Rating: Summary: Mission:Accomplished Review: Deniro's finest performance. A man struggling with the guilt of killing his own brother, and his loyalty to his country, throws himself into religion to save his soul. A gut-wrenching and deeply moving performance that rivals even "The Deer Hunter" and "Raging Bull." No other actor in the history of cinema transforms himself so completely into the roles he plays. This film also stars Jeremy Irons in one of his own great roles. An eye-opener on how badly the Native Americans were treated by the greedy Spanish and their minions.A must have for film fans.Widescreen in all its glory.
Rating: Summary: 3.8 out of 5 Review: Nominated for seven Academy Awards and taking in one for "Best Cinematography", THE MISSION is director Roland Joffe's interesting drama. Based on fact and scripted by Robert Bolt, the film is set in 18th century Spain, where a ruthless slave-trader (Robert De Niro) becomes a Jesuit as the Europeans attempt to remove the Portuguese from the land. De Niro is excellent, but without the action of his normal performances, he's almost boring; Jeremy Irons as his "mentor" is terrific as well; there's also a good if not small performance by a young Liam Neeson, among others. Ennio Morricone has a smooth, moving score that works well with the film's misty, sometimes relaxing production design. It may not have deserved the "Best Picture" award it was nominated for, but THE MISSION is a calm drama to watch in your spare time.

Rating: Summary: Instruction in theology, and history. Review: While I wish this movie was written about Protestant missionaries, I cannot deny how awe inspiring "The Mission" is. Robert DeNiro, up to usual form, plays a convincing mercenary (slaver), and later, a convert to Catholicism. By watching this movie, not only will one learn the basics of Catholic theology, but one will also understand the culture of Spanish/Portuguese MERCENARY ACTIVITIES in colonial South America. It is an IMPORTANT part of WORLD HISTORY, which oddly enough, is rarely examined. Even for the areligious, this movie will not be a waste of time.
Rating: Summary: Don't overlooked this underrated classic Review: I like that this movie doesn't really seem to have an agenda to push. There are many complex themes that are dealt with, but at no point does the film try to say that one way is necessarily the right way. Yes, it makes it's point very well that killing and/or enslaving people is wrong. But beyond that, what surprised me is that it takes such a non-judgemental viewpoint of the work of missionaries. I really appreciated that. In other words, since I'm probably not organizing my thoughts very well, this movie deals with heavy issues but ultimately lets the viewer come to his/her own conclusions. The performances from Jeremy Irons and DeNiro are first class. If Irons shines brightest, I'd say it's because he has much more screentime and the script gave him a bit more to work with. But I won't take anything away from DeNiro, this is a really different type of role for him and he is very affective. I could go on, but I think this is a movie that really just needs to be experienced. And don't be put off by the time period. I'm not wild about period pieces, generally speaking, but I was engrossed in this movie right from the first scene to the last. There are some truly unforgettable moments. While I haven't listened to the director's commentary or viewed the documentary (yet), I will say that this is one awesome looking dvd. Before checking out the dvd, I had seen the movie years ago on a pan-and-scan VHS rental. I had heard so much praise for the cinematography and you'd never tell why from a tape. Now I see why the first thing people often praise is the photography, it's outstanding.
Rating: Summary: Life on the Missions Review: "The Mission" is a film that takes us beautiful rain forests of Brazil where the tribe of Guaraní Indians live. The film is base on a true story that happened during times of slavery and colonies in the New World. We visit the constructed missions where the Indians live and work. The importance of the missions is that they are protections for the Indians against the slavery and abuses from the Spaniards. Captain Rodrigo (Robert De Niro) was a man who bought and sold slaves, but killed his brother and looks for penance. He goes away through forest and waterfalls until arriving at the mission of San Miguel. The father (Jeremy Irons) of the mission shows compassion to the captain who later becomes a monk. They are both accepted by the Indians and learn to live with their customs. The problem in the film is that the territory where the missions are is under negotiations between the Spaniards, Portuguese and the Catholic Church. The film shows how the Indians were converted to the catholic religion. In the missions, the priests accept them and they learn to play the violin and sing. The film shows the brutality of the Portuguese in not respecting the missions. There is discussion of whether the Indians are animals and it is not possible that they can sing and adore God. What was interesting for me was how the Indians changed their family life because of slavery. They began to kill their third child so that they could escape from the slave hunters. I recommend the film for the beauty of the forest, indigenous and religious music.
Rating: Summary: Shoulda won the Oscar!!!! Review: I have consistently heard critics harping about the lack of a human element in this movie, the chatacters being hollow, less than absorbing..... Well, to this "critic's" eye the Critics don't get it. This film was an amazing accomplishment. It made you witness first hand the demise of a group of "primitives" at the hand of a holy sanctioned conqurer....ring any bells? The beauty of The Mission is that it dispensed with much of the trite explanation of character in such PC black and white easily digested exposition. This film brought you into a realm in a completely different manner. You were not the evil Spaniard or the helpless Native. You observed the struggle, almost voyeruisticly. The conclusions are drawn by seeing what transpires. Not by some easily digested, expositioned viewpoint. That is what makes this movie affect you with such power. It is different, and for a good reason. You may crawl and yearn for A Color Purple, To Kill a Mocking Bird, and numerous other armchair activist classics. But instead you are handed the task in drawing your own conclusions in witnessing the transformation of the Natives culture. In other words.....it sticks with you! So for the Critics that lambast this film, go for it! Ivory towers guarantee you sublime distance from art that asks you to do the work. Yes this film is art!
