Summary: one of the best mini series ever made. period.
Review: still remember when this australian saga was in vhs. spent 3 nights with my wife without even sleeping, and was so deeply moved by it and shed tears so much that made our eyes swollen. could not imagin how we both survived those three days' daytime works. this dvd simply brings back the sweet and bitter memory of twenty years ago. you've got to watch this and get a catharsis of your life.

Review: Are you a college kid or under the age of thirty, like me? If so, let me tell you a little about how this wonderful miniseries has gotten me hooked! I was only one when it came out on ABC over Holy Week 1983. I had some free time over this Summer of 2003, and watched this miniseries in its entirety. At first, before the experience, I did not know what to think. Afterward, I was hooked and bought the whole VHS box set to add to my unique movie collection.When I came back to school, (a Catholic school mind you) and brought my tapes back, all my friends watched and now everyone of them is in line to get the DVD this Tuesday (Feb 3rd, 2004), including me. I want it for the special interviews with the cast. Like Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward, who are married for 20 years and have three kids. They met on the set and fell in love. Since both of their acting careers are not what they used to be, it will be awesome to see their viewpoints on the show almost twenty-one years after the fact. Passion, sex, drama and suspense. You'll find it all here. Watch the passion build until the third part where Meggie's and Father Ralph's relationship is consummated. Watch the tragedy and the ectasy they go through. Trust me Gen Y'ers, this will top any Dawson's Creek, 90210, or the O.C. that you've ever seen. Our parents made this the second-rated all time miniseries ever. Find out the reason why. Heck,..., how can you go wrong?

Summary: A remarkably faithful adaptation
Review: Originally aired in 1983, this mini-series caught the country's attention, earning the second-highest ratings for a mini-series in the history of television. This DVD has been long-awaited by fans of the series (though the VHS version was released some years ago) and will, I predict, do very well in sales. What makes this mini-series a success is its incredibly faithful adherence to the text of Colleen McCullough's sweeping novel of passion and courage, set against a backdrop of the grandeur of the Australian drylands and the rich opulence of the Vatican. The Cleary family's struggles are just as the reader remembers them, and nothing is missing from the tempestuous relationship between Meggie Cleary and Ralph DeBricassart. I confess, as a reader, I still prefer the engrossing pleasure of immersing myself in the words of McCullough's epic tale, but the mini-series does not disappoint fans of the story in any way. The historical details and sweeping landscapes are enthralling; the performances by Rachel Ward, Richard Chamberlain, and Barbara Stanwyck (to name a few) are flawless. This will certainly be an excellent addition to any DVD collection.

Review: The arrival of this long-awaited DVD will please many "Thorn Birds" fans. Originally broadcast in 1983, the mini-series caught the attention of viewers and was a resounding success (the second-most watched in television history), so much so that a relatively poor a "sequel", aired some twenty years later, was still able to draw in ratings. What makes the original mini-series so successful is its faithfulness to the original, sprawling novel. The characters, places, and events unfold just as they did within the pages, missing practically nothing and retaining all of the passion of the original story. As a reader, I confess I still get greater joy out of reading Colleen McCullough's sweeping passages of life in New Zealand and Australia, and within the Vatican elite. And yet, the mini-series does convey that sense of grandeur as well. The historical details, the accuracy of time and place in depicting Drogheda in all of its splendor, keep this production from appearing at all dated. Richard Chamberlain, Rachel Ward, Barbara Stanwyck, Christopher Plummer -- all give fascinating and memorable performances. Definitely an excellent addition to any DVD collection.

Review: The amazing thing about The Thorn Birds is that not a single scene is wasted - every sublime minute of this series serves a purpose and contributes to the overall arch of the story's plot. What's even more amazing is that so much material has been crammed into the film's roughly eight hours. You'll leave this miniseries utterly exhausted. Superb stuff - well worth the ridiculously low twenty dollar price tag.

Review: I remember back in the day when this book came out. We had to read it in college. It was huge and I thought OH NO... Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. I fell in love with the story, characters, landscape etc. Once the Mini Series aired, I was skeptical. I was WRONG... they made this movie EXACTLY the way it should have been and stayed true to the perfect book by Colleen McCullough. This movie will stand the test of times and has become an instant classic. No matter what age... (15 and up years old) you won't help but fall in love with the characters and this epic Love story. Anyone who is a true romantic will enjoy this movie Over and Over again. Hands down a perfect 100% - 5 star Movie (mini series) DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!

Review: This is one of those rare occasions when the movie (or mini-series) is better than the book. I read the book, and while the story was enjoyable, the movie actually added more depth and character development. The book left the reader wanting more, which the movie fufilled.

Review: I'm 22, so when this movie aired the first time of course I did not see it, but I fortunately came to find it in the WE channel and I felt in love with it. I think is one of the best things ever done, for every generation, because love doesn't have an age. Plus the acting is impeccable.

Review: I recently watched this movie for the first time, I was a bit too young to watch it's original broadcast in 1983 and too understand it at that time. This is a MUST HAVE to any movie collection. The tragedy of watching Father Ralph DeBricassart fall in love with Meggie, but knowing that he can not be the man to her that he wants to be, and that she wants him to be because of his devotion to God. Watching Meggie grow, and the pain that their "Forbidden" love causes them both. Follow the lives of Meggie and Father Ralph through their lives, their love, their losses...
A truly AMAZING story of love and loss.

Review: I first saw this movie when I was 10 or so, and LOVED it soooo much I just pre-ordered the DVD! This is the kind of romance that reaches in and grabs hold of your heart and soul, truely the most passionate, tragic, can't move away from the TV movie I have ever seen! Just wanted to let you all know, if you are a hopeless romantic you will regret passing this one by!!!
