into the heart and life of a spiritual leader and his courageous people. His Holiness himself has called for all conscious humans, (beginning with the Tibetans themselves), to pray for the souls of the Chinese involved in the bloodbath that has taken place over the last 50 years in Tibet. This film's disclosure and examination of the true story makes it even more miraculous that we are blessed with such a leader who is alive on the planet now in present time, available to us all.

Summary: Kundun is a reflection, "I am just a bug, Kundun".
Review: Kundun transports you into the life of the 14th Dalai Lama and it is mesmerizing. As his advisor says when asked about the Chinese invasion, " I am just a bug, Kundun." Like a fly on the wall, we follow the biography of a great man, but cannot quite experience the irony and religious persecution directly. Yet we feel the journey from our own comfort, and sense the complexity and importance of his lifelong pursuit of religious freedom and Tibetan independence. To paraphrase, the Dalai says when reaching India in response to the question, "Are you the re-incarnation of the Buddha?", "I am just a reflection, like the moon. If I am good, then you can see the goodness in yourself". The more I watch this film, the more layers of this subtle tapestry are revealed. I recommend this film highly for those who want a glimpse into the quest of one of the most enduring and inspired leaders of this century. If for no other reason, this DVD is worth playing for the stunning visual impact and the haunting soundtrack. FREE TIBET!

Summary: This is one of the best movies I have seen.
Review: This is Martin Scorcese's best film. It is so rare that you find a film which is so educational of a country we know so little about. The cinematography and visuals were astounding. This movie will teach you as well as entertain. It was definatley the best movie I have seen all year and was dissapointed it did not recieve more Oscar nominations.

Summary: Despite Flaws, an Elegant Portrait of the Dalai Lama
Review: While Buddhism is often little more than an Orientalist fascination with many Americans, "Kundun" is one film, despite its hint of shangri-la reverence, which successfully depicts the core values of Buddhism--nonviolence, compassion, discipline--in a truly positive way. A far better film than the ambitious but ignorant "Seven Years in Tibet," this surprise wonder from Martin Scorsese harmonizes a breathtaking tapestry of art, color, and landscape with a soaring score by composer Philip Glass. Although the Dalai Lama is not completely depicted as an everyday man, the actors portraying him exhibit an infectious and stoic charm. As a young Buddhist myself, I was touched by the film's many observations of human life, and was moved to tears by the measured depiction of Chinese cruelty against the Tibetans. Many lines are taken directly from actual Buddhist prayers and are delivered with sincere inspiration. Although the film may be difficult to follow for those unfamiliar with Buddhisms core tenets, it is nonetheless a visual and emotional experience. One need not know the symbolism of sand mandalas to savor their image draping across the screen like bright rainbows. For those who are curious to learn about the Dalai Lama, as well as the plight of the Tibetan people, "Kundun" will no doubt be a worhthile and unforgettable experience.

Review: The best movie of the decade by far, ever since it lost the oscar award I Have lost faith in the Academy. Go see it, Best cinematography and music and great plot.
