Rating: Summary: My Prediction is Come True, sadly Review: ...The only good thing about this movie is that the screenwriters actually researched the events in the life of Pilate (Oldman, in a wonderful prformance, as always) which led to his utterly human spinelessness at the Trial of Jesus.... Above all, it relies on the Gospel According to Saint Thomas as its source. This (originally anonymous) Gospel was thrown out of the Canon at one of the first conferences on the Bible. Because it relies on this Gospel, it puts forward the Gnostic heresies which almost all the Epistles (not just Paul's either) at some point rail against. The entirity of John's letters are to denounce this! I was also offended by the performance of John the Baptist. At every point, I thought he was going to try and sell me a used car. I would have given this crap no stars, but there was no choice for that. Well, I suppose Oldman's performance as Pilate (actually the best Pilate I've seen) deserves one star to itself. If you value the Bible we have been given, I warn you to steer clear of this. ....
Rating: Summary: The best Jesus movie to date Review: This is a great adaptation of the life of Jesus Christ. And the best part about it is, Jesus is portrayed as being human! In older movies, Jesus is very somber and serious. But in this movie, you see the human side to the man that is God. In one scene, Jesus is drinking water from a well and his disiples come to join him, only to be welcomed by Jesus splashing them with the water playfully and having a water fight with them. It shows Jesus laughing and having fun in this movie, just as Im positive he did in real life. Some people may not agree with me in saying that this was how Jesus was. But think about it, yes there were times when Jesus was teaching and serious, but Im sure he had fun as well. And where in the Bible is it a sin to laugh? In another scene, Jesus is picking his 12 disiples and calls out James and John, and calls them sons of thunder as he does in the Bible, but he does it in a kidding, playful manner. This film shows is probably the closest to how Jesus was in real life. It depicts the God side of Jesus as well as the man side, as so many "Jesus" movies fail to do. This movie is a great witnessing tool and a must have DVD!
Rating: Summary: Excellent portrayal Review: I am a Christian and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Honestly I became a bigger Gary Oldman fan because his Pontius Pilot role was so well done. Honestly I think he gives the best performance. There was very little I found not to be enjoyable. You think you have seen the story enough but then you see this version and you know you haven't. Enjoy...
Rating: Summary: Best Jesus ever Review: Without a doubt this is the best film version I have ever seen of the life of Jesus. It fully humanizes him, while bringing forth the reality of of his divinity, and the struggles it caused him. I liked this film so much I bought copies for my church, friends and family. The movie isn't trying to be a complete theology, but to represent an essence, to give substance to the man-god reality of Jesus, and present the most important of his teachings. As such, it's theologically sound enough for me. In fact, it's theologically sound enough for the Pope. :) I also like the version with Robert Powell, but Jeremy Sisto is a much more approachable Jesus.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely astonishing movie. Review: I watched this movie number of times and still love it. Yes , as some readers say, it's not the best theologically based story but at the same time there is a huge need of good religious movies for average viewers. Some religious guru's put a lot of critics on it but I disagree with them. If you want more theological movie then go buy one. This movie is fun to watch, interesting, great effects This is a must have in your home collection.
Rating: Summary: Totally inspiring and moving and sweet and alive! Review: I love this movie! It is so refreshing to see Jesus portrayed as smiling and laughing and playing with kids, much more true to how I feel he would have actually been. Yes, he took on our sins, but he wasn't all about suffering, he was loving and kind and One with God - blissful and radiant and happy! I love seeing him so alive and real and human and divine. I also really appreciate how Mother Mary and Mary Magdalene are both so involved in this one, as I feel they were. I am buying this movie to help me keep connected with Jesus and so I can have inspiration in any moment. I love this movie and I think it has a great deal to teach us about the sweetness of Christ. Jai Ma!
Rating: Summary: Okay to watch once, then go back to Jesus of Nazareth Review: This miniseries is good, but when you compare it to other movies of Jesus that are out there, it falls several steps behind. I know the moviemakers were trying to portray Jesus as more human as well as divine, but I just didn't get it. I watched the movie a second time and found myself doing the same thing I did when I first saw Jesus: I pulled out my DVD of Jesus of Nazareth.
Rating: Summary: Satan Steals the show. Review: This is a fair and semi modern type of adaption of the story of Jesus. It takes quite a bit of artist license but does what it sets out to do. With one exception it is a B movie in general and a medicore adaption of the life of Jesus.... ...That exception is the temptation scenes particularly the temptation in the Garden. It was the most riviting moment of any adaption of the life of Christ I've ever seen. Jeroen Krabbe plays the best Satan I have ever seen. The final temptation is of couse taken with artistic licence but we have no idea how it was. Turning Christ's request to have the cup pass from him into a grand temptation sequence was brilliant. It hits the viewer where it counts playing on Christ's love for man that is oft not returned, and his love for the father which allows him to carry on. It is almost a reason to give the picture a fourth star. Almost.
Rating: Summary: Empowering and uplifting for any Christian Review: "Jesus" is a masterpiece. In quality it ranks up there with The 10 Commandments, Jesus of Nazareth and Ben-Hur, as well as the other movies made by this same company, Ruth, Jacob. For non Christians who only believed Jesus was "a good and just man", this movie could still be a potential treasure for them to marvel over for years to come. This film deserved all of the praise and none of the criticism it got, for this criticism was nothing more than nit-picking from dogmatics who think they know the gospel better than the rest of us. The bottom line is Jesus was a kind, merciful, longsuffering, patient human being with the sprit of God inside of Him, and no this Jesus was not a sweet natured wimp with no authority, he proved that when he "cleansed" the Holy Temple. On easter or Christmas, or anytime you need your faith to be empowered or uplifted, watch this movie. It's not a New Age seminar, it's the story of Jesus Christ.
Rating: Summary: Best of what I've seen.. Review: I've been a christians for over 20 years and seen just about every film presentation of the gospel. To me, 'Ben-Hur' is classic.. but too long for the average viewer and too much distraction for the non-christian. Several here have compared/recommended 'Jesus of Nazareth' over this 'JESUS' film. I very much disagree! This film has its flaws, but presents Jesus 'the man' more realistically than any other film. Jesus is also shown as God and Saviour. The message is there. As for discrepencies, yes the shallow water for baptism and suggestion to his need for 'repentance' from sin (suggested in the film by John/Baptist, not Jesus') were in left field. But the motives of all involved were very well presented from Judas to Herod to Pilate. This film brought my wife to tears of love and appreciation for what Jesus did on the cross for us. As for 'Jesus of Nazareth', that was a dissapointment! Scriptures in the wrong place, Judas throws himself into a fire instead of hanging himself, no sign at all of Jesus really suffering as a man in temptations of daily living, .. it was an 'ok' production "for the time" it was produced, but I highly recommend this "JESUS" film over it. Excellent for christians and non-christians alike to see the gospels in film format. It's not perfect, it's the best presentation I've seen so far, all things considered.
