Summary: Best movie, best soundtrack-- perfect!
Review: Where to begin... this is absolutely the best movie there is. I wish I had had a chance to see this on the big screen. From the very beginning- with a man tied to a wooden cross going over a waterfall- the cinematography is absolutely stunning, and is so throughout. There is betrayal and redemption, but redemption found in a most unexpected way. Robert De Niro is in his best role ever, I think, as a man who was evil and turns to the path of goodness under Iron's direction. Jeremy Irons is the unwavering Jesuit priest, who maintains his faith through all evil. The music is uplifting and powerful, and often it is the soulful-eyed natives who sing it- creating a strong image to be heard and felt. For while De Niro has a personal, moral and religious struggle, and political struggle ensues over the right to all the visual treasures of waterfalls and rainforests shown in the film, it is the natives of South America who endure the most heroically of all.

Review: Bet I am one of the many film buffs who are awaiting the release of this fantastic film on DVD.
The Mission is the Winner of the Palme D'Or and the Grand Prix De La Commission Superieure Technique at the Cannes Film Festival of 1986 (the year of its release). Its high time this movie is brought out on DVD.
Guess this was one of the most gruelling roles Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons have ever played - climbing those cliffs and through the muck of the rain forests.
Also a suggestion - IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO ALSO INCLUDE THE MUSIC TRACKS OF THIS FILM IN THE SPECIAL FEATURES SECTION OF THE DVD. Music Director Ennio Morricone would agree with me on this.
Also since movie is based on a true story of the Guarani tribe, it would be enlightening if the special features could throw some light on the Gaurani tribe or the advent of the white man and Christianity in the rain forests of latin america.

Summary: A TALE OF HATE AND REDEMPTION
Review: This is a BEAUTIFUL movie. With a magnificent music score by Morricone (the Good, the Bad, the Ugly et al.), wonderful photography, we travel through the jungle and walk with the guaranies in a particular moment of their history. The moment of their contact with the white man and their "redemption" by catholic missionaries, during the brutal colonization by spaniards and portuguese.
On the other hand, the central line is a poignant exploration of the intimate journey of a man (De Niro) from ruthless adventurer and murderer, to humble and enlightened follower of the jesuits. His process of expiation and penance is absolutely moving, as it is set in very rugged and beautiful surroundings.
What a pity that we can't get it on DVD..........

Review: From the opening scene to the breath-holding finale, this film is best compared to a awe inspiring work of art. The story is simple: man struggles with man, man struggles with himelf, man struggles with "God". The morality of the movie is somewhat lost in the visually appealing location that the movie was filmed in. Several times I had to remind myself to take a breath. The movie, along with the soundtrack, are easily one of the best pieces of art Hollywood has every released. For those wanting romance, adventure, drama, or an assault on the senses; The Mission will deliver.

Summary: A Truly Breathtaking Movie
Review: The Mission stars Jeremy Irons and Robert DeNiro, but also includes brief performances from Liam Neeson and Aidan Quinn. The movie is set in the jungles of South America during the late 1700s. Jeremy Irons is a Jesuit priest trying to convert and protect the indigenous people. DeNiro is excellent in his portrayal of a hot-blooded slave-trader who has a change of heart. Together, they will struggle to save the people from takeover by the commercial exploits of the Spanish and Portuguese. The story moves very well, and the scenery is gorgeous. I believe this film won an Oscar for its cinematography. The musical score is hauntingly beautiful. The message is still powerful today. I would recommend seeing this.
