Rating: Summary: Great movie Review: Shows how love, lust and religious taboo mingle. Great with a lot of guts to this contraversial movie. The critics who say this is a telenovela is wrong. This has nothing to do with a telenovela, especially a Mexican telenovela.
Rating: Summary: No big deal Review: so what was the big deal about this movie? yes the acting is fine and the story is ok, but shocking and contraversial? yes somewhat but nothing that amazing. Compared to the movie Priest which was out a few years before, this is alot tamer. Watch out for the Magdalene Sisters which is coming to theathers this year for more contraversy.
Rating: Summary: Forbidden love, sin and the power of the Mexican church Review: The 2002 Mexican film is based on a 1875 Portuguese novel even though it's set in modern Mexico. It's about the power of the church with its political intrigues and a hospital being funded by drug money. But most of all, It's about a young priest, his humanity and his sins. The director did a good job of bringing the beauty of Mexico with all its contradictions to the screen. And Gael Garcia Bernal, cast as the young priest is a good actor. The entire case is excellent, the feeling of the film completely authentic and the social issues are loud and clear. The film had the power to bring me right into the heart of the time and place as it sets forth the moral conflicts and forbidden love. It's a story that has created a lot of attention because of its shocking theme, which is definitely offensive to the church. However, in spite of the skill of the filmmakers and the depth of the concept, I found myself bored. In fact I kept dozing off and then replaying the parts I had missed. It moves at a snail's pace and there are really no surprises throughout even though I applaud it for giving me a glimpse a very real church-dominated Mexico
Rating: Summary: Best movie I have seen so far Review: The Crime of Father Amaro has to be the best film I have seen so far this year . The story line is very good also the acting is great. Again Gael Garcia has proven what a great actor he is. The movie roles he has done have been great . The movie has scenes that can make you giggle and some that want to make you cry .
Rating: Summary: The controversy of Padre Amaro's Movie. Review: The crime of Padre Amaro is a movie based on novel wrote last century, that relates the controversial behavior of a young priest recently ordenaded, who was sent to a small town in rural Mexico. In his arrival to the town he met a pretty young woman with very strong religios believes and faith. Padre Amaro came to this comunity to help the old priest who was runinig the church for a long time but Padre Amaro found out that too many things were wrong, he starts trying to fix everything but he relaized that was almost impossible to change the sistem. He found conexion religion-narcs, and even he discovered the affair in between the old priest and a mature woman who had a restaurante in town. After a while Padre Amaro began runing the church in the same way and under the protection of the cardenal, soon he knew that he was in the middle of a mafia. Besides he fell in love with the religios woman and both of them gave up into a pationary relation-ship. Finally she died by accident while trying to have an abortion and nobody knew what really happened because Padre Amaro never told the truth. This is a good movie in my opinion, because it keeps you interested since the begining to the end. It is amazing how the directors could create this movie based on a novel and spacially at this time when the world is suffering a religios crisis, in particular the christianism. At this time in USA we know about a lot of cases that relate with Padre Amaro. So the movie was on big screen for several weeks becoming a hit while controversy is still a topic to talk about.
Rating: Summary: Excelente! Review: The movie was a great a new gooooooool for Mexican cinema which continues to pump out thought provoking, well filmed movies while the "Behemoth of the North" continues to pump out its brain dulling fluff-o-dramas. You can read more from other commentaries, I would just add that I found the most intersting portrayel to be the "crazy" woman who practices her own brand of religion - she is the first to stone the young whistleblower, yet the first to know about the local parish corruption, she is the first to lead in prayer yet the first to steal money from the offering bowl....interesting symbolism of rural Mexican catholics.

Rating: Summary: An excellent must see film Review: This film is controversial indeed. It brings to the screen a subject most religious people would not even contemplate. The actors are excellent in their craft and portray their charcters with honesty that shows in their performance. If there was one movie that everyone should see it's El Crimen Del Padre Amaro.
Rating: Summary: An astonishing film Review: This is a really understated film that follows the moral collapse of a handsome young priest Padre Amaro. The young man arrives in a village in some backwater of Mexico to find low level corruption. He is also attracted to a young woman of the village who is strongly attracted to him. They begin a doomed affair. The beauty of the film is the way your perceptions of characters change as it goes on. The corruption of society seems pale to individual corruption. Those that appear to be corrupt appear less so at the end of the film. Those that appear good are less so. Even with its understated appeal, you find yourself in a vice of an ending that will just leave you breathless. An astonishing and angry film.
